They are used to being the default choice and now that they are not. Also they do not have the broadest base of apps to draw people in thus sales have gone nowhere.

Sonds like the firmware got corrupted. My wife took her 3GS (1 year old to the day) in to the apple store last night. A tech looked at it, found it reported ~8 hours of battery life but 700 days of standby time. Obviously this was not right, found the firmware was corrupted and asked if she would permit a wipe and restore. Apparently this caused some errors in the back and a few min later he came back with a new phone for her.

As it was the last day of the included warranty it only cost us a few minutes of our time. Note that as it was the firmware that was the problem she could not do a full restore from her computer. Just reinstalled apps, some restored data some did not. And had to re-setup to her liking.

Some trophy enabled games failed to init properly (Heavy Rain is one such game) and would quit. While others would load and play fine. I played Fallout 3 sunday evening but the catch was it zero'd out my local trophy data, as if I had never played the game. Not sure what would have happened if I earned one during my playtime that night. If anyone is curious now that everything working again I restored my trophies by launching the game (init to 0%) then quit and re-synced my trophy data with the PSN servers. This restored all the missing data.

Also there were reports of some fat PS3's that were not effected by the bug at all. Just like the new slim models.

  14. Re:Time for a little history lesson... on New Nintendo DS to Include Camera, Music · · Score: 1

About the Wii you are mostly right. You do not have to connect to the net and still have to manually start a update. But some games require a firmware update before you can play. I think Metroid or Mario Galaxy was one such game. So Nintendo can force people to upgrade, assuming they want to play the shinny new game they just purchased.

Not so sure about that. From VGChartz post.

    In US/NA, attach ratios are:
    X360: 6.16
Wii: 4.29 (including Wii Sports + Wii Play)
    PS3: 3.54

    Japan its:
    X360: 3.57
    Wii: 2.54
    PS3: 1.67
And the 360 has a extra year of games for people to choose from. While I do agree there are people who only have a few Wii games there are always a group of people who only buy a few games per console. I know plenty of people with a PS2 and only have Madden, GTA3 and maybe another game or two. Same for XBox Halo 1/2 and another game or two.

I thought Dell did this when you installed Linux on one of their computers. It voided the warranty. Think there was a Slashdot article about it too.
I had a friend in college who had to take Dell to small claims court because they refused to honor the warranty. He downgraded from XP to 2k (I think it was XP could have been ME). They used that as an excuse to brush him off. He won because his computer came with and still had the sticker that said "Certified for Windows XP / 2000". So Dell was unable to argue that Windows 2000 was unsupported and voided the warranty.

  22. Re:Who cares? on Some Truth to Wii as GameCube 1.5? · · Score: 1

I think what really matters is that everybody considers the Wii a safe buy. While the other consoles have GTA style games, the Wii is something that parents and grandparents view as a fun toy for the entire family. I've yet to hear any of the normal concerns about video game violence applied to the Wii.
Thats just because they are not looking closely at the game selection. If things continue the Wii will be the PS2 of this generation, with the "hardcore" (read gfx heavy) games going to the 360 in US/Europe and PS3 (I guess) in Japan. There are already a number of violent games out for the Wii. In fact the most violent game I've ever played in 25 years is on it (Godfather).

But I do agree with you that the perception is that Wii/Nintendo = kid safe. For the most part this is true. But perception is not always reality.
