Reminds me of the following Onion headline (article not available to cheapskates):
Anti-Racism Laws Mutate Racism Into Newer, Stronger Form "In a similar manner," the report continued, "the hiring quotas established by well-intentioned affirmative-action programs over the last three decades may be functioning as a carrier of the disease [racism], providing a pseudo-moral justification for privately held racist beliefs by creating an atmosphere of perceived 'unfairness' and thus breeding even greater super-racist infestations."
I read the first two chapters or so of that book. It's totally an essay strrrreeeetched into a book. Terribly boring (in a lite-on-content sort of way).
On the topic of taking recommendations from Slashdot: A poster raved about "The Non-Designers Design Book," so I bought it. It's not completely worthless for total amateurs (like me), but it's pretty much written for the purpose of teaching secretaries how to make better-looking newsletters. Lesson learned.
Concerning suing users...if someone were to make something like Freenet, only without encryption, would the plausible deniability thing still work? For example, if Soulseek automatically downloaded a Britney Spears song onto my harddrive, then uploaded it to someone else. I'm not really the "true source" of the file, right? Whatever. Discuss!
Using Avisynth for editing is pretty much like programming. Especially if, god forbid, you should want to use a loop. Avisynth doesn't support loops, just recursive functions. There is also some sort of plug-in architecture. Best effect plug-in competition?
Also, using POVRay is...not at all like programming, but it's pretty technical-ish. 3d animation competition?
Edited video with special effects and 3d animation competition? The sky's the limit!
(I vote for the video game AI bot face-off thing. Non-coder game-players could play a significant role in coming up with their team's bot's strategy.)
When I click on an article link at drudgereport.com I'll get one sometimes (right before the main window goes to the article). It's not happening right now, though. Maybe once per day?
5. Can't schedule "overlapping" recordings on same channel. MTV2 airs Beavis & Butthead reruns two at a time. B&B ends about two minutes past the half-hour. If I tell it to record 2 minutes past the end of the show, it won't record the second one 'cause the first one spills over into the second one. Therefore, (since I don't tell it to record two minutes past the show) I miss the last two minutes of the second episode (and only catch the last two minutes of the first episode on the second recording).
6. 15 minute shows are not handled properly. On the guide, Aqua Teen Hunger Force takes up a whole 30 minute slot, but if I set it to record it'll only record the first 15 minutes. I had to create a manual recording to get Sealab. (BTW, who wants to worship Alvis with me?)
7. One time it erased all my stuff (except for the one thing that I had marked "keep until manually erased"). So now I feel compelled to set everything I care about to "Keep Until Manually Erased." My nachos supreme loses heat while I do this.
A lot of students are just trying to get churned out into a job, they're not interested in contributing to the field.
I for one would love to contribute to my field and do research and do all that fun, interesting academic stuff. But who will feed and shelter me while I do it? Unless you have generous parents or are willing to work full-time while going to school, how can you even manage to get a master's degree? I know, like you said, lots of students aren't really interested, but maybe they would be if serious, long-term studying didn't involve frightening financial hardships.
It would probably be a good idea for Mormon leaders to try to prevent this.
The following isn't terribly relevant, but...on the topic of guarding yourself against con-men, Nietzsche had something to say:
I sit at the gateway for every rogue, and ask: Who wisheth to
deceive me?
This is my first manly prudence, that I allow myself to be deceived,
so as not to be on my guard against deceivers.
Ah, if I were on my guard against man, how could man be an anchor to
my ball! Too easily would I be pulled upwards and away!
This providence is over my fate, that I have to be without
foresight.
And he who would not languish amongst men, must learn to drink out
of all glasses; and he who would keep clean amongst men, must know how
to wash himself even with dirty water.
And thus spake I often to myself for consolation: "Courage! Cheer
up! old heart! An unhappiness hath failed to befall thee: enjoy that
as thy- happiness!"

I swear. I spent 30 minutes accomplishing this feat. It is my belief that 593.5 is the highest possible score and that 148.5 is the lowest possible score. It is God's will.
> I bet a little chip in the elevator says "Oh my, he pressed the button twice, I better get going!"
It certainly could. Pressing a button multiple times should have the same effect as pressing the "door close" button...in a world where the door actually closes on command. Someday some kind elevator programmer will reward me for all my button-pushing.
We have them in Columbus. I know of at least one in the middle of downtown (Spring St? It's four lanes and one way). If I recall, there's a big "Cross Walk" sign hanging above it, but you still never know when some idiot's going to start walking across.
Unable to Match You at This Time
eHarmony is based upon a complex matching system developed through extensive testing of married individuals. One of the requirements for it to work successfully is for participants to fall into our rigorously defined profiles. If we aren't able to match a user well using these profiles, the most considerate approach is to inform them early in the process. ...
Unfortunately, we are not able to make our profiles work for you. Our matching system is not suitable for about 20% of potential users, so 1 in 5 people simply would not benefit from our service. We hope that you understand that we regret our inability to provide service for you at this time.
I have a feeling that not fitting into one of their "rigorously defined profiles" says something about me. People like me don't get married? The Icy Loner profile isn't worth rigorously defining? C'mon eHarmony, say what you mean.
>stop what you're doing right now. Go download Firefox...
I am not the parent poster, but I took your FF advice. Here is my critique (after 10 mins. of use):
Good
Looks nice! Not hideous like every other Mozilla I've used.
Good default toolbar setup. Very similar to my IE settings.
Tabbed browsing.
Options are more user friendly.
Bookmark manager
Bad
Doesn't run PopUpCop (IE plugin). I use PopUpCop to turn off/on GIF animation and Flash auto-start.
Smooth scrolling off by default.
Smooth scrolling slow.
The page I'm looking at right now (/. posting thing) looks a little off.
The first thing on my "bad" list may be a deal-breaker, as I can't stand animations next to the text I'm trying to read. Anyway, nice to see Mozilla is finally, genuinely nice. Thanks for the tip.
My 1990 Pontiac Sunbird has a leaky sunroof. I can't decide what my favorite thing about that is:
* That is dumps water on the top of my head while I'm trying to drive.
* Dumps water on my lap so it looks like I peed my pants.
* When the resulting moisture inside the car ends up on the inside of the windshield. Then freezes. Then when I scrape it off it's like it snowed in my car.
Him who now turneth sick, the evil overtaketh which is now the evil:
he seeketh to cause pain with that which causeth him pain. But there
have been other ages, and another evil and good.
Once was doubt evil, and the will to Self. Then the invalid became a
heretic or sorcerer; as heretic or sorcerer he suffered, and sought to
cause suffering.
Best practices == "your rules"? An "or else" clause? US corporations controlling Chinese people? Best practice is just the best technique/approach that anyone has come up with, flawed or not.
Best Practices
The processes, practices, or systems identified in public and private organizations that performed exceptionally well and are widely recognized as improving a organization's performance and efficiency in specific areas. Successfully identifying and applying best practices can reduce business expenses and improve organizational efficiency.
I doubt a billion Chinese people being notified of a hole at the same moment Microsoft is notified is best practice.

You obviously don't go to the place I go. By "several," do you mean about 1 percent of the otherwise obviously-broke donor population?
mentioning they did this twice a week because it is a good break from the stress of life and it helps people. They don't need the money, they need time when they can't be interupted.
I find this hard to believe. Per chance, did these "businessmen" in "suits" ask you for spare change soon after? Maybe your place is different, but where I go it can easily take three hours (not counting the driving there and back), and most of that time is spent sitting in a lousy waiting room. I can't imagine anyone with a full-time job, friends, maybe a wife, maybe kids choosing that over any other activity. Not to mention, that unlike other people-helping activities it doesn't require selflessness. If you don't do it, somebody who needs the $20 will. (Not saying you're lying...but I'd have to see it to believe it.)
Yeah, I'm sure they're all at OpenCourseWare catching up on their chemistry. Surely they're not just posting to/. and reading blogs. They're homeless/poor, they're not typical scumbags. They're noble. They sit on the public computer all day bettering themselves.
My point was that they should set aside a few 5-minute-max PCs (or even just make the place a wireless hotspot or whatever) for people who just want to access the friggin' Internet for a few minutes and can't wait around all day.
I'm 22 / student (always broke!) / never married. Women jumping ship or being cruel bitches during hard times is a well known phenomenon. If I were married and my wife treated me like crap every time something bad happened I wouldn't blame myself.
