    I flipped through the Serentity RPG, the game mechanics seemed to leave a little to be desired. I wonder how much play testing games like this get?

    MMMmm yes. The Mac using police department. Although when Dexter hacked into Masuka's email he did it the sane way, by actually sitting at the guy's computer.

    Mongrel does the ruby equivalent of "dropping down to assembly for the speed critical parts". This makes a difference for some people. For instance it means you need a C compiler or pre-compiled binary for your architechture to install mongrel. This is in contrast to a "pure" ruby lib in which all the lib's source files are in ruby.

    Um no it doesn't. Not in Tiger anyway. It stores your email in a priority format (.emlx) with one folder per mailbox, and one file per mail. It vaguely resembles Maildir.

    You're playing multiple characters. not one, so you can't have a chase camera (nor do I see why you'd want one, since that wouldn't give a D&D feel at all). Yes, controlling multiple characters definitely has more of a D&D feel than a chase camera. Makes perfect sense. Well I gotta go get my 5 character sheets for my tabletop D&D session.     They should hopefully have a tough time succeeding at it. The Wii (along with the DS) has a CYA notice every time you turn it on. Also Wii sports told us to take a break yesterday.

    Also why is Mary Shelley on there? She wrote a book that has a "robot" in it? Wow she's really geeky... isn't she?

    Ah yes, being one of the pioneers of science fiction gives her no right to be considered a geek.

    That's not what the code does though. cout i is like printf("%d", i). The only "portability problems" with the GGP post's code sample might be character encoding issues.

    Let me guess all your getters and setters did was set and get an instance var. What are the odds that the compiler, knowing you were using a getter/setter, and knowing that it didn't actually do anything, optimized away the function call overhead (that it couldn't optimize with your informal getters and setters)? Nope that can't be it, it must be that C# functions are extra-slow.

    Perl is the gateway drug to ruby. Ruby is the gateway drug from perl (regexps, $_, etc.) to smalltalk. That's my theory anyway. It's all part of an intricate plot started by the Ancient Illuminated Seers of Smalltalk to make Smalltalk the one true programming language. This is why to be safe, I only program in K&R-style C.
