Convenient? MP3's? I do agree CD's and DVD's are poorly designed though. Nothing is more inconvenient than the CD. For useability, it's yet to match the floppy. As for MP3's, I've been in IT for around 10-11 years and I've yet to rip a CD to MP3. I don't subscribe to anything that thinks 20 steps to completion is convenient. The reason this guy is off the mark is because people want to touch what they buy, generally. JAV

You can bet if some 5,000 seat company said "Hey, SCO, go pound sand up your ass on this license crap!" they would likely start "re-thinking" their lawsuit strategy in regards to Linux users and companies. And keep in mind, they may eventually just put this under the umbrella of the BSA. I would think, though, they would have to win in court to do this, but I'm not sure. RMS is a zealot, extremist, whathaveyou but the biggest problem is that you can't take him too seriously. I think he serves the greater good in that his ideals provide a framework of thought for what we all might like to see and thus can incorporate bits and pieces into practical application. The problem comes when you try to live completely by those ideals. Much like many environmentalists, eventually you find yourself alienated in your idealism or worse, you encounter a catch 22 of sorts in your idealism. In the west, for instance, environmentalists are in a quandry over forests because on the one hand, they want them protected and on the other, if left unmanaged under growth abounds and you are left with an imbalance in fuel that, when set fire, threatens that which they protect. In a very real sense this can parallel the GNU community in that ideas that may involve anti-RMS philosophy may be needed to move the GNU system forward. JAV

Full of missing links? Perhaps you should take your discoveries to a major university and take some credit for them. Further, it's with typical arrogance that those who talk about these links hale the "rich diversity" of the past with so little in the fossil record to really prove that such links existed. But then again, we can always throw in a few more "millenia," a dash of radiation sources, and voila mutations that "had to have existed" and links that "must have been." It's a belief that the evidence points to a given conclusion. Evolutionists, clergy, you, me, scientists, physicists, we all live with a system of faith or even systems of faith. I can see where downloading new titles could account for some not buying cd's. But how much of that goes on? I must admit I download very little music. If I did, it'd likely be older titles. Frankly, older songs should be made available at a discount in my opinion, but the music stores and RIAA doesn't do this. While I don't condone piracy or stealing or the like, it is interesting to sit back and watch the music industry get screwed the way they've hurt so many bands. I think the reality is that downloading is going to occur. What the RIAA is doing is trying to plug each hole as it occurs not realizing that there are just too many and that it's time for a new ship. People are tired of the current pricing structure. Now, what is RIAA going to do about it? If they keep this strategy of going after the millions of downloaders, they're just going to hurt their business in the long run. >
