Doesnt delaying vista make it better for customers? As a user, I am on the side of making it better. I have seen 2 groups of people complaining that its delayed. Investors and people that want MS to fail. For the average user, I think it is to their benefit for the OS to work well, instead of be released early and buggy. If it released before its ready, wont that make for a backlash against MS and potentially send more people to Linux and Apple? Wont this actually hurt investors more than a delay? Maybe I am simple in my thinking but Im not sure I understand business. I think in the long run, Vista will make more money by actually showing that MS is capable of releasing an OS that is actually stable, and secure.

My 30 inch screen looks great even with divx movies at a low res and bitrate. My 60 inch SXBR on the other hand clarly shows the limits of the divx files. DVDs look pretty good, HD-DVDs look better. The difference is in the bitrate on the large screens. This is the clear benefit I can see from the new formats. Black backgrounds look MUCH better on a large screen. Check it out yourself if you dont believe me.

Wow, does slashdot now need to goto MSNBC to find negative things about Microsoft? This is pretty bad as I wouldnt trust anything the mass media says regarding computers (even if it is owned by MS). Sony is a group of companies. Grouping them all together and making general opinions of the company is a big mistake. They have many divisions, and many of them make good products. Sony IS a clear example of how making too big of a company is a mistake. However, I am reading more and more about how people will never buy another sony device becasue of this and that. I would recommend checking out their TVs and monitors separately from their software and media, they are clearly not managed by the same people.

Mostly agreed, however, dont forget that Sony TVs are still by far the best. The XBR is far superior to anything else in its class. The price is competitive, and its made in USA!!! I dont mean the low end TVs either. Low end TVs are all cheap, and are exactly what you pay for, regardless of the company. High emd Sony TVs are much more robust in the features, and the pictures seem to just look better (my opinion of course).

How can it be both? How can MS do no good, no matter WHAT? I am no fan of MS, but these contrasting arguments are not really enough to convince people to use linux on a regular basis.

Hmm... Let's see. First, Linux on a pc is good becasue its cheap. Universities have THOUSANDS of computers and each one has a license paid to microsoft. To not pay this would free up money for tuition for students, lab supplies or other software or hardware. This is very easy. I am a scientist working in the field of Neurophysiology and Rehab Medecine. I use the PCs for high speed video and analysis. The dual core athlon 64 cpus allow for extremely fast simultaneuous capture of high speed video from up to 12 cameras runing at 500 frames per second. I can compress the video to nice open source codecs using free opensource software like virtualdub. The analysis of the video is greatly aided by running 4 monitors (12 video sources!!!) The option to switch in and out of SLi allows for this very easliy. There are numerous other data capture processing techniques that I use. I am sure you can do most of this with a Mac too, but when I can compress a video and play a game at the same time, I just love that athlon 64. I dont mean to start a fight here, but please, I have a Phd, Masters, and 2 bachelors degrees. I am now working in the 4th year of my Post Doctoral Fellowship. However, I DO like to frag online when I cant leave the lab for hours on end becasue of extended background data processing or some other extended procedure. So if my opinion doesnt matter, why did I buy all the PCs for 3 compaines and numerous labs last year? This amounted to over 3000 computers. I would say my opionion does matter.

Well, after reading this article, I have even less faith in the news from cnet. What type of video card are they using that they cant get windows to display? I have no problems at all getting any of my systems to display via s-video, DVI, or component out on several Sony HDTV's. I can get them to display native 1080i, 720p, or even 480i via component out. I didnt do anything special other than install the current drivers. Secondly, they say that media center cant export video to an ipod. Well, not natively, but with 4 pushes of my mouse I have it on my ipod video. Very very simple, again no hacking involved here. I just installed a simple free program and use nero (or other programs). This is a joke. Finally, talking about the TV downloads on itunes. They must be kidding, I personally will not violate my HDTV with the less than stellar video and ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE audio from these video downloads. I cant believe they even brought this up in talking about a media center.
