I would dissagree with this point. The most 'hardcore' Gamers I know are pc gamers who spend from 100 - 300 euro on just graphic's cards so they can play the latest and greatest fps or whatever.

While not everybody who own's a pc is serious gamer thoese who are generally spend quite a considerable amount on there setup and quite often buy a second pc or upgrade there old pc to play multi player games.

I do not like the console gaming experience all that much , I think fps's on consoles especially are shit ,(golden eye being an exception), and generally if I am playing anything on a console It would either be a fighting game like teken or a rpg of some sort.Consoles are cheap and easy to use ,(relative to a gaming pc),the majority of people who own a conole however are not 'Hardcore Gamers'
but rather casual gamers who want short bouts of entertainment without any setup hassel.

Pc gamers are willing to put alot more effert into there gaming experience,(Downloading drivers fiddeling with patches),many pc gamers own multiple pc's and many more drag there systems long distances to friends houses for lan party's. In my opinion pc gamers are more hardcore.

This whole what you can and can not do with a movie or a piece of music you buy situation has gone to far already and I know that we are not half way down the proverbial road yet.

This whole conflict over copying cds and the like comes from the fact that Copyright and freedom of speech can no longer exist side by side within the internet in it's current form. Some thing has got to give in this struggle either law or technology.

Law's will be passed and there effectiveness will be judged by there inforcability , p2p networks will evolve and so will the music industry's tactic's to destroy them but at the end of the day whatever any one says or thinks some one is going to suffer and that person is you and me.

What we need is decent broadband at an affordable price ,until that happens the record industry will be able to hang on to its crappy business model cause no dial up 56k userbase p2p network will be able to evolve to the same standard of audiogalaxy for example.

I dought what the riaa are trying to do now will be effective at stopping people sharing music or in incouraging people to buy there artists music. It has been said before but I will say it again
the main aim of this 'war on music sharing' is one of control ,the music industry wishes to control the manner in which new music is presented to us and thus where bands have to go if they wish to make it big, the sharing of music over the interenet undermines this position .

The only way I could see the music industry having any further success in this war would be for them to become more intergrated into isps and at an isp level blacklist people who trade music , aol/time warner would be one group in a perfect position to do this.If all the major labels started buying into isps and trowing people of for trading music and then placing these people on a black list which would ban them collectively from all riaa assossiated isps as well as harrassing all non riaa isps for allowing pirates on there service , mabey then they might see a decrease in music sharing, but then again would any of this really benifit them in the long run or would it just really piss off lots of people and cost them alot of money and customers
    ?

  12. tapes to cd's on Music Industry Staggers While Film Industry Blooms · · Score: 1

I hate listening to music on tapes because it takes time to get to the tracks I want. I like cds because they allow me to skip songs quickly and get where I want to go on the cd.

It could be said that the reason why most people like dvds over video tapes is the same reason why most people prefer cds to tapes .I can see why a person would want to skip alot of tracks on a cd but why would a person constantly want to do the same thing with a movie ?Ok I can understand fast forwarding adds and such , but apart from that don't most people just watch a movie from start to finish 99% of the time?

Clearly dvd's are alot more convienient than video tapes and this coupled with a reasonable price is why people buy them.

The music Industrys problem is that all of the new formats they plan to offer the public allow the public to do less than cds allow the public to do now and that the public in general are perfectly happy to listen to 128kps mp3s and consider the quality of the afore mentioned mp3s to be acceptable and hence do not really care all that much for the super dooper quality that the music industrys ultra copy protected new formats offer.Basicly dvds offer me usefull features that video tapes do not have at a reasonable price,All the proposed copyprotected music formats offer me is a pian in the ass.

When I first saw the ati all in wonder pro ,(before the first aiw review was posted on slashdot ),I had little prior experience with ati and thought that for the money this could well be the card for me .

The features which I found attractive were that :

*It seemed to be a decent enough gaming card.

*It had the ability to capture tv and video,(at what one would presume would be decent quality for the price ),

    *It had a cool remote

*The promise of open drivers appealed to me due to the current selection of os's I am running.

Now before purchasing I decided to do a little research to see if the card would live up to my expectations ,The answer was that the card did not and Now I will explain why not.

I looked at many ,many reviews of this card and All of the reviews I looked at were done under windows , the reason for this was , to put it bluntly ,that the linux drivers for the card are crap. They do not work correctly and are by all reports extremely inconsistant ,(some things work some things dont ,cause crashes ,not good preformance etc),However from what I could discern the foundations were there I could still use some of the cards features under linux and as I am obliged to run win2k I could still use all of the cards features under windows.

However under further investigation It turned out that the windows drivers and the windows software by all reports was also shit.It was at that point that I decided to not buy ati and take my cash elsewhere .

I am still in the market for a capture card and a decent 3d card for gaming which wont break the bank, as it is I am quite busy so this is not the biggest problem for me right now so I am willing to wait , but when it comes time for me to buy in a months time I can not see ati's aiw drivers for windows or linux being much better and hence I will have to shop elsewhere.

Also I would like to point out that alot of isp's advertisement's are misleading and give the impression that they are offering unlimited bandwith when actualy they are not, I say this as there seem's to be alot of angry comment's here giving out about people who are heavy bandwith users and these people do not seem to take into account that alot of the time isp's can be misleading in the way they advertise there service, at the end of the day if you sell your service as unlimited it should be unlimited, if it is not , then do not advertise or mislead people into thinking that it is, personaly I think people should get what they payed for and not have there account's frozen because they did not read the fine print.

This sort of employee informer culture idea has some interesting implication's , for both boss and staff.

If the staff install the warez without the knoweledge of the boss is the boss liable?
Does the boss really know what the staff are downloading or are using the office cd copier to copy ,in short how clued in are bosses about warez these days ?

This whole attitude of informing on your company
primarily targets people who are not on the best term's with there company, these people In my mind could be very likely candidates,(if they were given notice that they were to be laid off), to go into the office and download/install a fair old bit of warez,(perhaps using some one elses password), and report there company, especially if they were earning a bit of money in the process

The main thing's I can see this realy doing is making bosses alot more paranoid about what there staff are doing and generating alot more legal desputes over liability ,(i.e who installed what and why ).
