  1. Re:People want windows on Linux on the Tipping Point · · Score: -1

Way to make an over-generalization there. Can't get two devices to work, so Windows hardware support sucks. I guess this is all about personal experience, though. I've had a few hardware headaches in Windows, as I'm sure everyone has had. I've had more hardware issues under Linux, though. I'm not saying Linux hardware support is worse; I think they both support a decent amount of hardware fine. The thing is that most Linux distros come with a metric ton of drivers. The single Windows CD-ROM can only hold a finite number of drivers. For most newer hardware you have to download drivers to get the newest version. If Windows came on 3 or 4 CD-ROMS it would probably have drivers for everything. The problem with Windows drivers is that they depend on binary compatibility. With Linux, when some interface or something in the kernel is changed you can just recompile (most of) your drivers. With Windows, it is up to the device manufacturers to provide new binaries. Windows has maintained pretty decent binary-compatible over the years, though.

Not to flame, but in my own personal experience I've had more problems with Linux than Windows.

Nobody's identity was stolen. Someone "hacked" Paris Hilton's pictures / address book and posted everything online. Identity theft? Absolutely not. Invasion of personal privacy? Yes.

I really think this should be a story on YRO. As I understand it, the person who got this information never even touched Hilton's phone. He just got into Hilton's account and could access everything online; all the stuff is stored on a T-Mobile server somewhere. Hell, maybe he just guessed a really weak password. This should serve as a reminder to us normals that your personal information is anything but personal in the digital age. We should stress strong passwords, other means of identification, and encryption. And who will be held accountable? Paris Hilton is famous, therefore someone must be held accountable. Maybe that someone's job is not so different than yours. People write this off as another dumb Paris Hilton moment, but it really isn't. This could have just as easily happened to anybody else, famous or not.

In addition to what you said, the "editors" often use a script to post stories. They will sift through their inbox at the start of their shift, pick some stories for the day, and a script will post them every 30 minutes (or whatever durating the "editor" chooses). The only reason Slashdot needs more than one "editor" is because interesting stories will be submitted throughout the day, so something good might be missed after the initial queue of stories is filled. It boggles my mind that "Slashdot 'editor'" is a paying job.

It's quite obvious that the editors don't even bother to search for dupes on the front page. I remember one time when a dupe was posted and the original was 3 stories down on the front page. If "Slashdot 'editor'" is a paying job, surely someone can be paid to be a "Slashdot dupe checker".

It almost seems like they just don't care anymore. Just post enough stories so that it looks like you're doing work and the paycheck will come.

It'as always the same. The day or time you go doesn't matter. There are only three lanes open. One is the express lane, which I never use because I always stock up when I shop. The other two lanes share a single bagger, and there is always an old lady in front of you who gets the bagger to push her cart out to her car. So you get stuck with some girl still in high school who couldn't add or subtract to save her life. She scans all your stuff very slowly, and probably won't help you bag your groceries. With a few spies, a truck, and a couple of hours, you have a nuke in any number of hostile nations. A few days, and it could be anywhere in the world.
