  5. Capability vs Culpability on The Next Generation · · Score: 1

The article does a pretty good job of emphasizing the point that technology has changed our lives dramatically, and will continue to do so at a continuously accelerating pace. The article fails to address the ethical and moral dilemmas that will surely accompany the technologies that develop. While I'm by no means a particularly religious person, I can't help but think that people will be touched by the moral and ethical issues surrounding upcoming technologies long before the technologies are available. Consider the issue of human cloning, which has yet to be achieved and is frequently discussed on moral and ethical grounds. Genetic enhancements in sports are already being discussed even though the most pessimistic forecasts don't believe it will be an issue until at least 2008. Anyone who wants to address the issues of life-changing technologies in an article such as this ought to at least address the topic culturally as well as technically.

  8. The age old question on Viruses: More Hype than Danger? · · Score: 1

We know that in the current environment, viruses aren't really all that damaging. Every time a new virus comes along, experts warn everyone that it is the most potentially destructive one ever, and blah blah blah. Then the virus never seems to catch on, the effects are minor, and all is quiet until the next major 'scare'.

The question is, are the experts overhyping the potential dangers, or are the dangers reduced as a result of their making the public aware of the virus and its potential for harm?

  9. Lucas trying desparately to save face on Attack of the Clones: Less Plastic Crap, More Story? · · Score: 1, Redundant

Spoiler footage will be aired on FOX during a showing of Empire Strikes Back this week (Thurs night).

Rumor has it that at least one person was shown Ep 2 (an early version) at the SXSW film festival in Austin a month ago (see earlier /. story).

Lucas is clearly trying hard to atone for his mistakes, but the real issue is whether AotC sucks as bad as tPM. I believe the hype machine will be successful in generating a ton of ticket sales on opening weekend. The question is whether fans will go again and again because the movie recaptures the magic of the original trilogy.

  10. not really on Transforming Orbit Into A Wasteland · · Score: 4, Insightful

"The author of the reporter alleges that programs like Star Wars and the like would basically turn LEO into a 'wasteland' for satellites for decades or even centuries."

The article actually said that if other countries responded to programs like Star Wars by dumping tiny bits of space junk (gravel, marbles, or the like) to destroy satelites, causeing more space junk and destroying more satelites, etc, etc then the result would be a LEO wasteland. Putting a satellite in orbit doesn't necessarily increase space debris. Attacking satellites in orbit, on the other hand, does.
