  2. Re:heavy + bulky + expensive == better! on Cisco's Tablet Act Like a Desktop · · Score: 1

    Inferior is hardly an appropriate phrase. The device is Android powered, has solid central management (You're on drugs if you think I'm going to activate and deploy iPads via iTunes.) and most importantly, integrates well with Cisco's voice and video servers. I have a single device that provides a) thin client functionality b) a softphone for use with CUCM / CallManager and c) acts as a video conferencing endpoint for telepresence. As someone who works in corporate IT with a lot of Cisco gear, this device is godsend. That being said, in our organization we don't blacklist apps for phones or anything like that unless it interferes with productivity. I'm pretty excited for this.

    I recently disassembled a 60GB unit to repair a YLOD and can confirm that launch PS3 units have the Emotion Engine / PS2 CPU chip directly on board.

    I'd also like to recommend to Slashdot readers the cheap PS3 route; I bought a YLOD 60GB unit (with a 320 GB drive in it) for $100 off Cragslist. Disassemble it, remove thermal compound from the RSX and Cell, and bake the motherboard in an oven at 425 for 12 minutes. I've done this twice, and gotten good results both times. I think I'm the best uncle ever; I gave this 60GB PS3 to my nephews since I already have one. I think taking a broken PS3 and fixing it in front of them is waaaaaaaaaaay cooler than just buying one at the store : )

  13. Re:Perhaps a placebo effect? on Fungivarius Beats $2 Million Stradivarius Violin · · Score: 1

    I was actually reading about this the other day...

    Above all, these instruments are famous for the quality of sound they produce. However, the many blind tests from 1817 to the present (as of 2000) have never found any difference in sound between Stradivarii and high-quality violins in comparable style of other makers and periods, nor has acoustic analysis.[2] In a particularly famous test on a BBC Radio 3 program in 1977, the great violinists Isaac Stern and Pinchas Zukerman and the violin expert and dealer Charles Beare tried to distinguish among the "Chaconne" Stradivarius, a 1739 Guarneri del Gesú, an 1846 Vuillaume, and a 1976 British violin played behind a screen by a professional soloist. The two violinists were allowed to play all the instruments first. None of the listeners identified more than two of the four instruments; two of the listeners identified the 20th-century violin as the Stradivarius.[3]

    The violinist Christian Tetzlaff formerly played "a quite famous Strad", but switched to a violin made in 2002 by Stefan-Peter Greiner. He states that the listener cannot tell that his instrument is modern, and he regards it as excellent for Bach and better than a Stradivarius for "the big Romantic and 20th-century concertos."[4]

  14. Re:MS needs to be thinking about the 720 on Microsoft Drops Xbox 360 Pricing · · Score: 2, Interesting

    Hardware sales have more or less been in line with each other when release dates are aligned. The Xbox obviously has higher total numbers given its earlier release. Cost wise the PS3 has a substantial advantage (Free online play, built in wifi, blu-ray player)

    Exclusives are a fair split these days, IMHO, a PS3 exclusive tends to look better than an Xbox exclusive. [Note: I OWN AN XBOX, AND LOVE IT. Quick plug... my PSN and XBL name is Malcorin :- ) Feel free to add me.]

    I think a lot of hardcore gamers would like to have both, and $299 is a price which seems to make that realistic. To quote a close friend of mine, "The price drop was exactly what I was waiting for".

    Look at Kiwi CatTools. Its a couple hundred bucks and supports the management of hundreds of devices via scripted CLI. I use it to manage all of my Cisco devices for config backups, etc. If your org can't spare a couple hundred for this management utility, then you have bigger problems than wifi. Kiwi also does a TON of other neat things, like configuration comparisons side by side.

    First and foremost: I own a PS3, an Xbox 360, and a Wii. I love all of them.

    My girlfriend loves my Xbox. She bought her own controller that she put stickers on. She's often the one bringing up the idea of playing video games or checking out 1 vs 100.
    The draw? She LOVES her Xbox avatar. It seems like every time she comes over she's completely overhauling her outfit. She made an offhand comment about how dressing up her avatar replaces her need to go shopping. Me, on the other hand? I rarely change my avatar. I did give him a monocle a couple of weeks ago; its pretty awesome :- )

    But yea, if this stuff doesn't apply to you, don't worry. It isn't meant to. It does, however, bring girlfriends closer to the gaming, which we can all agree is a good thing. Who knew we could learn so much from Nintendo?
