"The environment, however, looks the same across platforms. Whether you run an Alpha or a Sun, everything is in the same place as your home machine. Likewise, it doesn't matter if gimp is in/usr/bin(DistroA) or/usr/local/bin(DistroB) So long as the Gimp Icon is available from a toolbar or menu. "
Of course it matters. How can you do file management if you don't know where the files are? People seem to think that all you need to do is put icons and windows everywhere and it's instantly easy to use. Nonsense-first of all the directory system is a big problem. I wonder when this whole/usr business will go away. Windows is no better-this whole start menu is awful because you have to deal with 2 different directory representations instead of one.
I was deeply offended by the suggestion that window managers should only show 2 windows open at the same time. What? people are that stupid or something that they can't deal with many things open at the same time? I thought the whole point of using a modern OS was that you could do many things at the same time. Yes, linux should be more consistent but it shouldn't be dumbed down for people who won't even deal with anything even slightly different than Microsoft Office (which will never come to linux anyway)

They're not-but there's no excuse. If you can talk about the most obscure points of C++ vs java then you can read a decent book on nutrition to fully understand what bad food does to the body and the mind. If you can spend hours in front of computer fixing bugs every night then surely you can walk for 30 minutes a day. Otherwise what's the difference between a supposedly educated person and some fat dummy who watches football or soap operas all day if both wolf down beer and chips
QNX doesn't need to prove itself. QNX systems have been up and running since 1994 non-stop. QNX is used in nuclear power plants. I don't think I would trust my life to linux, however. QNX doesn't need to evolve faster than linux because it's already light-years ahead of it. The linux development model is ok for fixing minor bugs and features here and there but doesn't seem to work when major overhaul is required. For that you need a tight focused group of engineers-not 5 million people from the internet. That's why linux GUI's (there is no standard GUI for those concerned with consistent look-and-feel) are still based on x-windows. On the other hand, if this Amiga Linux won't be based on x-windows, people will complain that all there other linux apps and graphics card drivers won't work on it. Forget about the LSB that's for sure.
first commodore dies. then escom and viscorp. Gateway takes over and it seemed Amiga was still stagnating. Then Collas takes over and it seemed like there's new hope. Now this. I give up-Amiga is dead if it's Yet Another Linux Distro. Can't we have a NEW operating system instead of tinkering around with unix for the 50th million time? Imagine a hard real time kernel as the basis for a consumer OS? ha. Look, I believe in promoting linux as much as the next slashdotter but what linux needs is more focus-not more fragmentation. Ya I'm upset
only when there's MS Office on linux I'm afraid. It's not that there's anything wrong with WP-it's very good technology. But it's because of that pesky doc format and the training costs to switch everyone to a new platform

I will not condone this love affair that was chosen in a committee!
face it, you're a racist. There are many decent religious Christians out there. I'm not a Christian and I don't know what you are but I'd rather see 100 of them to one of you
If this means less government spending then it means less taxes which is good enough for me. Buy your own computer if you want to see what you want on the web. Internet connections in libraries are not meant for fooling around-people pay for them too. I'm tired of some people who want to censor everything but I'm ALSO tired of people who want taxpayers to PAY for abortions, porn, free needles for drug users etc etc
Again with the free beer stuff? If NT is faster -whether because of performance or cost of training is lower because it's easier to use- then it saves money. Time is money too.
don't laugh in 5 years-it's 1999 and we're still using VHS. The stupidities of today could affect the future. I say campaign against cable modems just like the campaign against Divx. 1) cable modems split bandwith which means if everyone used them we wouldn't have high bandwith in the future 2) monopolization tactics by AT&T and Microsoft 3) this @home nonsense-hey if there are upload limits then how will we have decent video conferencing, better games on the net,etc

Hooray! We did it! Alright! Yes! Make room the the dorfs! It's going to be fun watching the linux newbies as they are slaughtered by the iMac veterans

oh give it up please. most people know how to lighten up (unless you're one of those idiots who complained to mindcraft or whatever)
