Hi guys.
We've all been putting in long hours but we've really come together as a group and I love that. Big thanks to Omar for putting up the poster that says "There is no I in team" as well as the one that says "Hang In There, Baby." That cat is hilarious. However, while we are fighting a jihad, we can't forget to take care of the cave. And frankly I have a few concerns.
First of all, while it's good to be concerned about cruise missiles, we should be even more concerned about the scorpions in our cave. Hey, you don't want to be stung and neither do I so we need to sweep the cave daily. I've posted a sign up sheet near the main cave opening.
Second, it's not often I make a video address but when I do, I'm trying to scare the most powerful country on earth, okay? That means that while we're taping, please do not ride your razor scooter in the background. Just while we're taping. Thanks.
Third point, and this is a touchy one. As you know, by edict, we're not supposed to shave our beards. But I need everyone to just think hygiene, especially after mealtime. We're all in this together.
Fourth: food. I bought a box of Cheeze-Its recently, clearly wrote "Osama" on the front, and put it on the top shelf. Today, my Cheeze-Its were gone. Consideration. That's all I'm saying.
Finally, we've heard that there may be American soldiers in disguise trying to infiltrate our ranks. I want to set up patrols to look for them. First patrol will be Omar, Mohammed, Abdul, Akbar, and Richard.
Very true...whenever something has copy protection, you can bet that someone else will break it. So they should just stop trying? Should all devs out there just accept the fact that once they create something they lose all rights to it (for the record, I have a couple gigs of MP3's etc)?
I heard somewhere once that the only reason we have locks is to keep honest people honest. Very true and very applicable to the topic of copy protection: Copy Protection keeps honest people honest. No more, no less. From what I have learned working for a software company, that is an acceptable goal.
I think we all know that the main reason for these laws is not to stop "legitimate" back-ups, but rather to prevent pirating music (or anything else). Shoving your head in the sand and saying "well *I* don't pirate" is pointless. Everytime this topic comes up, people start screaming what about their rights and screw the rights of others with opposing views/opinions regarding copy protection.
Why is it a Crime to break into someones house and steal their stuff?? I never do that!
Why is it a Crime to kill people? I never hurt anyone!
It goes on and on.
Maybe I am totaly wrong...that is Ok...this is just my view.:)
I remember buying games, installing them and playing for months (or longer) without ever installing a patch. Of course, up until recently ( say 5 years?), if you wanted a patch, you called or wrote in and if there was a patch, they would mail it to you.
Now that distributing a patch is a easy as throwing up a link, It seems to me that software companies are now saying, lets ship now and fix the bugs in a patch (AO, Tribes2, B&W, and many other products, not just games).
And while I am on it, gaming sites like Planet<whatever> never seem to have anything bad to say about these games. I wonder how much $ (if any) they get from the game publishers to help pimp their stuff?
Anyway, This is just a frightning trend. How many people here wont buy a game until a few patches are out? When was Quake2 finaly solid? It was the 20 release right?
It doesn't seem to be the Dev's who release the crap...it is the bean counters screaming "we gotta ship soon!! We will miss our profit window!"
Anyone else notice this or am I insane (certainly possible;))
I have had a passport account for a while now so i didnt really remember what info they asked. So I just filled one out. What personal info are you giving up? They asked for my name, state & zip code. I answered with BS and it accepted it all. There are a lot of people screaming that they would wouldnt trust MS with thier personal info...ya, they will *never* get my zip code! You give up more personal info buying something at radio shack.
Maybe I am reading your post wrong, but what I get from it is that something that had been mass-produced does not qualify as art. I believe that the Original product is what matters. When something has been created, is it a test of time as to whether is should be deamed art? When a piece of art is created, it may or may not meet the criteria for fasionable art at the time, however may eventually be reconized for the skill and vision it may have.
The Mona Lisa is apparently one of treasures of the Art World, and yet I see wino's bumming change in Pike Street wearing a Mona Lisa T-shirt. By your post, it would seem that the Mona Lisa falls into your lower catagory of Art.
What % of people who play video games go on a rampage?
So this is new? Kids exposed to violence? fake violence at that. What about kids who see people killed in thier nieghborhoods? How about those kids who live in areas of the world where people are shot every day? with real guns? What about kids in history who have seen armies come through and slaughter villages? If these people turned thier energy toward helping stop real violence, maybe then they could make a difference.
How things have changed in the past year. Do a quick seach on/. for Napster and you can see how the attitudes about napster have changed as it becomes less the pioneer (for the mainstream) and more just another way for someone to make $$ off of what people are doing anyway.
Reading through the comments, I see a lot of people trying to slant this in an anti-MS way. Just thought that I would point out that USB was jointly developed by several companies including MS.
Sir, I would like to give you "props" for such a poignant and thought provoking post. I am about to re-read it, at which time I shall retire to my study to mull over your musings and perhaps come back and add my thoughts to your statements.
Kudos sir!

Obviously, you know your way around a computer, so why not just get emulators for all the various consoles? And I can't really think of any games that I would want to play that are only available on consoles.
The PS2 and Xbox are identicle in terms of end result except the Xbox has a few more features (LOL and who would expect anything less from MS?:) )
If you don't like MS, just come out and say it, don't pussyfoot around the issue.

What the hell? I just responded to another post by you where you said Why buy the XBox when you can have a computer that does more...and here you are talking about buying a PS2??
It is drawing attentioln for the same reason the PS2 did...and the Dreamcst before it...etc
What the Xbox is starting and PS (3 Maybe??) will probably do, is make this an entertainment system. $300 for a dvd player and a gaming system. Thats not bad.
And with add-ons now and probably standard later, you can surf the web do email etc. I know you are saying I have my computer that can do all that and more. But my grandmother would love it. It would be on her TV so it will be easy to read, 1 button to push and it is on, unobtrusive, and now she can watch DVD's.

When I was with USWest, I had a Cisco 675 which was great! It ran CBOS (Cisco Broadband OS), was a NAT, DHCP, TFTP and Telnet server.
After I switched to Verizon I sold it for $180.
