  1. It's technologically not possible on Why There Are No Hit Indie Games · · Score: 1

The inherant differences are enough to explain this.

    1) A film is technologically MUCH easier to make than a game.

    2) Films have a consumer base of almost 100%, games are much lower, maybe 50% counting consols, and how many indie games are on consols?

    3) Films are consumables, you watch a film 1-2 times in your life, some people can play the SAME game 1-10 years, everyday even, therefor they will be MUCH LESS likely to play other games.

    4) A game is a MAJOR time investment usually, therefor consumers will take fewer chances playing a risky game.

    5) Films have been around a lot longer than games, their market is bigger, more accepted, etc...

For a group to make a AAA quality film (without visual effects) is FAR easier than to make than a AAA game.

I totally agree, just wait when MS announces their break through pricing of their HD DVD addon player this xmas for $99. You can already get stand alone HD-DVD players for $200. The added cost for BluRay is nothing more than Sony trying to totally control yet another storage format.

I also think a HUGE part of the PS2s continued success is how easy it is to copy games for it, the PS3 is a whole new ballgame.

The ONLY difference between now and then is now they are admitting to recording all this, when in fact they probably have been for 20 years secretely, besides, anyone with $50 can buy your whole life on a CD-ROM, its not like you have any real privacy to begin with. "A car that could save the planet--fast"

    BAHAHAHAH...

    "II. Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles are incapable of replacing more than a small fraction (5 or maybe 10%) of the 700 million internal combustion engine powered cars on the road due to the limits of battery technology. Dr. Walter Youngquist explains:

. . . a gallon of gasoline weighing about 8 pounds has the same energy as one ton of conventional lead-acid storage batteries. Fifteen gallons of gasoline in a car's tank are the energy equal of 15 tons of storage batteries. Even if much improved storage batteries were devised, they cannot compete with gasoline or diesel fuel in energy density. Also, storage batteries become almost useless in very cold weather, storage capacity is limited, and batteries need to be replaced after a few years use at large cost. There is no battery pack which can effectively move heavy farm machinery over miles of farm fields, and no electric battery system seems even remotely able to propel a Boeing 747 14 hours nonstop at 600 miles an hour . . .

Some promising research into new battery technlogies using lithium is being performed, but even the scientists at the forefront of this research admit, "We've got a long way to go."

Assumming these problems away, the construction of an average car also consumes 120,000 gallons of fresh water. Unfortunately, the world is in the midst of a severe water crisis that is only going to get worse in the years to come. Scientists are already warning us to get ready for massive "water wars."

Thus, the only way for us to replace our current fleet of gas-guzzling SUVs with fuel-efficient hybrids or electric vehicles is to seize control of the world's reserves of both oil and fresh water and then divert those resources away from the billions of people who already rely on them.

Even if were willing to undertake such an endeavor, the problem will still not be solved due to a phenomenon known as "Jevon's Paradox," whereby increases in energy efficiency are obliterated by corresponding increases in energy consumption.

The US economy is a good example of Jevon's Paradox in action. Since 1970, we have managed to cut in half the amount of oil necessary to generate a dollar of GDP. At the same time, however, our total level of oil consumption has risen by about fifty percent while our level of natural gas and coal consumption have risen by even more. Thus, despite massive increases in the energy efficiency over the last 35 years, we are more dependent on oil than ever. This trend is unlikely to be abated in a market economy, where the whole point is to make as much money (consume as much energy) as possible." - http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/SecondPage.htm l

  8. Rental Wars on New Piracy Loss Estimate · · Score: 1

I haven't bought a single DVD since I started my subscription to Blockbuster Online. With Netflix and Blockbuster Online competing, prices are very reasonable, why would anyone buy a movie when they can have any DVD in existance sent directly to their door within 1 day? I'm sure piracy is to blame for some of the lost sales, but realistically 90% of the people who pirate aren't going to buy the movie.

Fortunately for them, most of the time this aligns well with consumer interest, making them 'appear' as a good wholesome company, give it another 5 years when they have 99% of the internet ad and search market and then they will suddenly become the 'DEBIL' (sp. waterboy reference).

Concerts are the only thing they can control, its hard to pirate a concert (not the music, the experience of seeing the artist live). At any rate this is probably better for the industry as the artists typically get much more from concerts than media, ideally the industry should just transition to free media and charge for concerts.

So they must attempt to be different by using a gimmicky controller. Instead of just using 1 stupid controller, they should bundle the consol with a bunch of unique controllers, a cool light gun, powerpad, DDR pad, some other crazy motion controllers like a baseball bat/golf club, that would be really unique and be a lot of fun for the family.

Personally I think the most open format will win, and being on the PC will be a major plus, which HD-DVD should do first since they have such huge ties to MS.

Also I think most people will support HD-DVD just because they are tired of SONY releasing a totally new proprietary media type every month, what do they have now, like 5 different formats just for digital cameras that only work with their devices?

As for having multiple formats being a bad thing, perhaps in the long run, but for the short run it is great, at least we won't have $5000 entry level HDDVD players for years like with all past formats, 2 models are already on sale at crutchfield for like $500, thats awesome.
