My tax dollars at work, baby. Would it be better to keep it a secret shared only by hackers? Thanks to this student, people will be able to focus their investments on companies that build *real*, valuable technology, unlike SunnComm and their laughable protection schemes. Knowledge wants to spread. You cannot stop it.

Associated Press - The 6-year old daughter of an IBM engineer was killed after the Cindy Smart doll she received as a birthday present overheard the girl's father in the adjacent room yelling "F***! Where the hell did I put my Linux distro CDs?". Apparently, the doll immediately strangled the little girl in response. Although the police initially thought the doll's reaction was triggered by the use of the F word, it was later determined that the embedded version of Windows CE snapped on the utterance of the word "Linux". Microsoft could not be reached today. The toy's manufacturer canceled plans for a similar version for boys that was to be dubbed Smarmy Darl.

  10. Google Owns Applied Semantics So... on Digging Holes in Google · · Score: 2, Informative

Let's not forget that Applied Semantics, formerly Oingo, invented pretty good technology to perform meaning-based searching of the Internet. The Oingo site, now defunct, was actually pretty cool. You'd do a search on "apple" and it would offer you to refine the meaning of apple: Which kind? The fruit? The computer? Etc. I would not be surprised if Google were to integrate the technology they now own into the Google site, which would make MSN's article quite obsolete. Just wait for a year or so.

  14. Microsoft Refutes Oxford Researchers' Conclusions on Debugging in OSS Always Faster · · Score: 4, Funny

A spokesperson at Microsoft refuted the conclusions of two french researchers from Oxford University this afternoon, saying that the business model behind Open Source was flawed anyway, since fewer bugs meant less urgency in updating to newer versions of software where old annoying bugs had been eliminated (only to be replaced with fresh one in anticipation of the subsequent forced release). The spokesperson also mentioned the enormous success of Microsoft's recent Closed Source initiative, under Bill Gates's supervision, to make computing more stable and secure, and finished by indicating that the UK government, who is being turned by Microsoft into a strong Open Source opponent (see recent Slashdot story), belonged to them anyway, and that the "frogs" would be deported to France shortly.

However, with the best categorization technology out there (http://www.vivisimo.com), I might find him because he would be in some, say, Computer Science category assuming that he is a computer scientist. Sure, you can add "computer" to the list of keywords in Google but it's not the panacea when you're doing serious research.
