Thankfully, the vast majority of beachgoers here are in shape, more or less, unlike the average American (or English) person. The multitude of gorgeous topless women here far outweigh the rare unattractive topless women and thankfully I am still able to choose where I look. Oh and I've never bothered watching Baywatch. Women with real and uncovered breasts playing a few meters from me are far more entertaining than semi-covered televised silicone boobies. Ah Spain, land of free, home of the brave!

As for style, my wife squeaked in delight for months on seeing them and often wanted no more than to "hug" them. They've even turned into small art and advertising billboards in the case of rental and corporate vehicles.

Just because the Smart Car may be lower on the survivability totem pole doesn't intrinsically make them "unsafe". I rode my bicycle in rush hour traffic in Washington, D.C. and nearby suburbs for over 20 years without a single accident with another vehicle (I did hit a few potholes that dismounted me abruptly).

Since I knew I was more at risk I didn't fall into a false sense of security. I religiously indicated my intentions to other traffic, made eye contact with other drivers, didn't brazenly run red lights/stop signs, weave in and out of stopped traffic, or any of the multitude of wantonly perilous activities other cyclists seemed bent on practicing.

Same in many respects with SUVs. People get this totally false idea that they are "safe" and thus drive like morons and end up killing themselves and others.

You say the US is a mid-sized nation. Isn't it #3 in both population and size?

You're right in that the United States rates as third in population and size.

But consider the fact that China is essentially the same size as the United States but has 4.5 times the population. Also, India is almost a third the size of the US but has 3.7 times the population. The US population is larger than Indonesia's population by 1/5th but Indonesia is more than 5 times smaller than the United States.

So in terms of densities, the United States ranks as a midsize country. If the European Union was considered a country it would edge out the US by around 100 million people. If the EU accepts Russia into the fold than it will be always twice the population of the US.

It is true that most of Europe is near zero-growth but I wouldn't use the word stagnant. That implies there's something wrong with zero-growth. It will undoubtedly mean a change in social spending but in positive direction. Fewer mouths to feed means better food for others.
