I don't how many will agree but I'd never buy a TabletPC if I had other options. What I like about laptops is that when it's closed, the LCD screen is protected. Whether it's coding or writing a novel keyboard is still the way to go. TabletPC is a Microsoft marketing strategy, but to me it's in beta stage as the technology such as handwriting a voice recognition is simply not ready yet, it works sometimes but not good enough for production environment.
If I were you, I'd talk to the finance guys so that they just give you the money and you bring them the bills. I'd invest in books and a nice computer farm at home (in fact I have it already), one fast computer for home entertainment + sometimes a server, a slower and cheap computer for serve, sometimes client and a laptop and you can emulate any environment on these 3 computers (plus you can run vmvare or similar and have even more computers) for instance install asterisk on the cheap server and have fun at home. And after you're done you can either sell the computers or have them for your own entertainment.
I totally support this opinion. Open source IRC daemon running on open source OS. An invite only channel, with key, now where does CIA plan to step in? And it's obvious no valuable information will be exchanged via popular IMs. I once though it would, as there is so much traffic, that no one is able to comprehend it, bu as soon as I wanted to relay sth valuable, let's say a password or whatever, delicious cookie recipe, I used secure channels. Now why would they want to spy on 14 year olds, I don't know. How can they differntate what's real, I remeber that somwhere out there there is this Echelon system working, recording all my phone call and checking for 'special' words. I try to use 'nuke', 'osama', 'chemical weapons' in few languages, but the black suits still refuse to come.
In general I'm not so paranoid, I don't think that we're facing Orwellian times. The main reason for that, there are not enough human resources to have it working. Let's say we wanted every person in the world to be spied on by another person, the way it is done now, is in shifts, at least two people involved, usually much more. Now technology helps with this problem, let's say we can record every minute of a man's life, there still has to be someone to watch all that footage, if we go on, we could probably end up with only half of the population in the BigBrother business, I think with current economy it is not possible. I could elaborate on this subject a bit more, but I hope you get my point.
As long as Windows keeps being shipped with IE onboard, there will be a huge market share of IE. The great thing is that on *nix boxes IE share is 0%. Personally I am aware of the threats associated with using IE, I still use it everyday, mainly because of my bank webpage not working properly with Firefox. I never got any spyware nor had any problems what so ever. I also like to stick with what's default, it's a nuisance to install Firefox every time I install windows if there's a working browser ready. Also when I'm using some other computer somewhere chances that there will be a firefox installed already are slim to none. I won't install firefox just to perform one task. So the reality is that as long as Windows rules, so will IE. It is unfair competition IMHO.
Too bad all the nations can't get into an agreement, if there was a single space program for the whole world, it'd be both easier to swallow from the economical point of view and would be good from a scientific point of view, instead of reinventing the wheel scientists could focus on the real problems.
As long as India is concerned, it's a bit harsh to spend bilions of dollars to send ppl into space, when so many in India are starving etc. However the problem is well beyond my comprehension, I bet that if they actually did spend the money just to buy some food, next ppl would be starving again, if however they spend on research, with some luck they will develop technological means to overcome poverty.
What bothers me most with developing countries is the fact that despite spreading diseases, high mortality, poverty, bad living conditions, the law (as in China) there is still growth in population. I won't have a child unless I can secure his future up until University at least, they just don't care...
But this is world record, just look at hypersonic cars etc, I'm not implying that you actually need every LPG powered car to go 300 km/h, but if they want world's attention and having the best technology at hand they should do much better, right?
Is it just me or is 315km/h not very impressive? I live in Poland (where car drives you) and people often modify their cars to use LPG instead of petrol (actually the car can run on both fuels). The car loses some of its horsepower, but I've been driving at almost 200km/h on LPG myself, so I see no reason to employ space technology to go 50% faster.
It's always nice to find a picture of your house on the Internet... I think that in google we should trust, they will lead us in the right direction, they seem to be having better and better ideas all the time...
I'm in Poland. I've had no problems in the morning, my friend has just unlock his copy.

I noticed this trend a long time ago and it it quite silly to me; Everybody know that hardware is useless without software (actually it's both ways). In the past two years I think I spent like $2000 on hardware at least, on the contrary, last month excluded, I spent $0 on software. Many people think like I used: hardware is more 'real' something to hold on to. But this is a bad idea and that's why less and less software gets made compared to amount that could be done. Simply there is not enough funding and that why all console makers have problems with games for their new hardware.
A9 seems a very good tool in searching some decent naked pictures. If by any chance it finds two similar pictures in a row then you can be sure there is whole series you're dealing with. Unfortunately I've also found it to a perfect tool for all sickos. When I enter "nude girls" or similar term, plenty of the pictures showed girls that weren't even in their teens. Of course I had all the content filters turned off, but I had no intention in watching such pictures and still I had to.
When I first read the title I'd thought it says: "forget about squeezing money from patents", apparently it was too good to be true;) I'd have never imagined that patent, the idea that was supposed to speed up research, i.e. provide money to the inventors so that they can discover even more, would be misused in such a way. How can you expect someone to pay royalties if his product is free (open source)?
Nice that they mentioned Poland, unlike movie industry, id software seems to be realistic and they know well that here in Poland we have Doom 3 already (you insensitive clods). On they other hand they know as well as we do that in Poland we're not going to have the proper hardware to run the game at least until 2006 when there will enough computers stolen from other EU countries.
Where can I possibly apply? "The Department of Defense is seeking to hire highly skilled and deeply motivated U.S. citizens to work as civilians" Any help is appreciated.
Personally I'd use all those responsible for placing the mines to remove them. Probably this would mean I'd have to hire Bush, Clinton etc. How silly of them.
Perhaps it's a shock for you American people, but here in Poland we have plenty of meetings called "ustawka" (which means "setup" or "arrangement"). Usually, it's between football fans. They enter the opposite team's website/forum post some vulgar notes, arrange a meeting and fight. I've never been into such a fight because you never know what's going to happen, bunch of forty crazed people fighting each other with no rules. But it ain't as bad as it was in the 90's since they don't use weapons anymore. However in Ukraine, for instance, it is still the case, they use chains, bats, knives even guns. The general rule is: the further east you go the worse the manners. In contrast could you imagine, for instance, NBA fans fighting each other over a lost game? I envy you US and Canadian citizens for living in a civilised country.
Since the competition is being wiped out, I think I'll start my own warez group;) It's like with drugs you arrest one boss another gang takes over in no time.
It all should be resolved in a different manner, instead of criminalising more and more actions, more things should be allowed. Think about it, nowadays nearly everyone is a criminal, either he shared some files, or unknowingly infringed some patents.
Like someone said: "According to our research P2P sharers are 500% more prone to commit another crime. In most cases it's file sharing";)
The only reasonable solution is to allow it and to have it under some control, if for instance drugs were legal, there would be no mafia whatsoever.
I don't know about long term effect of totally free software, but I suppose people would donate or sth like this, in worst case some software would not be developed and so what?
The most obvious thing that comes to my mind about this survey: BS. The results are not a bit suprising, once there was contest for hacking as many sites as you can and you got 1 point for win machine, 2pts for linux and 5 ponts for *BSD/MacOS. On the other hand the numbers for the BSDs and OSX are lower simply because there are many more systems running linux than macosx so the numbers are absolute not relative. Also many unexperienced enthusiasts choose to run linux coz it's free and windows is usually run by 'professionals'. Moreover the bigger nuber of intrusions still doesn't say that the system is less secure, it's just that the securrity holes are better known. In fact they are fixed quickly while windows remains vulnerable and users don't even know.

If they themselves will use some sort of p2p, they won't be able to ban it.
All the recent changes in law, IP, software patents simply frightens me...

People always confuse these two words,
stenography - typing fast on a weird machine,
steganography - information hiding techniques.

I wish there was a day in a year when slashdot wouldn't post anything. Free yourselves from your CPUs and make Easter a computer-free day.
That's my point, after all why should the consumer be responsible for the product, it should be sold working with no need for hacing whatsoever.
Instead of simply configuring your PC to suit your needs, you buy some exotic pieces of hardware to do the very same tasks but the hard way.
While I don't mind versatility, things should not be sold to do something different from what they were designed for.
Since the competition is being wiped out, I think I'll start my own warez group ;) It's like with drugs you arrest one boss another gang takes over in no time. ;)
