    unless it's packaged up mac OSX style. all pretty & sleek, smiles when you boot up, & a command line for kernel hacking if you want it. hey if it was open source & would run on inexpensive (non-proprietary) hardware, i'd ditch my linux & windows dualboot in a heartbeat.

    we're sort of past the point of showing the world how neat & feature packed linux is, the hype is over, if you want to keep money rolling in for development, you have to start making pretty releases rather then beta 0.9.9.9.2 ...
    programs will never be 100% stable, hell microsoft & most other software 'vendors' make their releases closer to the alpha level.
    there is a need to buy new users or time will leave linux in the same sad shape as all the other promising operating systems, amiga, BE, etc...
    the only real problem w/ ximian is that it's all about gnome, w/ the previews from kde 3.1, i just may switch sides.

    a friends company in NZ approached nokia nearly 7 years ago w/ the blueprints for adding a camera to the existing nokia line complete w/ empeg encoding & display for under $30NZ (that's roughly $15US), keep in mind the drop in prices since '95-'96, of course they were turned down, being ahead of their time & not americans.

    i haven't felt comfortable w/ the flash interface since version 3 or 4. dreamweaver morphs quite a bit as well, and i won't get into all the other programs. new features to make work quicker & a whole new interface that knocks your productivity down for a few weeks.

    my dad has developed & built a number of successful inventions/innovations that have gone on to spawn businesses & corporations. the lone person model can work quite well.

    ya, lets not have any gamers trying to run a blizzard game at a lan party. it's not enough to pay $50-70 for the game, if you want to play with your friends, you have to go through their servers. now we should also keep in mind that even once the game is obsolete, there still won't be any way to run your own bnet, because blizzard is a corporation, which can live forever, and thus copyright their game technology/source/ideas indefinately +75 years.
    come'n what sort of company files a lawsuit against its fans ? next we'll see bands going after their fans for swapping rare tracks over the internet.

    source is the only data that really matters. if you're just looking for a free copy of quake, sure they don't give away the complete game, but they do give you everything you need to make your own. collect some textures, throw together your own maps, skin a couple characters, it's no more work than the average enthusiast does when the game's brand new. www.quakeworld.com

    i'm just complaining 'bout RIAA, because it'd be nice if you could legally download old NiN or other tracks after the cd's have left the marketplace. what sort of fan wants to spend $30 to replace that old scratched up cd because now it needs to be special ordered in.
    ID has a good idea and it'd be nice to see other industries/companies following their lead.

    it's good to see ID keeping with their tradition of slowly opening up their source code. how many other gaming companies out there do this ? many still freak out when you try to play w/ their 20 year old roms. quake 1 is still a great game, fast, and can be run on nearly any machine still operating, of course i don't think they're giving away the NiN tracks, the RIAA would have a fit !
    ID is definately one of the best software companies and definatey at the top of game companies. They're a business, they make money, & they give back to the community.
    so they keep the code for 3+ years, at least they won't go broke and stop having code to give us.
    it'd be nice to see other companies doing this !
    way to go ID Software, thanks for continued good deeds.

    mind you i haven't been to comdex in a couple years, the last time i went(2000), it had dwindled down to 1/4 it's size from a few years prior, i don't know anyone in the industry that even bothers to go now. anyone in the know has already read all the latest info online, and the one chance to get the public excited about new products is completely wasted. it should be noted that in 1999 or 2000, the local geeks from sfu with their vanlug (vancouver linux users group or something) had the one of the most popular booths. who in the industry wants to watch some M$ lackey show off the new features in internet explorer ?

    what a joke these mods are, the point of the post was that these video game turned movie reviews are getting redundant. ooh hot girl, decent game, movie leaves something to be desired, no wait, the game left something to be desired, they just carried the pathetic plot over, oh well, don't worry, plenty of nerdy guys who aren't getting any with spare time & money on their hands to go see the movie, who cares if they're educated, they're not getting any...
    come'n save the bandwidth for real articles and pull your self righteous head out of your ass. as if modding me down is going to help your odds at getting a babe like Jovovich =P

    the wizard, remember when conventions were cool. I'd love to see nintendo or sony bring back the travelling video game competitions/trade shows open to the general public with a nice circus atmosphere...
    hell, it'd be nice to see comdex lose the age restrictions and promote itself as a technology fair. lets face it, computers and video games have been bigger flops then any movies based on them. anyone seen a VR headset or gloves in a retail store since VR Boy or the nintendo powerglove ? post 2000 and the greatest leaps in portable technology are in adding walkman capabilities and "colour" to our portable address books (palm, windows ce, etc)...

    writing confusing software/systems just leads to neurotic managers and paranoid overseerers. it's only short term security until they ask one of their other 'experts' why it's setup like it is. the confusing code scheme smells strongly of all those 'business models' used by former dot-com'ers

    who needs to make it confusing when you leave yourself backdoors into everything ?

    this is why i'm working on developing more transferable skills, moving from computers to adventure tourism. at my last job i managed to use my big cranium to automate much of my job & soar the companies income, unfortuneatly, i also made the systems streamlined and simple so that they could replace me with a clueless dork for a fraction of my pay. they also found if far cheaper to disregard my contract, apparently profit sharing only counts when there's no profit to share. if you're cutting edge, you'll always make good money, anywhere below that, be prepared to become redundant, if you can't accept that, get out now.

    it's funny how a armed revolt against the schoolground terrorists is wrong, yet for the gov't to do it is right.
    i wonder if the lessons from the first world war will ever be learned. human nature is to retaliate against bullying, then the big gov't steps in and supports further actions against the school oddballs (searches, suspensions, expulsions, etc). how long until a real geek revolt happens.

    there really isn't an east vs. west issue, there would have to be some level of equality for that to happen. instead, the east is the top, the west is the submissive (and more attractive) bottom.

    it is important for 2 reasons.
    1, it gives napster ground to sue for damages, much like Be. This is a nearly identical misuse of a monopoly like in the micrsoft antitrust case.
    RIAA has been far more heinous then microsoft 'tho, they have been raping both consumers and the artists they claim to represent.

    2, this could actually move to give the rights to music back to the artists, opening market doors and oppurtunities to all the little guys.
    maybe we'll find some real services opening up that offer real music instead of the backstreet boy wannabes we have shoved down our throats on every public channel. maybe this will unhinge RIAA and halt their attempts to squash streaming audio sites (shoutcast radio stations), etc.

    but then what's the chance that could happen in the land of the dollar.

    no this is an example of microsoft doing the exact same thing again as they did w/ msn.com

    the problem is not with the email, but rather outlook express failing to comply with standards. once again microsoft has set their own rules of the internet. yes it's an exploit, but maybe if enough of these incidents happen, microsoft might actually be pressured into providing a 'less' buggy version of OE, maybe even one that lets you turn off all the extra virus provoking 'features'.
