I disagree. HD is a huge improvement over SD whether it's 18" or 8 feet away. This move is a big blunder by Nintendo. Each generation, there are a few things that are no brainers when you come out with a console.
Last gen, it was 3D, CD-ROM storage and CD-Quality audio. Sony and Sega picked up on it, Nintendo missed that boat.
This gen, it was DVD playback, surround sound and Internet connectivity.
Next gen, it's wireless, HDTV, HDTV and HDTV. Everybody and their mother is going to buy an HDTV within the next 3 years and it's gonna piss me and a lot of other Nintendo fans that Nintendo is screwing us up like this.

While I've been enjoying my 6800GT and 7800GT cards, I'm worried by the fact that ATI can't seem to keep up. Ever since they lost the dominance they had aquired with their 9700/9800 series, They've been behind in performance, street dates, availability AND prices. It's already been 2 generations now. Any gamer knows that, today, nVidia reigns supreme.
I hope that ATi regains the upper hand in the next round because things are looking grim for them. nVidia is a bigger company with bigger coffers and better marketing skills so they can withstand bad times more easily than ATi. They handled the whole 5700/5800/5900 debacle very well considering ATi's offerings ate them alive back then. God forbid ATi should go bankrupt and we end up with a defacto nVidia monopoly!
Bullshit. The truth is that the developpers can CHOSE with the Xbox360. They can use microsoft's servers and all the standard tools and utilities that come with it (voice, IMs, rankings, categories and a whole other bunch of stuff)
OR,if their game is very heavily multiplayer and it's worth it for the developper to purchase and setup servers, beta test, tweak and maintain them and provide customer support for all of this, then they can use their own thing. That's exactly what Squenix is doing with FFXI. They're going to use their horrid PlayOnline software and make you pay THEM to play online.
Bottom line, The Microsoft approach is the right one, the Sony approach sucks. Simple as that.

Seems fishy to me that this guy would be sued for downloading movies. Usually, the **AAs go for the distributors, not the leechers. Any man could beat a charge of downloading a movie by buying a used DVD and claiming that he owned the movie all along and only wanted a backup or some such. I'd be shocked if a jury or judge didn't aquit him.

No, there will be no such impact. In fact, there won't be any impact at all. Microsoft Windows will, of course, support both BluRay and HD-DVD. The Xbox 360 uses regular Dual Layer DVDs anyways. Don't let a hypothetical HD-DVD version that MAY come out in the undetermined future cloud your judgment.
