We all have accepted DRM to a POINT. Having to have a DVD in a DVD drive to play a game was a annoying, BUT it was something I was willing to put up with because it still felt like I owned the game. However, this new DRM which REQUIRES online activation AND limits instillation's on how many PC's I can play on has crossed a threshold which many of US will not accept. The game stops feeling like property we own and feels like a rental/lease.
I unfortunately bought one game with this crap DRM on it(spore) and regret it. I cannot shake the feeling that they will shut down the activation servers like walmart is going to do and the game(s) that people have bought with this DRM will be screwed over. Some people have said that they(EA) will release a patch that will fix the DRM if they did that. I say, why would they? If they are bought out, go out of business, or just decide to shut them off, what incentive will they have to release a patch for this? None, that's how much.
This has nothing to do with stopping pirates, this is about stopping resales(which is illegal). They are starting with PC users because they are a smaller test group, but their goal is to get similar DRM set up in consoles so you cannot resale your console games.
will happen with EA's DRM games. It's not IF it will happen, It is WHEN it does. One day they will decide to shut down the activation servers because of either money or they go out of business. All the games people have bought will be useless if they ever want to reinstall them at a later date.
This is what EBAY wants. They want to get rid of the casual sellers(higher fees, forcing them to adopt one type of payment..etc) and only have commercial sales. They make way more money doing this. Of course this means that they are stabbing in the back, the seller base that made EBAY what it is. What we need is a NEW auction site to take away ebays crown.
1. You already bought it for one system, so why do you have to pay for it again just to play it on another system you own?
2. (related to 1). Updated game for PC version, It sucks to have bought a game for your console just to have them release an updated game with extra stuff(levels, quests, abilities, etc) for the PC later(fable, assassins creed, jade empire, etc).
The reason they will veto is is because:
"In a statement, the White House strongly objected to provisions of the bill that would send $4 billion in aid to communities hard-hit by foreclosures, faulted other spending plans and changes in how regulators oversee housing programs. "
It is NOT for an altruism motive.
Doesn't the oil companies have land NOW that they are not drilling? Why don't they drill those FIRST before they complain about drilling in other areas.
Spore is the ONLY game I am taking this crap for, and that is only because of how long I have been waiting for this game. Although I WILL pirate the bastard as soon as I get any flack about using up my limits or locks me out of the game. I was going to get bioshock from steam but, when I heard this DRM junk is on it I held off. I just do not see why EA does not follow steam's example. It is superior in every way to the horrible, horrible EA model. I will not buy any more EA crap that has this DRM on it.
Didn't they also say that they were only blocking p2p traffic at peak busy hours? Then they were caught doing it all the time? Action speaks louder than words.
The version of the book I would give out would have a chapter at the end of the book on what the US considers the No1 Terrorist, when they open up the chapter they would find a mirror showing the readers reflection.
1, not everybody has internet
2, there WILL be times when you want to play and you have no internet connection(like vacation)
3. What happens when EA shuts down the server for any reason? Say, EA goes bankrupt, now your game is completely useless.
4. More people are going to pirate the game now, hell the pirated version will probably be better.
5. People like ME who have had the game prordered for TWO FREAKING YEARS, are now going to get a refund for the game.
6. Hope nobody has any plans to upgrade, reinstall your OS after you install this or it will stop working thanks to the limited activations.
7. Its ads ANOTHER black eye to EA(EVIL ALWAYS), they just seem determined to piss on the customer fan base every chance they can.
I also want to emphasize the part that people are skipping over, besides the 10 day check you ALSO have only three activations you can use. So, if you install it more than three times, or upgrade/wipe your computer more than that the game WILL STOP WORKING.
Will the virtual machines allow direct hardware access? Especially in the video department? For those of us who play PC games or use video graphic intensive programs like maya, photoshop, etc, this is a very important question. Spending thousands of dollars on software/games for xp/vista and then not being able to use them in the new OS will turn MANY people off from upgrading.
Wow, this idea just killed video services like youtube, online tv, online multiplayer(PC,Xbox,Playstation, etc), downloading large updates for pc's or even downloading OS's(linux..etc), not to mention you will be charged for all the ads you receive on websites, Especially video and music ads. Sorry, this idea is just impractical on so many levels in todays internet.
The new telemarketers get around the do not call list by claiming they are taking surveys for products. I have been getting more and more calls for surveys lately for this or that product. I ask to be taken off the call list but they just say they are not telemarketers and ignore the request.
Prepare for HUGE problems with some older HP printers. When I updated to IE7, my HP software (HP director) for my all-in-one 1350 HP printer stopped working, it is a known issue with IE7 that HP has known about but has refused to release a real fix(updated installer). As long as you do not uninstall the software you can find fixes online, but if you uninstall it (like I did), you are screwed unless you do a rollback before IE7.
The best solution is virtual machines(which is what it looks like Microsoft is heading for). Totally recreate the OS from scratch and get rid of the slush of legacy support, people can just install a VM of their favorite OS.
I really love VM's, the only gripe is the no hardware sharing(video card access for games for example).
remember, this is a brand new technology and whenever something new comes out it is always expensive. The first cd burners, gig hard drives, latest video card..etc were in the thousands, you wait a few years and you can find the same technology in the bargain bin for 30 dollars.
Do you guarantee his business will be here in a couple of years? Do not put anything in where you have to contact somewhere to get a key/permission. If the company goes down and you have to reinstall the software, you are screwed.
So, assuming this is based on how much traffic a site gets, how much do you think a site like slashdot or digg will get charged? Probably so much that it would bankrupt them, it will be the same for everyone else who do not have deep pockets. This is just a legal way for corporations to go into collusion to kill off the small/independent web sites(think of RIAA and net radio for example). All those people who are against net neutrality will be singing a different tune when it takes you minutes instead of seconds to load your favorite sites because the website can't/wont pay the extortion fees.

Good point, this could be illegal since they are prohibiting the resale of said item.

Quick, everybody send the link to Chris Hansen's(to catch a predator) email address.
With what people do with RickRoll, I am scared what they will do with this.
Perhaps they are marching at the wrong place, start having a huge protest right in front of fox/abc/cnn...news stations...let them ignore THAT!

I currently have the ATT tilt phone with mobiepocket reader and it works fantastic. http://www.mobipocket.com/en/HomePage/default.asp?Language=EN
I see your point but as soon as the FCC gets a toe hold into cable in any form, expect your favorite cable shows to suddenly turn Disney on your ass.
Censorship? Perhaps this is their way to get the foot in the door so they can start censoring channels like hbo/showtime/cinemax...etc.
