  1. Re:Fireworks. Fireworks. Fireworks. on Dreamweaver MX, Flash MX With CrossOver Office · · Score: 1

Fireworks is alright, but doesn't compete with Photoshop, it comptetes with Imageready which is great.

Also on a side personal note - I don't like seeing Vector tools in web programs, nothing on the web is going to be Vectorized, it may "look" like it is, but if it's in jpg, png, or gif format it's not (flash is the exception)

If I want to create Vector graphics for Print i'll use Illustrator which IMO is better than Freehand as well.

For the record Dreamweaver rocks the hell out of any other wysiwyg program available, especially Adobe's GoLive which sucks donkey ballz.

Sure you could type in random names in kazaa and see what comes up, but lets face it your listenign to the music you are right now because of
    1) A friend told you
    2) You heard a song on the radio and dloaded it from kazaa
    3) You heard a song on MTV and dloaded it on kazaa

So if you didn't have radio you would be left with MTV and VH1 telling you what songs are cool (SCARY considering I just saw a new Madonna/Britney video that sounded and looked HORRIBLE)

Getting back to my original point is that you need Radio to be able to find new music to listen too, unless you love everything you hear on MTV and VH1

Whenever I think of "Software crashing so bad it takes down the whole computer" I think it's probably more to do with that systems own problems and unstability than the software.

It reminds me of the time my friend tried to instal Norton Antivirus on his system and it crashed out during install and when he restarted his system hung at the waiting for local disk blurb.... The problem wasn't Norton, but rather a failing harddisk that had given plenty of signs with bad sectors, corrupt data, registry errors on startup and a host of other bugs he had ignored and eventually chaulked up to "must be a virus". Norton being the last thing installed was just bad timing for Norton. In the end a new harddrive later and a fresh install of everything (including Norton) the system is fine and working well.

Now granted there are occassional software bugs that lockup/freeze windows, but my personal opinion from my experience is that if I am not having any computer problems and an install bombs I try it again. If it does the exact same thing I hit up the manufacturers website for "known issues" if there is none listed I toss the software and don't look back until a patch or new version comes out.

"Go wireless with your Bluetooth XYZ which can transfer files back forth wirelessly with your home computer"

With statements/commercials advertising that it's almost as if they want you to think of Bluetooth as a competitor.

Personally I have no need for my phone to talk to my computer so I don't use/need bluetooth. What I do need is to transfer 200+meg files from my mac to my pc on a daily/hourly basis...

  12. I hate Bluetooth but.... on Is Bluetooth Dead? · · Score: 1

I think Bluetooth is also looked at as sort of an underdog competitor with 802.11b(g)(a) wireless standards and therefore a lot of people flock to it.

Of course weather or not Bluetooth exists or doesn't makes no difference to me because it's not a technology I utilize or have any interest in.

Then again I don't plan or expect my hardware to last forever.

As far as the power bill goes. I currently have a desktop, laptop, wireless router/hub and zaurus going the majority of the day - at least the systems are always on since I am too lazy to turn them off and have no need too. I also live with my girlfriend who runs the haridryer every morning and must have every light on in the house to check her makeup with. 17. Am I missing something? GIMP sucks - for me on GIMP goes SVG · · Score: 0, Troll

From this page which deals with telling "graphic designers" why they should switch...

"Gimp has a much smarter menu system that is far more efficient than theone present in Photoshop, or for that matter in all other image manipulation programs that we know of"
um. Wrong. Photoshop users 90% of the time also use Indesign, Illustrator, Imageready, Acrobat, or "some" other adobe product and all of them have a consistant interface with tools in the same or similar place, so moving to the GIMP could be a little confusing.

"Photoshop also has certain scripting capabilities, but it doesn't compare to the power of an advanced scripting language such as Perl. When it comes to scripting, we don't think it's unfair to compare Photoshop with a little baby and Gimp with a full-grown adult with 30 years of working experience. That's how big the difference is"
Graphic Designers are NOT programmers (usually) they are hired to make "shit look pretty" thats why most of photoshops scripts can actually just be recoreded like macros or scripted in simple text using simple "copy X - insert page - paste X" language

"Gimp can't handle anything other than 8 bit RGB, grayscale and indexed images. That's the big disadvantage of Gimp. Since Gimp doesn't support CMYK or spot colors such as PANTONE, Gimp can't compete with Photoshop in the prepress field.

Photoshop has more third-party plug-ins than Gimp. Yes, even though Gimp has around 220 real plug-ins at the moment and that number is constantly growing with around one plug-in every two weeks, there are still more plug-ins that you can buy as accessories to Photoshop, and they aren't available for Gimp.

Photoshop is also more effective (faster) when it comes to big images with a lot of layers (images bigger than 500x500 pixels)."

Are they really naive enough to think that a graphic designer would ONLY do webdesign and never be involved in the print area as well? Not to mention Photoshop also installs a program called Imageready which is what you use for webgraphics, if your using Photoshop by itself for webgraphics they are probably not animated and bloated in file size - Photoshop is more geared towards workign with print material where as Imageready is what we use for 500x500px type web stuff. Also my BIG pet-peeve with the GIMP is PANTONE! PANTONE! PANTONE! You know how many jobs for companies I get that use a specific pantone color in their logo? ALL OF THEM.

Sorry, I know some people here like the GIMP, but it's far inferior to Photoshop for Graphic Designers.

But what do I know - i'm not a programmer, not a IT monkey, and not a linux fan... I'm just a Graphic Designer. I'll just go back to my Apple and Windows machines now.
