  1. This proves one thing... on California Grills Diebold Over E-Voting Foul-Ups · · Score: 1

This proves what we knew all along: that the worst programmers in the world are in California and India. In Florida we have great programmers, but we can't get the damn printed ballots straightened out.

  2. However... on New Internet Speed Record · · Score: 4, Funny

  3. In a related story... on Projectionists Using Night Vision Goggles in Theaters · · Score: 1

In the same theatre, during showing of "Home on the Range", Sally Rhodes, 9, was arrested when the night vision goggles revealed she was eating the Easter marshmallow favorite, "Peeps", clearly violating the theatres "NO OUTSIDE FOOD" rule.
Also in the same theatre, during a showing of "Walking Tall", the goggles revealed Jenny Fredericks, 14, seated in the very back of the auditorium performing fellatio on her boyfriend, Jason Isaccs, 15. Both were arrested and charged with several felony counts.

See how this can be a slippery slope?

  4. Think of how it will effect HD on Congress To Force Cable a la Carte Plans · · Score: 3, Informative

I only want the HD channels but Brighthouse required me to subscribe to the full digital package at $99/mo so I can get their 6 HD channels(ABC, CBS, FOX, PBS, NBC, Disc). It's another $4/mo a la carte for HDNet (2) and INHD(2), which show sports and cool concerts. Plus for me to get HBO in HD (Sopranos), I have to subscribe to the whole HBO/Showtime package which is like 15 more channels for another $20, and I watch only one of them. Give me those 12 HD channels for $3 each per mo ($36)and I'll gladly pay it. It would save me $100/mo. If people could get only the HD channels a la carte, I think they would.

  7. dubious hole? on Leave a Safe IT Job for Music Tour? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I won't go into the many reasons why you should do it because several other have already. However I disagree that it's a dubious hole in your resume. I work in IT and everyone here knew I was in a band. We toured twice taking a week each time, and my boss knew where I was going and what I was doing. They thought it was cool. Also when you come back, put it on your resume. You can leverage it to mean that you work well with a team, you are extremely creative, and you enjoy travel. You can also mention that you prefer work that you enjoy and that's why you followed your dream. Any manager would then say "..and you want to work here?!" They'll be flattered you want to work for their company after living the life of a "rock star".

  15. -indows on Lindows becomes Lindash · · Score: 2, Interesting

I emailed Micheal Robertson several months ago and asked why he is using the -indows in his company name. I flat out told him that even though it is definitely a Linux distro, using the -indows associates his product with insecure, unreliable, expensive, proprietary software. And so I asked "What's the point of using the L- if the rest is -indows?". Obviously his whole point of Lindows is create an OS clearly distinguishable from Microsoft software (and the negative connotation). It would make much more sense to come up with a nice prefix for -nix. Of course he said something about how windows is a generic term and he should be able to use however he wants. I can't find the exact email anymore. He's so hung up on if he "could" that he doesn't consider if he "should".

  17. Panasonic makes nice units on Portable CD-R/RW/MP3 Player? · · Score: 1

The The Panasonic model will let you skip by directories or tracks when you are listening to an MP3 CD-R. I got it at Sears, and so far it has worked well. You can also change the display to show the track title, filename, or directory name while the song is playing. Mine is the SL-MP35 but the MP70 is the newer version of it.

  18. What's the benefit of this? on The Simpsons Movie · · Score: 1

What could they possibly put in a movie that I can't see for free on TV? The truth is that movies based on TV shows do usually suck. The X-files movie was cool, but really it was just a long episode that probably could have aired on TV. Wouldn't a Simpsons movie just be like one long episode? Maybe it will be live action-like the Flintstones movie-which is a good example of how bad it COULD be. John Goodman as Homer Simpson...Doh!

  20. Cable for me on Cable TV Versus Satellite TV? · · Score: 1

I was in the same situation. I just moved also. Two reasons why I stick with cable (Brighthouse/TWC):
    1. No phone line.
I did not get a local phone line because my wife and I were able to get two cellphone lines for less money. Local phone is $50 per month here in Florida. Dish requires phone(at least thats what the website says). I use an RR cable modem anyway, not DSL.
    2. Rent the hardware. Don't have to buy it.
In my house I lease a DVR box and a HD box from Brighthouse. $8 per month per box ($96 per year, per box). Satellite would require that I purchase a HD receiver($300) and a TIVO($200) which a lot of money to drop, plus they likely will be obsolete in a year. If my leased box goes obsolete, or breaks, I just ask, and get it replaced for no extra charge.
It was a no brainer, especially since the cost of the programming tiers are essentially the same, offering the same channels in the same digital quality. As my coworker pointed out, however, DirecTV does offer the NFL Network and has an exclusive deal to offer NFL Sunday Ticket. But this is slashdot, so who cares about football here anyway?
