I hope the time you spent looking up each terriories variation for your response was educational. You made the fact that you did pretty obvious by splitting up PAL and 'Aussie'. I patiently await your thirty-second Google researched response on how I'm now incorrect about the passing of UN Resolutions.

Thanks, oh mighty OFLC for deciding that because my 17 year old sister (no pix requests) can't handle they game, her 28 year old brother (that'd be me. pix+divx on request) can't either.

No doubt there are a lot of people that couldn't give two shits about the game (I'm still trying to hunt down a copy of JSRF from ebay) that will now seek out (and I don't mean pay for) copies to see what the fuss was about ... no wait, I mean to see how to STICK IT TO THE MAN and how to correctly draw graffiti on walls. 10. What am I missing here? + BONUS OFLC RANT on Banned Games Find Ways To Bypass Authority · · Score: 1

People found in possession of refused classification material or those distributing it can face a variety of penalties as outlined under relevant State and Territory classification enforcement legislation. However as OFLC restrictions act purely as a guideline for consumers and law enforcement

That last sentence confuses me. Their 'restrictions' act purely as a 'guideline'. THEY DISALLOW THE GAME TO BE SOLD IN AUSTRALIA, and as the previous sentence says, there are penalities for owning the games they've refused the classify. How the fuck is this a 'guideline'? It's censorship, plain and simple.

Games censorship is a real sore point for me so I'll do my best to avoid a rant (fake edit : I obviously failed that), but anyone that has followed the efforts of the OFLC and their work on games classification knows that they are the biggest bunch of clueless fucking idiots you'll ever have the misfortune to have deciding what you can and can't play/watch.

The joke that was the original Grand Theft Auto 3 rating was actually outlined on a PDF on their site, which presumably is still around in some form. It actually detailed the fact that of the 5 people that were reviewing the game for censorship, all 5 were not in the standard gamer demographic (which is much older than you might think) and that they actually lamented that none of the people present could actually play the game with any basic amount of skill, which made it harder to actually work out what the game involved. Then they banned it purely based on the fact that they game allowed you to attack and kill someone that the game had previously shown you 'having sex with' (for those who don't know, 'having sex' with a hooker in GTA3 was simply the two of you sitting in the car, as if you were driving it or whatever, and the car creaking up and down). It was, like all other attempts at classification, highly idiotic and completely brain dead. An edited version was released in Australia with the ability to pick up hookers removed. The PS2 version was also recalled after this (wish I could source a copy of the recalled version, just for nostalgic value) and re-released with the highly offensive content removed.

The best part about all this is that, after ordering the uncensored PC version of the game from the UK, which was intercepted by customs, and much gritting teeth and swearing at the customs officer when I asked why, as a 25 year old male was I not being allowed to view a game deemed unsuitable for people under 18, I picked up a local copy from a store on the way home, and got home to find that changing the Country setting on Windows allowed the game to be played in US mode, with the ability to pick up hookers enabled. I did it twice before getting bored of it, and never did it again.

Also, they appear to be scared of sexual references. Lesuire Suit Larry MCL was outright banned here without a second thought, while Manhunt was allowed through, and was only later subsequently banned after some moronic vote hunting politian in Western Australia demanded the OFLC reconsider their rating (I.E. he probably saw it as easy vote money due to the content and told them to ban it). BMX XXX was banned until the video with nude women (no violence, no nothing, just videos of strippers) was removed/edited. I mean, for crying out loud, these are the idiots that actually wouldn't allow Duke Nukem 3D to have the topless strippers show you their goods for money, and they didn't allow the pods that held naked women to be anything but empty pods. I have the original DN3D disc at home, plus a floppy with the US .exe which enabled all this.

Regardless of what they think, they can't stop people from watching/playing what they wan't. I mean, in the end, it's just a game. The people that see it as more than that obviously have mental issues that don't affect 99.9% of the gamer population. And I don't see why I, as a 28 year old gamer, should have to be denied access to a game purely because it's been deemed unsuit

Games can take existing genres and either improve upon them or simply be entertaining in their own right. They dont have to be new ALL the time, otherwise there would be about 20 games in total, ever. 'Games with soul' means a game where you are in awe of the experience the game provides you. Where the controls are so streamlined, the interface so clean and the gameplay so pure that you forget that you are playing a game and just get immersed in the experience, and the game does its best to never knock you out of that feeling. Its a game that, as you play it, you feel as though the game has been made by GAMERS, who would be proud to put their name to this game, and who would love to play their own game, instead of just shovelling crap out the door to meet financial quotas. Nail, meet hammer. That's right, right on the head. There you go.

I'm in exactly the same situation to you, although in my case I must admit to being naive to the facts at first. I heard all about how Halo was up there with sliced bread, and remember it being one of the first games I picked up for my xbox. From start to finish I was wondering what the hell I was missing. I actually kept playing just in case I was going to suddenly be awed by whatever people went on about. The few small sections with the flying vehicles were fun, all else felt like work. I actually put the game down for a couple of months because I simply couldn't stand it. It has the honor of being the very reason I nowadays simply refuse to bother playing boring games to the end, when normally I would purely because I'm already half way thru, even realising I'm really not having any fun.

The level design was, lets face it, abysmal (I'm still in awe of hearing that people have actually claimed to love the Library) and it was simply the base of the rest of what is a very mediocre game. Many a 'discussion' was had with people that all this had been done before, and much better, and that this was a very average game that they appeared to be viewing thru rose tinted glasses.

Then the exact same thing that you have said occured to me. All the people that love this game and proclaim it as the best game ever, do so because it's the first real FPS they've experienced, and the first time they seen the simple beauty of blowing your friends away in deathmatch. It's the equivalent to our generations Doom (even if level design wise Halo has more akin with Wolf3D), and it's loved just as much. And exactly as you've said, when we first experienced Doom it was the best game ever, because that simply hadn't been done before.

Now there is the problem of a large majority of PC gamers that see Halo for the standard, nothing special FPS that it is, while all the people for whom Halo is their first experience, can't understand why all us GHEY FAGGOTZZZ!!!111 don't worship at the Halo altar. It would be great if maybe they could appreciate the experience that we've had to regard Halo as nothing special, but maybe because of the apparent age bracket of a lot of Halo fans, that may not happen. Who knows.

(Sure, I lost any chance of karma with that last paragraph, but sometimes you just get sick and tired of hearing the same old HALO ROOLZ bullshit over and fucking over again. And the people that HAVE played PC FPS and STILL regard Halo as the best thing ever ... simply avoid eye contact and back away slowly.
