Also, why are they paying $740 bucks for this? I could get the same thing for less than $500 per setup, thereby saving over $200,000 in the process. They're more than welcome to forward that extra $200k my way and I'll hook 'em up.

From the picture in the article it appears that they're using the red octane metal pad which usually costs about ~$200 each. Makes sense, when we're talking about middle and high schoolers it's best to get something that can hold up to a bit of a beating.

First off you admit your ignorance, thanks. But your expectation that everything be spelled out to you is what sets me off. It's not just you; I've noticed this trend with the last few years with movies. It's one of the downfalls of the latter matrix movies, and other fantasy/sci-fi genre movies. One of the mysteries of the matrix was that you were thrown in the middle of the world and taken on a ride. The same is true for this particular narnia story. It requires imagination on your part...

Also, for what it's worth the movie followed the book very well. These are children's books that happen to appeal to adults also...granted that you have an imagination.

I've often thought about this and at one time almost started coding a java server/client system to do just that since I couldn't find any other (graceful) solution.

Saw the bundled software and was tempted to try it out to see how well it worked...but then just figured it was cheap "bundle" softare and dismissed it. Leadtek is in the business to sell hardware. They included the crappy software the entice you and you're discovering that it sucks. That's no shocker since I remember paying $40 bucks for the thing. Can't have it all.

Although, a word of warning when using these cards with linux. The default BTTV driver setting is for PAL, and you have to either pass the option to set it to NTSC when loading the module or re-comple the driver with the correct setting (easy one line code change).

I don't know where you're getting the impression that slashdot is biased against Halo 2 (since they've been covering it fairly well over the past year). Perhaps everyone isn't all overjoyed with halo 2 because we're sick of hearing about it. How can you say that a game will be game of the year when you haven't even played it? I think this year is going to be a very tough one to decide on which game will come out on top. Other contenders include half-life 2, Doom III, metroid prime 2, resident evil 4, GTA San Andres, MGS 3, and probably a few more that I can't think of off the top of my head. What a great year to be a gamer!

Personally I think the first halo was a very over rated game. Granted it has a great multiplayer expereince....but so what! There are *many* games that give you a good (even better!) multiplayer experience.

I was one of the many holdouts waiting for the PC version. When I finally had it in my grubby hands I was sorely dissappointed. From shoddy framerates, bad mulitplayer experience, to frequent firstplayer crashes. The last straw was when I came to a point early in the game where I *could not* for the life of me proceed in the level without the game crashing at the same moment every time. This even happened when I tried to play the game on my laptop which has a entirely different CPU and GPU as my desktop.

Eventually got an Xbox (not for the purpose of playing halo I might add) and have all but forgotten about this whole halo PC thing. Nice to see that they actually are admitting that halo PC has its problems, but now that they're reporting that we'll have to wait even longer to play the bloody game properly, all I can say is no thanks...

But then on the other hand what do they care...they already got their money out of me.

I didn't say it gave you no assurance. I just said it wasn't enough when competing with the likes of Microsoft and Sun. Hmm, let's do the math, EAL-4 is greater than EAL-2, and EAL-2 is just not that great, even if some companies do screw up in trying to get it. Trusted Solaris has a great reputation as far as secure operating systems go, is EAL-4, and a lot of security software is based on it. Who is going to win that battle? It ain't gonna be Red Hat or SuSE. It may let them get their foot in the door a little bit, but not enough to play with the big boys. And even worse for them, the NSA has their own Secure Linux distribution. I'd rather try to bring in something that has a snowball's chance in hell of being accredited than an EAL-2 product... getting a CCC is just the first step towards getting a product purchased. You still have to accredit the product and that can take years. Which will have a better shot, something that's EAL-2, or something the NSA put out? It doesn't take a genius to figure out that one.

Speaking as someone who works for the government and knows exactly what a Common Criteria Certification is worth, why the hell do the Red Hat people think they're going to be major players by getting certified to EAL-2? I mean, seriously, *anyone* can get EAL-1, so they put just a tiny bit more effort (and dough) into it to get EAL-2, when competing operating systems like Windows and Solaris are EAL-4. No one is going to take them seriously with just an EAL-2. And that explains why it'll be done by the end of the year. And by the way, the CCC is a bunch of BS that tells you absolutely nothing about how secure a system is. For the government, it just dictates what you can and can't buy.

Every time I see another ad or preview for a starwars game my eyes just glaze over and I flip to the next page. I mean really, how many star wars games does the world need? I know it may be an unfair comparison, but these star wars games are starting to appear like the army men series. I've played enough of the junk coming out of lucasarts over the years to just avoid them.
