  1. DRAM Based SSDs on Solid State Drives - Fast, Rugged, and Expensive · · Score: 1

We've been testing DRAM based SSDs (http://www.tigicorp.com) for a while. Very fast. They don't suffer the issues of flash based SSDs but they come at a much higher cost. A single drive an saturate any interconnect you'll find on the mass market right now. The neat thing about the Tigi drives is that they actually run Linux on the drive so it's easy to change interface type or even put applications on the drives themselves.

Not sure how they'll get by with this seeing as others have been doing it. But I can see why they'd want. These container ship data centers are becoming very popular. Why build an expensive DC somewhere when I can just drop a container in a spot that has power. If I build a big DC I run the risk of running out of power in the near future leaving my new DC unable to grow. With these containers you can drop and move as conditions dictate.

The price on Ebay for the Wii is dropping too. I finally bought one last night for $335 from a local buyer. There are a number of tools out there to find someone local so you don't pay shipping and no worries about what you actually get. $335 is only about $60 profit for the guy after he paid $250 + tax. I didn't even sit and wait for the BEST deal as they were all falling near that anyway. A few days earlier the average was $400 or a little more.

  20. I love achievements. on 360 Achievements More Popular Than Microsoft Imagined · · Score: 1

They add a new layer to the games. I went back to play CoD2 on Veteran for the achievement and found it to be a better game that way. I'm not sure I'd have done it otherwise. It also just gives you some goals to shoot for and not just run through a game.

I'm borrowing a PS3 right now and they have a similar system. One place that it is better is that by earning their reward points you can unlock things like concept art or pics. The bad thing is that with no central identity I can't see which achievements my friend has done. That's a major loss. The best part of achievements is comparing with your friends. Getting an achievement per level lets me see how far they are in the game. I also didn't care for how (at least on Resistance) the PS3 rewards were hidden until you did it. It's a little aimless and everyone knows you can just look them up online so go ahead and tell me what they are.

Gamerscore...that I don't care about. Yeah, it's easy to hack a high score with enough time and easy games. I don't care. Achievements between friends are what matters not gamerscores between idiots on some forum.

I don't know where you see jaggy graphics but it looks great on my setup....absolutely as good as the promo shots. No issues with network play either. Resistance on PS3, now that's a different story. I want to know how much Sony paid reviewers for the 9/10 scores on that.

The 360 wasn't forgotten this year. It just wasn't in such limited supply to make the news. It got a ton of good press when the video marketplace was released in November.

  22. My Humble Opinion on People Swapping PS3s for Wiis? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Friend loaned me his PS3. Meh. If Resistance is THE game to own for it right now, save your money. GoW is 10x the game. The new GT HD "concept" demo is pretty good, but as for graphics I think PGR3 looked every bit as good a year ago. Physics in the game? That's a different story. Sony's network implementation leaves a LOT to be desired. I'll happily keep paying my $50/year Live membership over Sony's free offering. I couldn't even use my normal nickname since Junkie is a banned word on their service.

I love consoles and I'm sure I'll end up with one...but it'll be at least 6 months. Luckily I just moved to a 1080p DLP set from my older HD RPTV that didn't do 720p. If I had my old set everything I've played except for GT HD would have been shown in 480p.

I don't know of any modern DLP with close to half a second lag. That would show up immediately with a de-sync'd audio/video. Now, if you do a lot of scaling or other conversion then yes, it could show up but so far I'm not seeing that on anything. My Mitsu scales everything to 1080p and I see no lag at all on the video. Audio coming out of my receiver is perfectly in sync.

  24. DLP on What Gamers Need To Know About Buying an HD TV · · Score: 1

The sweet spot on pricing right now is DLP. The latest sets (7th Generation?) are really mature. Very few people see the rainbow effect on these. They take 1080p signals and have good doublers and scalers for other content. They give you true blacks and great color reproduction.

The only downside is you can't hang them on a wall. To me that isn't a problem. I still have a component rack with my receiver, DVD player, etc in it and my front floor standing speakers. A TV on the wall would be out of place. I just upgrade to the Mitsubishi 65732 Medallion series 65" DLP for $2500. That's a steal for a set like this.

True 1080p LCDs are also dropping fast. My stepdad just got a 40" Samsung for $2K. Not cheap, but a whole lot less than they were before and it's a much nicer set.

Now Microsoft needs to get their HDMI cable out for the 360. It's my last component connected device. I want simpler cabling.

Picture quality. If the rest of your setup is up to the standard you'll see the difference. Back when the standard DVD player was a $250 Toshiba I got a $750 Pioneer Elite (grey market). My wife noticed the change right away. Better color reproduction. Far fewer artifacts. Better blacks...etc. Now, that was a couple of years ago. Even a cheap player today is probably the same as my Pioneer, but TVs have also gotten better. I have a cheap LG upconvert DVD player on one TV at home. I bet a $2K upconverting player does a better job.
