I've read an article about this, it mentions the possibility of such a machine handling the life support systems in a hospital. Major lawsuit there.
Yeah. A lawsuit for whoever had an internet connected machine running a life-support system and set to auto-update.
Software updates on mission-critical systems should only happen manually, and after strict auditing.
I won't even bother addressing how much of a bad idea it would be to have a life-support machine able to access (or be directly accessed from) the internet.
Unfortunately, as your last sentence implies, that falls apart when someone in a position of power over you decides that the things that you are proud of are sinful, evil, or grounds for suspicion.
You can't control what other people think of your actions, even though there may be absolutely nothing wrong with your actions.
L but your misbehavior will probably flag you as a spoil sport who won't be receptive to spam.
Since when has that mattered to them?
Soon after the Telezapper showed up on the market, the call centers installed countermeasures.
For some reason they thought it was a good idea to call people who had gone to some effort and expense to *not* be called...
How receptive do you suppose those people are to spam?
Today, most people in China and Russia support their regimes, including oppression of dissenters. Iranian death penalty for homosexuals law has widespread popular support.
Climate science is in its infancy,.........
Setting up a Climate Service today would be akin to setting up an Astrology Service. They would probably both give equally good advice.
Just how mature was the science of meteorology 140 years ago?
They can't simply create an experiment and observe the results like physics or chemistry. They need to improve their methods through a more empirical method. And that takes time. A lot of it.
These proprietary plastic sheets sound a bit like a consumable to me.
Yeah, they're re-usable. But if it's stuck in a filing cabinet then you can't re-use it now can you.
Actually if either is crap then the whole thing is not worth owning.
A phone with a crap radio is not usable just like one that randomly locks up it's UI.
On the other hand, they could concentrate on their strengths, and manufacture RF chipsets for third parties. Then someone who's focus is software or UI or slick packaging can focus on what they do well, and have a chance of turning out a solid end product.
They seem to like being a certain size and when they grow beyond it they divide.
That may be incredibly wise of them.
I've worked for a couple of companies who started off very innovative and did a lot of smart things until they grew above a certain size. Then they became bloated, bureaucratic and stopped innovating. And the bigger they got the more concerned with internal processes they became, yet the less profitable they became.
I've lived inside that twice, and I've seen it happen to countless other companies.
Or, you know, make sure that kids have to live closer to where they go to school and then make them walk to school.
You have never lived outside of a densely populated urban area, have you?
As a farm kid, I spent about an hour on the bus each day.
I did ride my bike some days when it was warm enough, but 6 miles each way (2 of which were gravel road) took a lot of time away from chores, homework and sports.
Our bus driver installed a car stereo in the bus (at his own expense) and put on the rock station to keep us quiet.
Boys looking at porn with a bus-full of their classmates? Girls making themselves looking nicer than professional porn stars - you think porn stars in general are beautiful?
Of course not, but the girls see that those porn stars have the attention of the boys, and they want to draw that attention so....
The only work site I have to use that says "IE Only" works just fine in Safari.
Or FF with the IE Tab plugin (though technically that's still using IE)
Then (at least in Canada, and I expect other commonwealth countries) you would be excluded as a juror for having a potential, or perceived bias.
Same as if you had ever had any interaction with the accused, either of the lawyers, any of the police officers or witnesses involved, or any of the other jurors before the trial.
In a trial where such information means the difference between
innocence and guilt, you either need everyone to have my level of understanding, or expect me to play dumb and
listen to TweedleDee and TweedleDum argue about whether computers run by pixie dust or really small gerbils running on
their wheels.
The judge int the trial I was a juror for explicitly told us that we could rely on our entire life's experience in reaching our decision. She also told us that the variety in our collective experiences is among the things that can help us as a group identify the truth of the evidence and arguements.
In that jury room there was an ambulance attendant, a baggage handler, a retired teacher, a couple of office workers, an electronics repair tech, and a guy who drives a garbage truck. The professional experiences of most of those were used as datapoints in the groups discussions.
Exactly. That's why they give you *gasp* a pen and paper!
Actually, they don't allow that here unless there are special requirements for the trial. No recording or communications devices and no notes.
For varying values of "here"
If here=Canada, then you are given pen and paper, and instructed not to read about, or communicate about the trial which you are a juror for. You are further instructed to not disclose the discussions which happen in the jury room to anyone. Ever.
Actually, I was not thinking of any one particular nation
The Middle East has a long history of foreigners taking an interest in the place, generally to the detriment of the local population, or the incumbent leadership.
Which doesn't seem like a problem, until they decide that they resent your meddling, then they attack you with your own weapons.
Which no one ever seems to see coming each time it happens.
What if your name is Prince?
Then you can demand that there be giraffes in your back yard before the sun rises tomorrow.

Or so we are told by their state media...

How much more information would it take to identify this guy to his wife? Or to someone who might want to embarrass him for some reason?
How about the USA keeps there dictatorial policy on their own continent?
Hey, what do you have against us Canadians?
The Americans can keep their own rules and unilateralism within their own borders, thank you very much.
My nipples explode with delight! My hovercraft is full of eels.
It sounds like there will be a lot of X-Boxes coming onto the used market soon, for cheap. ...
Now, what to do with them

The Dune series was the biggest test for my "if I start a series, I finish it" rule.
Clearly you never read Mission Earth
I think I've only ever met 1 person stubborn enough to finish them all. I gave up after 4 books.
