First, you have a fundamentally flawed understanding of taxation. A tax cut isn't a payment to the people. It's simply not taking something that belongs to them already. Tax cuts almost always stimulate. People given money will generally spend it. If you feel so fscking guilty, pay back some of your refund! Your so cavalier about spending my money, spend some of yours! Taxation is a huge burden in this country. If the politicians aren't going to tighten their belts, then at least give us some of our money back and let the economy grow.
The fact that they called MS to say "Hey, it doesn't reflect our views" shows that either a) @Stake's lawyers warned them that they might be sued, b) they were afraid of losing MS's business (which makes one wonder how little business they have elsewhere), or c) both.
JAV
Yeah, penalize the end user and let the author of faulty code go unscathed? People already do pretty-well keeping AV software up to date. Most of the problems we see are from newer viruses and I mean large scale. The two most recent are a result of vulnerabilities. But hey, let's go after the end user. It's been working in the drug war for years and it's already being adopted by the RIAA so it's gotta work!
JAV
First, Clear Channel is hardly a monopoly. Of the 17k+ radio stations they own less than 10% (something like 1400). So all this hubbub about Clear Channel just shows how biased one's position is (and perhaps shows how the true marching orders seem to come from libs?). Second, there is one "seemingly" conservation news channel, FOX. Conservatives are so friggin' out-gunned by in TV by the liberals and yet let one network appear conservative and the whole world is coming to an end. Have you noticed that it's now the #1 news channel? Hmmm this means MOST Americans like it.
JAV
Dvorak made a similar point a year or so ago. Like airplay, downloads make good advertisement. How much this cooresponds to a drop in sales has really never been studied, rather the RIAA has just assumed it hurts sales.
JAV
I agree. You can debate whether someone in public housing should have such amenities, but we are focusing on a single principle here. We want to send a message to the RIAA. I would be more than willing to make a donation. Furthermore, at $2k a pop, there are enough like-minded people I'm sure to cover many more such settlements.
JAV
I'll respond to everything here. First of all, how do you know I'm a "right-winger?" Just because I loath political correctness and thing we should target our searches to those who fit the profile? I've said nothing on any other issue, but you suddenly lump me into a class. Whether I am or not is not important. So it would seem that you are guilty of that which you accuse me, stereotyping or profiling. But alas, I'll take it. Profiling is not discrimination. And for the record, I am VERY often searched myself. And like a poster has already said, I take no offense to it at all. I also have no problem with everyone being searched per se'. My point is, if the government wanted to start concentrating on those it felt were a higher risk, and btw ARE a higher risk, then I have no problem with that. I don't think it has any less effect than the police stopping those who fit the description of a perpetrator on the street. And another thing, to Dissonant who called me an asshole, why is it that debate has to be reduced to such levels? I would infer that either you are not very intelligent or are very immature. And to elude to the fact that I am probably what you consider a "right-winger" why is it that liberals usually resort to such base extents?
To djeca, I commend your honest debate. Even though we dissagree, you at least strive to make your points clearly and thoughtfully. If we can't discuss openly in such a forum as this, then how can we help change minds and hearts?
JAV
I didn't realize it was labelled "flamebait" till just now. Well, I adore Slashdot. I read it daily. But there are a lot of folks here that smoke the cigs because it's cool. Meaning, they're liberal because it's cool and they accept popular ideas simply because they are afraid of being labelled "non-intellectual" if they don't. I don't think that's the majority, mind you, but there is a large segment, much like in society. It's doesn't make them correct, rather merely comfortable (and with that appear to be correct). Truth is absolute and the fact that it's absolute is precisely why people go to such great lengths to illustrate that it isn't. Remember your debate skills. It's not usually the one that the audience is behind that's right because it's easier to play on emotions than it is to accept where logic (and with it, "truth")is taking you.
JAV
Since when is common sense an invasion of privacy? Frankly, we should do a lot more of it. If you're a mid-eastern national here visiting or even a patriated citizen from the East, you must understand that you SHOULD be profiled. The fact that we are searching elderly women (causasion, black, etc.) is a mockery to logic. We know what the predominance of the terrorists look like and what they will likely look like should another attack occur. Therefore, only an idiot (Democrat? Liberal?) would hold PC over security...and they do...daily.

Maybe we finally have a poster child for all anti-RIAA ideals. This is really rediculous. I understand having to quell piracy and such, but the delivery of music is changing. This is more a story of "we have no idea how to function in this medium so until we do, you have to use the old medium" than anything else. Well, people just aren't going to wait for the RIAA to "figure out" how they want to do things. Right or wrong, the cat is out of the bag and doesn't want to go back in. At this point, you have to figure out a way to construct a habitat for it. The RIAA is archaic and they basically are pissed that they are being marginalized. Luckily, their broad-stroke battle-axe has come down to bear on this 12 yr. old girl and with any luck, the public will belt a collective "Okay, enough!"
So soon the same people who ring up your burger by pressing the picture of a Big Mac will be teaching your kids. "Well, Sally, the machine says you got a D. I pressed the right button, see? The picture of the 'Book Report.'"
I know PalmOS is simple. That's not what I was getting at. It's very odd, depending on the app, to retrieve pictures for example. Also some standard formats are hard to find support for. Documents to Go will not just pull a.doc file, you have to insert it into the app with a client. These are inconveniences with PalmOS.

What PalmOS lacks is intuitiveness. Playing video on it is awkward and retrieving files more OS-like is not possible. I want something more like an OS but Linux PDA's are expensive, which is just so damn odd to me.

Maybe the ad should have went like this:
GNU/Linux is older and joins the Army. The Sarge is doing mail call.
"Bueller!" "Here!"...."LINUX!?"..."Uh, that's GNU Linux...my first name is GN..." "Just take your mail, Linux!"

I don't know how much of Phoenix's and AMI's business the "geek" group represents, but I would think white-box builders in general are a substantial group. As word of DRM has been spreading, most folks who build their own do not seem to like it. So for companies like ABIT, ASUS, SOYO, etc. it is definitely in their best interest to offer non-DRM boards. The simple fact is, this should be offered as a software model or even an add on chip if someone really wants this for their corp. desktops. Making this manditory, I hope, will produce a backlash. This seems part and parcel with the whole movement to restric "fair use." This aspect of consumer law is being so marginalized right now and the general public isn't getting outraged nearly enough.
JAV
I wonder if that cut is coming from their profit or the artist. Frankly, they should be under $10 in my opinion. This is only cutting piracy from without. What about artist? I hope they don't take the hit.
And we think Gore would be better? I agree that these ideas are far-reaching. With any luck, they will be weighed in and a compromise be reached. That's politics, though. There is no conspiracy here. It's not designed to yank Bo and Luke Duke out of their trailer and strip search them. Granted, left unbridled it could lead to that. That's what debates like this are for though and that's good. Given the choices, though, Bush has done far more than Gore would have done. We'd still be waiting on the UN to get it's finger out of it's ass (or more likely, out of the honey pot that was the sanctions against Iraq) and do something. We should not relinquish control to the UN period.
Unfortunately...but I don't listen to them anymore for 2 reasons:
a) The anti-piracy rant they went on
b) They suck. If I wanna hear formerly-rockin' bands sing slow songs I can just listen to Aerosmith.
Let's face it, some bands should never have quit herion.

"My own philosophy," Dr. Douglas said in an interview, "is that we should do our best to listen to what string theory is trying to tell us. It is smarter than we are."
But that statement, well it's just funny!
That's why I like voting days to fall on rainy days. That way the lazy, bribed with cigs crowd will just sleep late and stay home. It's hard to convince people who don't get out of bed for a job to get out of bed to vote and considering that they are only going to vote for those who are giving them handouts, it works out better on rainy days.
