  1. Violent video games don't kill people... on Video Games Share Blame in Florida Murder Case · · Score: 2, Insightful

People kill people. When is this going to get through to society at large. There are messed up people out there that can under no circumstances function normally or reason properly. Some people have skewed psychological problems. This doesn't make it right, but perhaps if the mother had paid some more attention to her son, she would have picked up on these problems. This is a classic case of bad parenting and the parent searching for someone else to place the blame on. I have no doubt in my mind that this poor girl's life could have been saved if this child was on the proper medication or under the right psychiatric care. Some people just can not function in society, this is why there are places for people like this. I'd like to see someone tell me that I'm X times more likely to commit a crime because I played Doom when I was young.

While it remains to be seen if gameplay will be significantly different, it will be significantly better. The new engine is nothing less than stellar, the in-game physics are just amazing, as are it's rendering abilities. Everything looks incredibly smooth and as more and more graphical technology comes out it will be increasingly hard to tell if you're looking at a FMV cut scene or something the engine is rendering. Counter Strike thrives because it's playable and because it's relatively realistic. It doesn't take place in space, nor do your enemies look like demonic creatures, the added realism will make the game that much better. Not to mention the materials aspect of the engine could make it possible to kill your opposition by actually taking out physical structures. I can only imagine the full possibilities until I see some mods in action, but so far I'm immensly impressed. What would be great to see in the next one would be much more realism in completing goals. Perhaps instead of pretending to plant a bomb and waiting a few seconds you could actually plant the bomb, run away and watch something actually get destroyed...now that would be cool. I for one can't wait to see how it comes out and the full capabilities of the hl2 engine.

I can't believe this mentions that torrents are hard to find. Here's how you find torrents.

Pull up google, type in something like this:
    "what you're looking for" +bittorrent +download

You should have a list of sites that have links to that torrent. Or, you can read a site that keeps track of torrents and uses trackers. My personal favorite is torrentse.cx, but suprnova.org isn't too bad either. Sure these sites have illegitimate stuff on them, but there's also useful and legal files on there from time to time if that's a concern of yours. Problem is there's far too many people that just close the window after it's finished to "conserve bandwidth." Bittorrent doesn't work if you don't leave that damn window open, you can however set maximum upload rate from the command line, which I highly recommend using if you're on a connection that must be monitored.

Bittorrent is great, the more people using it at any given time makes it even better. Just make sure you read the documentation so you fully understand how it works and that it may take a while to start to download.

If this brings light to a "new genre" of games, how many more will we see? Is this a viable way to market porn? Probably not, strange melde of "having a plot in video games is like having a plot in porno" -Carmack in his early years. The sims didn't really have a plot or anything, but it kind of had a point to it. I can't quite see this catching on and being marketed in your local {insert chain store here}, but it would certainly be different.

I think that games.slashdot.org is doing an excellent job so far. It's providing a service for a group that's actually interested in gaming news. Perhaps it's not the best, but you've gotta admit that browsing gaming headlines off of games.slashdot.org is a lot easier than sifting through all the ads on gamespot, gamespy, and ign. Like it or not, it's a lot easier to read under 30 comments by people who, for the most part, have something useful to say, and the experience to back it up. I hope more readers do submit articles, but you can't say those who aren't registered have given false information, who care's who's submitting it so long as it gets here. Quit whining.

Mod me as you will, but give them a break, no one is forcing you to read the site.

Civilization III: ...It's a good strategy game, and it panders to your megalomaniacal instinct. Plus, it requires careful strategizing, so your brain won't turn to complete mush.

I'd agree with you, but for potentially older hardware, and not that civ3 is resource intensive, but I always had more fun with civ2. It's even got a convenient drop-down cheat menu. Civ3 is fun, but civ2 had quicker game play and an easier interface. I wasn't impressed with the changes (or lack thereof) between civ2 and 3, so if you can find it laying around for 10 bucks, pick it up...it's a great cheap game.

Also check out Unreal Tournament, Half Life, maybe Quake 3, Warcraft (2 or 3), and if you're a D&D fan and if your PC can handle it, Neverwinter Nights (always seems to tax my system for no reason) is fairly entertaining.

Of course if you like the classics, (and assuming it's legal for you wink wink) download some roms and emulators and have fun with those. There's plenty of NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. roms and emulators out there. It's amazing how much easier it is to get my computer to run some old NES games that the console refuses to play anymore. Oh how I long for the days of "The Legend of Zelda," (the original you fools!) shiny gold cartridge and all...

But as others have pointed out, it harms free services, mailing lists, etc. Not to mention that it's hard as hell to track spammers already, they do a decent job of covering their tracks, I have a feeling if they didn't some crazy would send them a bomb in the mail. Aside from that, what do you consider as a person when determining the tax. Is it per email account? If so, spammers could get around that really easily, and many people I know have more than two email addresses. Is it through an individual ISP? I hope not, that elminates free services, or sends them all the spam, stressing the free services' servers. It would also mean college students (myself included) would probably see a hike, even if it's small, in tuition to cover the email tax. Even then, what's to prevent someone on a fast college network from sending bulk mailings from their dorm? Does this mean we'll need to give our social security number when signing up for an email account? Is this yet another bad idea? I certainly think so.

  10. There's a few... on What Games Have Actually Affected You? · · Score: 1

The first game that ever "changed" me was Sid Meier's Civilization. That was the game that blew all others away, games used to be side scrolling shooters like the early Duke Nukem games (don't get me wrong, those kicked ass), but Civilization had depth, it had endless possibility, it had horrible graphics...it was great! That was of course, until I started playing Doom hardcore. Doom changed that world of endless possibility because it actually put me in a "realistic" world that I could explore and pitted me in a fight for your life kind of situation that had an inexplicable draw. Doom was of course all well and good until Quake came out. Quake added yet another dimension to gameplay, I could jump in the game, not only that, but the maps were so much more complex and each episode had a distinctly different feel to it that Doom just didn't have. It was all downhill from there for me. Multiplayer had me playing for hours on end, in a local museum that had a computer lab with a lan no less, and then at that moment in time, I decided that's what I wanted to do with my life. Quake made me decide to major in Computer Science, got me started on Linux, got me interested in networking and security, and made me really look at how things were designed and structured. I even took an internship at an architecture firm to learn about designing structures, and indeed, learned a lot. Quake quite literally changed my life, it's made me what I am today.
