In my experience, when the electronic pad is an option, signing a paper copy isn't. I asked once at Best Buy if I could just sign a paper receipt, and I was told that they didn't do that anymore. So, when I want to buy my toys, I have to either sign the stupid pad, or carry wads of cash on me. Neither option is very appealing for me.

(Except for those public radio donations. That's a good cause.) Maybe if I was a more hardcore radio listener...or if I lived somewhere that didn't have a good radio selection...I dunno. Does anyone who uses XM want to explain why they think it's worth the fee? I'm a bit curious.

While I admire all of those who are willing to actually pipe water into their computers for the sake of keeping them cool, I am still more than a little frightened of this idea. Knowing me, something would end up leaking (probably through fault of my own) and my precious tower would go up in a ball of flame or some such. Rather, I choose to take your regular old air cooling and make it more effective. Through proper cable management, good airflow paths, a set of nice quiet fans, and the ability to control them with respect to how much they are needed, I keep my fan almost as cool as a friend of mine who does have a liquid cooling system, and with very comparable noise levels. If you're willing to do some work and set up a decent air-based system (and be willing to clean out the dust), there's no need to balance a bucket of water precariously on top of one's computer... : |

The full title is Martian Successor Nadesico, just for an FYI.

Now, are you looking for anime movies, or anime series that have been released on film/DVD? If you're looking for movies, Princess Mononoke is generally pretty popular. It has also been redone with some pretty decent dubbing, if you don't prefer to listen to the original Japanese (as I do). Really, anything by Miyasaki is good. Escaflowne - The Movie is pretty good, too (better than the series, at least, IMHO). Akira is a classic. The Evangelion movies are decent, but tend to follow along in the "drug-induced insanity" mentioned in the parent. Metropolis is another very good choice.

As for series, there's so much variation, it's hard to say what to get without knowing a bit about the person you're buying for. You're most likely to find a lot of Dragonball and Gundam, which isn't terrible anime, but I personally think that there is plenty better. (I know I'm going to get flamed for this...) Many series have been released in DVD box sets, and I personally feel that this is a good way to go. It's nice to have all of the options that go along with DVD. Some good choices that may not have been mentioned already: Kenshin (both the series and Samurai X, the OVA), Escaflowne (the series), Fushigi Yugi, Serial Experiments Lain (one of my personal favorites), the list goes on and on.

It's sometimes hard to find anime. Suncoast usually has a decent collection. Sam Goody either has a very good collection or nothing past Dragonball...I've seen both. Virgin (If there's one near you) is another good choice. And there's always Amazon...

    Hope this helps!

So far, I see a ton of posts saying something along the lines of:

So what? I'll just copy it anyway!

I have two comments to make on this. First, what do people do if they do not have the technical experience, equipment, knowledge that such an option exists, etc., etc.? Everyone reading this is an ultra-geek slashdotter who wrote their own more efficient copy of the DivX codec for fun and profit, I know, so you don't have to worry...but what about average joe on the street whohas never heard of DivX? What are they going to do when their paid-for merchandise stops working? Nothing, probably...so nothing will get changed, because everyone who usually worries about this stuff will be copying the discs. Second, why is making a copy in DivX even considered to be an option? I love DivX as much as everyone else, and I use it to make copies of movies (but of course not illegal copies... ^^;;), but for movies that I own the DVDs of, I would never dream of making a DivX copy. DivX is good, but not good enough. This is the reason I still buy DVDs...who wants their only copy of LoTR:FoTR to be an almost-good-but-not-quite-perfect DivX copy? I'm willing to shell out that $20 or so to have a nice pristine clean DVD copy that I can count on to not have artifacts, sound lag, etc. DivX is simply not, nor will likely ever be, an acceptable replacement for DVD.
