Could someone please tell this to my girl friend. She hates that I go into my "cave" and play FFXI or surf the web for hours upon hours instead of watching MTV's Real World Road Rules Super Duper Kerplunk Special.
Cost issues aside - discontinuing support for old products (in this case 6 year old products ) is kind of a good thing. It forces everyone to move to new hardware and/or and more reliable software versions (2K, XP, etc.)
At my work we have machines ranging from p2's with 95, to p4's with XP and everything inbetween. it's not only an IT nightmare, but it creates serious issues with printing documents, sharing files, and general workflow. This year our IT dept. has put thier foot down and we are getting all new machines with XP and the newest versions of the software we use (I work for a real estate company who primarily uses various MS, Adobe, Quark, and Autodesk products). Since some of the systems already have XP we have our Win2k server already set up to handle them.
Of course my departments getting all new Dual G5's which is gonna rock, but doesn't really mean anything to anyone outside of our little apple circle.
If the average out of court settlement is $1,000 (yes some people have paid a couple hundred and others several thousand, i'm just low-balling my estimate) and you have 341 settlements and several more on the way your pulling in a good chunk of $341,000 oh and since we already know they are not following the correct procedures on how they obtain their subpoenas i'm sure there legal fees are pretty cheap.
Easy Money for the RIAA - don't make music, just file lawsuits:)
At my work we layed off several people and thos eof us that stayed were given 2% raises (for me it worked out to about $800 more a year) I'd honestly rather have more coworkers than $800/yr more that I don't even notice.
That happens sometimes... but as for the Smoking rules... the idea is that you supposed to be 18 to legally smoke, and if your smoking on school grounds or within site of the school it makes the school look bad by seeing a bunch of 16yr olds smoking their... As a smoker myself it's hard enough to tell people to piss off because I don't care about my health - it's another issue to tell people to piss off when they say i'm encouraging their kids to smoke.
This is especiialy important when at a public place and i'm smoking. A couple with young child may be sitting near me - if they are I put out the cig, why? because it's proper ettiquette.
How about the kids could grow some balls and learn to stand up for themselves. If someone makes a website making fun of them - you make a website making fun of them back or even better make fun of how shitty their site looks. If they annoy you on IM - BLOCK THEM. Add their email addy to a few porn sites or post it on your website and get them sent tons of spam.
It's amazing how few parents teach their kids to defend themselves, but if someone hits you - YOU HIT BACK. If you don't you're just going to be fucked over for the rest of your life, or become a cop...
With all the problems he had (literally TONS) and the fact that NO windows user would have put up with half of the issues (read: trouble installing apps and non-existant dependencies) and just gone "Yeah look why Linux sucks" I would have given it a 3/10 on use and a 4/10 on credibility.
I'm sure Fedora will be flamed for quite some time now and I hope they learn their lesson and QA - QA - QA form now on and - Don't release a half-assed product - release the software when it's "done" not when "it's ok"
First off MS has been making Frontpage which "trys" to compete with Dreamweaver and has failed misserably. (Yeah I know some people prefer it, but they also are the same people who prefer html code geared towards IE on a PC and fail to check with any other platform/browser to see if it's even readable)
Second Flash has a competitor called Swish (forgot who makes it) and from people i've talked to it works pretty well - Flahs integrates with the other Macromedia software better (obviously) but if you just need to do some cool animation and don't want to shell out a bunch of cash for Flash then it's the way to go.
Third Director is ok, but not somethgn i'd use on a daily basis.
Finally since MS makes a shity competitor to Dreamweaver and the fact that another company already competes in the Flash dept. i'm willing to bet MS's new software will be "interesting" but not be a product that will compete with Macromedia on a professional level.
It's like comparing MS Publisher to Quark/InDesign...mmmK
I think CNN's interpretation of "Deleted" is actually just wishful thing. Although I bet a lot of kids have been yelled at by Mom and Dad and probably grounded from "web use" for having kazaa installed.
On a side note (sorta related) I saw the Matrix Revo- last night and before the movie was this ad about software piracy and why it's wrong because lot's of people work hard to make good movies. This was laughed at, booed, and general flaming comments shouted by the audiance at the ad.
Actually I do like the idea of ad blocking, but in actual use I find myself turning it "OFF" when I know i'm going to be visiting sites I normally do and "ON" when I am looking for something on sites i've never been too.
The Reason?
I visit a lot of game/mod sites and i've noticed that a lot fo them (including my own) will not show the affiliate links with the Norton Ad blocker turned on. this is bothersome because some mod sites (not all) which I like have long url's off of XYZ hosting company and since I am too lazy to type in the name I rely on going to say XYZvault.ign.com and clicking XYZ affiliate's button link.
Redhat was one of the biggest Linux companies actually allowing the average consumer to switch from Windows to Redhat with their easy windowish install of linux and an install that actually would find and setup all my hardware for thos eof us not inclined to use a command line. Red Hat had an even better desktop chance now that the big Macromedia apps were running on linux. The time is now, and yet they are shrinking back into a corner where they should be coming out strong....
Netscape has a long and sad story, a company that once made the worlds number 1 browser and supported a lot of (at the time) cool features, made a mail program, and also a html wysiwyg editor. Then MS decided to improve IE. Then MS include IE in Windows. Then MS decided to make IE part of Windows and at the same time Netscape decided to stop improving Netscape to compete and now IE is really the number one browser for Windows and Apple machines (although Safari is coming along nicely on the Apple side) Now Netscape is just kinda like a lost cause a portal without any of the subscribers companies lie Yahoo have.
Google on the other hand doens't make a browser. They are a search engine with a minimalistic interface and a tons of great abilities and scalability to their service. MS doesn't really compete YET - i'm sure they do have plans too since they want to rule the world. Still Google makes it's money from 1) companies buying ad space and 2) companies buying it's technology to use for inhouse - Netscape sold a browser, which eventually wasn't worth $20
Will Google's search software continue to be worth whatever their price is? MS, IBM, Oracle, all make DB's and compete, but they aren't going to put eachother out of business because IBM and Oracle continue to make a better product - if Oracle decided not to update after 10g after 4 years they would be gone - a victim to whatever MS and IBM had come out with.
(yes Netscape did update, but they didn't have the stability, features, or function with websites that IE now has...
There is definately a broad list of topics you can fit in that blurb, however I fail to see the reason why we have a review (good review) of a book that doesn't quite seem to fit. If someone reviewed a Howard Stern book would we post it here? With this post it seems like we could, but I don't think that would fit in the "News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters" category.
An employee does something that is blatantly wrong and gets fired for it. Thats NORMAL.
What did he do that was blatantly wrong?
1) TAKES photos without permission of potential security breaches (taking pictures of loading docks is a no-no because it can help in theft) 2) POSTS photos on his website without permission
The guys a moron. He takes photos of a loading dock area that "could" have potentially contained locations of security cameras or information that could be used to help a thief. The guys a liability and should be fired.
As far as the G5's um... who cares - MS makes Virtual PC, Office, and a few other apps for Apple. What do you think they write their apple software on? What do you think thay test their Apple software on?
The reality is he could have taken a photo of the loading dock empty or with beanie babies or with Dual Xeon Intel or AMD 64bit whatever - it doesn't matter. If he has enough free time to wonder around the building taking photos of areas with potential liabilities. His ass is fired. End of story.
I don't understand why MS would fire someone for posting a photo of a crate of G5's and saying "looks like these dual 2ghz are headed for the bowels of redmond" (psuedo quote from blog site)
The photo doesn't reveal enough to even prove to me that it was even taken at a MS fascility - from the photo I see a white truck unloading several G5's. I don't see any labels and I don't see any indication of where this is. For all I know this could be a shipment to the macwarehouse by my place in San Jose, CA.
My guess is he got layed off or fired for being a lousy temp, and blamed it on the photo he had taken so that he could get some publicity to his blog and stir up some zealots to flame MS for being evil.
Of course if they did actually fire him for posting the photo, it would probably be more of a security issue - I know my boss wouldn't be too happy if I started taking pictures of say our security camers, loading docks, and alarm systems...
Could someone please tell this to my girl friend. She hates that I go into my "cave" and play FFXI or surf the web for hours upon hours instead of watching MTV's Real World Road Rules Super Duper Kerplunk Special.
from slashdot linking the site in the blurb :)
I wanna see a latin guy and FACE from the A-Team again not some yuppie and his man-she psuedo girlfriend!
Actually in all serious how cool would a remake of Buck Rogers be with Bruce Campbell as Buck Rogers?!

You mean we (SCO) actually have to come up wiht something now....I (SCO) was hoping they'd just settle for lots of $$ out of court. SHIT SHIT SHIT

The author was VERY kind to Fedora with his review - his final ratings were
Installation: 8.5/10
Hardware Support: 8/10
Ease of use: 6/10
Features: 7/10
Credibility: 6/10 (stability, bugs, security)
Speed: 7.5/10 (throughput, UI responsiveness, latency)
Overall: 7.16
With all the problems he had (literally TONS) and the fact that NO windows user would have put up with half of the issues (read: trouble installing apps and non-existant dependencies) and just gone "Yeah look why Linux sucks" I would have given it a 3/10 on use and a 4/10 on credibility.
