Better than that - the PAL Version is simply fscked up
It's been almost a year since the Japanese release and they were too incompetent to increase the vertical resolution from 480 (NTSC) to 576 (PAL) therefore all characters look as if their character class was sumo wrestler
And -who would have guessed it- there will be no 60Hz mode.
As it seems Square doesn't give a shit about Europe.
Ok, perhaps they can't sell as many games here as in Japan or in the US but I certainly don't have to like that attitude and there are enough other excellent RPGs for PS2
One of the main points in every review about mplayer is that it's GUI is a major PITA - but... I don't need it
The file navigation with keys is faster and better than every graphical client I ever tried. In addition - I start video-files usually via Konqueror and the startup time of mplayer is better than the one of its competitors as it doesn't need to load the graphical client. So why would I want to compile MPlayer with GUI?
Sun's GNOME Usability Test made that point, and KDE's panels are similar enough to GNOMEs that I assumed the comparison was fair.
Almost every problem they reported was GNOME-only. Perhaps they'd found other things when testing KDE but from my own experience with friends KDE is more newbie-friendly
In addition they sat Mac and Windows users in front of GNOME Systems and the issues were more or less my-other-system-behaves-different stuff and would have been there too if they tested OS X with Windows and GNOME-users
About the homo sapiens neanderthalensis - They were *not* our ancestors, they were a competing species which seperated from "our" line of evolution about 500 000 years ago. The Neanderthals were wiped out about 30000 years ago (I think, I'm not sure about the date) why they were inferior to the modern humans is afaik still unclear - homo sapiens neanderthalensis and homo sapiens sapiens were not genetically compatible, means they could not have offsprings. Aboriginies on the other hand are homo sapiens sapiens and were only isolated for about 40 000 years
" If IE's Windows integration is a monopoly, then I'm all for the removal of Konqueror from KDE."
1. You're comparing the wrong progs here, Konqueror has far more functions than *Internet* Explorer - we should talk about removing khtml from KDE
2. The integration is no monopoly - it is *abuse* of a monopoly (OS) to get another in a different sector (Browser) - Last time I checked KDE neither had a monopoly nor was using it for illegal practices
Of course they're sueing where their chances are best (At least they're a German company and it's about a page in German so Germany was more or less an obvious choice; it'd get a little surreal if they'd done it in China or something like that)
But it's sad to see how legislation of your own country becomes worthless as someone who wants to sue you will always find an excuse to do it in some country which suits him better. You can't any longer rely on the fact that you have not broken local laws and, if you are unlucky, your next trip abroad could get really nasty (Sklyarov anyone?)
1. Sony is not Netscape; in fact their revenues are twice as high as Microsoft's 2. Sony is not IBM; not like IBM with OS/2 they won't back out the console market but fight with all they got
Therefore I still have hope that m$ will get themselves a bloody nose and I won't have to see a BSOD on my TV
...and removal of needlessly jargon filled alerts can do much to simplify a UI.
yeah, I'm sure Linux would be better with Windows' clear and easy to read "your system f*cked up and we don't know why" errors.
I use XP atm and I have to say that Mandrake isn't that far off, the chances that you get through installation with as much troubles as with XP are quite good and if something doesn't work at least you can do it by hand/ask someone who can.
perhaps Mdk hasn't reached the point where my grandma can install Linux but I think a significant amount of people out there should be able to install and use Mdk and perhaps even prefer it to XP, but we're stuck with the old problem:
Noone is using it => no 3rd-party software => noone uses it
Ok where to begin (all AFAIK): 1. They still haven't got it that DivXNetworks didn't create DivX - they just grabbed the name to bring out DivX4 which has nothing to do with DivX;-) (the beginning of DivX as a codec a hacked m$ one). 2. The part of Fraunhofer which licensed DivX (Fraunhofer IGD) has nearly nothing to do with the one developing mp3 (Fraunhofer IIS) - Fraunhofer is a vast organization with over 50 different institutes 3. DivX was licensed by Fraunhofer IGD months ago for "streaming technologies and software development within research activities" (http://www.igd.fhg.de/actual_divx.html) There was already a big discussion on/. then. 4. http://www.divx.com tells us that one of the goals for the future of the DivX-codec is to implement DRM - they do this for months, too.
Now, what's the "news" remaining in that article? Oh yeah, Fraunhofer wants to use the DRM part of DivX too. Wouldn't have thought they want to use that in streaming solutions. Now that was informative!
Modern Saudi Arabia wouldn't exist without the US sticking its nose very far into the Middle East. The regime is propped up with US aid and oil money
Even better than that is the main reason *why* it gets all the money:
First the US supported an oppressive regime in Iran, after the revolution they supported an oppressive regime in Irak to get rid of the one in Teheran.
When Saddam realized that Kuweit was a much more tempting target than the Iran the US've found a new oppressive regime they could support to get rid of the one in Baghdad: Saudi Arabia - I wonder which's next
The reason they hate the West is because the West, for all its trash culture, is a free culture, and their model of rule is a contradiction of freedom.
That definitely *is* a reason, but there's also the problem that the US are no congregation of saints.
They never had any problems to throw all moral considerations over board and ally with mass murders, using military force or ignoring the UN if there was the slightest prospect of an advantage for America.
Of course it is the legitimate right for all nations to strive for the well-being of its citizens but if you do this without regard for the rest of the world you don't have to be surprised if you're not really loved by them.
It is not my intention to justify terrorism, absolutely not. To dislike someone is no reason to bomb civilians.
So, silly plots, no cohesive threads, flat acting and lots of sexual titillation?
I can't help it but that sounds just like Star Trek TOS
I admit that you're right for at least two thirds of the new shows but the ratio wasn't better 30yrs ago only that we have different standards for shows then and now.
Yeah, I notice that every time I wait 2 seconds for the desktop-switch cause all that eye-candy is simply too much for my box
Those who consider lowering the level of sfx an option simply haven't understood the point of using e16 =)

Nah, then you always had to choose between vi-mode and kvim to demonstrate vi users their inferiority (scnr - no flames please =)
WinXP for XEmacs, on the other hand, could be a great way to piss off Gnu/RMS
starting emacs-21.1 .....done .....

Are we so arrogant as to think that the world will always look exactly as it is? Nothing is forever. Not even Los Angeles.
You're right, nothing is forever but many, many people would prefer that no raising of sea levels takes place for the time being.

XviD is based on the old OpenDivX-Codec but afaik doesn't use any of its code any longer and is completely GPled.
the codec improves at an amazing speed and already beats the shit out of VP3:

This is *not* correct; a faq about i-mode can be found here:

In a nutshell it's a system for mobile internet
sounds quite interesting but my bank thinks otherwise

Oh you don't have to go back to the Romans - other great examples of actual use of this tactic since then would be Hitler and Stalin for example.
All of them had to realize that it won't work this way
Thank God that you're just a stupid moron on /. and not someone with the power to really do what you propagate
