This is great news really. With the supercomputers built for weapons research naturally people doing "normal" research will have problems getting access.

But with non weapons research systems I can see academics from all over the world getting easier access and maybe something interesting can happen.

Personally for 5 bucks a month i much rather support redhat networks.

Why? Cause mandrake update sucks! No centralized ftp plus unrealiable mirror updates. I have to wait ages for the mirrors to get those much needed security updates. Then i have to watch mandrake update tells me whoops although we think you didn't have this rpm you turn out to have it or whoops the mirror's version is corrupted. Leaving me wondering if i needed the patch or if i have it or what. Good thing i am behind a firewall.

Sure i could have just downloaded them manually but seriously with up2date is so much easier to use in redhat i am just annonyed.

Plus there is no text version of mandrake update. How do you expect to run anything but a desktop off it.

Don't get me wrong I used mandrake on my desktop and I like it fine. But i'll never trust it for anything serious.

Not really. Communist believes from each his/her best and to each their needs.

Open Source is sort of do for others as been done for you.

There are differences between them. The former communist states all attemped state control of everything so that everyone gets a equal share. While opensources means you control your own stuff only you have to let others borrow off you.

I rather think microsoft's notion is more communist really. They know best so they control because you silly weak minded fools can't be trusted to do what's best for everyone.

  12. Re:Poor CD key algorithm on Blizzard, Bnetd Respond on Bnetd Shutdown · · Score: 1

I don't see this as being valid. First off to pirate their game all u need is a friend's copy and their cd key. The ability of blizzard to keep their games from being pirated is moot. You can copy diablo2 or warcraft or any of their games for single player mode or lan game no problems.

When you go on bnet is the cd key validated and only one key can be used at a time. This involve some sort of server on bnet most likely a massive machine.

The thing is i don't see why bnet can't work with the developers of bnetd to add key verification to bnetd. It doens't have to mean that their algorithm is exposed. All the bnetd server does is sent off a message to bnet and get a respond. The request could easily be public key signed so only the bnet server can understand it.

Now sure that doens't solve the problem of people producing versions of bnet that'll by pass this ssytem. But then that's not the problem of the bnetd people right? They are not commiting the crime. So in this way you can get better ping for your slow connections and still make sure people are using real copies ot play online.

I know it does have possibilities of being quitte a logistical nightmare. But i think blizzard should look into this before pulling out the lawyers.

I think people should mod this reply up.

Quite clearly with so many 1 G cpus it is a rather diapppointing performer. Concidering IBM built two other clusters using 256 1 G cpus and it's about a 66 places higher putting out 66 GFlops more.

That's doesn't make the windows cluster look too hot. Maybe it's cause dell's not used to doing this kind of work. Or maybe the GUI does end up sucking quite a bit of resource.

  16. I think they are buying the wrong distro on AOL in Negotiations to Buy Red Hat? · · Score: 1

I could think of at least two distro that'll make better purchase for AOL then redhat.

Sure redhat is the biggest and it has alot of good things going for it. But if AOL buys RedHat redhat will bring alot of baggage in support contracts and their current focus on servers don't make them the best desktop distro.

I see buying Mandrake or what's left of corel's distro being a better choice. First off you already have a nicer interface then what redhat has. KDE still beats gnome when it comes to first time users. Also without so much business as redhat has distros like Mandrake could be easier to mold into what AOL wants and so on.

However dispite all this i still think AOL buying any linux distro instead of say investing and supporting our development is a bad idea.
