sure, you sort of make sense, but I think the point they're trying to get across is that hacking is just like drug use- once you start modding your xbox, it will lead to harder crimes like piracy and raping his neighbor's dog. The fact that he was selling this just reinforces the negativity surround the 'hacking' addiction.

good point, but the father is a programmer- I doubt his son is ever in the room while he's playtesting. the overwhelming majority of the time it's just code on the screens. the tv he uses for playing is only a 10" tv, but the monitors he uses for the actual work are much larger. most of what he's doing would not be attractive to kids- it's just colored text. he prefers it this way. while I was there on christmas the main sound engineer for the game did some play testing and they were sure to close the door so the kids couldn't wander in while marilyn manson's creature was attacking them. it was very interesting, even to non-gamers like my girlfriend and I.

  16. Re:Your influence is the number one thing on How To Balance Life And Technology For Kids? · · Score: 1

I agree to a certain extent. I'm not sure what else their son does- I don't see them very often because we live in different states. I last saw them at christmas. I think he was just happy that his kid isn't into that stuff yet- he's only 5 or 6 (I don't really know), but I'm sure he'll learn how to play video games when he's ready. I would think they have him involved in lots of other activities, I just don't know what they are. as a game programmer who has mostly worked with sports games and he hates both gaming and sports, I think he has a different view of it all. I'm not really a gamer either, but mostly because I think of it as a distraction. I don't think his work schedule would allow him to be much of a coach either, but that has more to do with the demand of his job then anything else.

  18. Re:Your influence is the number one thing on How To Balance Life And Technology For Kids? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I wouldn't be so sure of this. a good friend of mine has a 6 year old and he's glad that his son shows no interest in computers or video games yet- he's surprised there hasn't been any peer presure from his son's friends. the father is programmer and developer for the main gaming platforms and has all the developer kits in his office. the room is always locked and the son has a play area in the room while his father is working and needs to watch him, but otherwise doesn't participate or pay attention to what his father is doing, which can be particularly useful when he's working on a violent game like area 51. the father is very happy that his son just wants to run around outside and play with real toys for now.

it's the forward menu in the phone software itself. I use t-mobile for service. I just tested the system with another outside line and it's not in fact getting a busy, so I'm not positive why it doesn't loop, but it doesn't. yeah, the phone forwards after 10 seconds, before it would hit the service providers voicemail. I don't use gnome, but it sounds cool- I may try this later with sendmail.

  21. Re:simulInbox? on A Private GSM Cell? · · Score: 1

I'm not sure what the evolution you're referring to is, but here's the setup I use and I think it doesn't trigger another simulring because it's probably giving a busy tone at the time, which would kill the cell call right when vonage is switching to voicemail- I would need to test this with a third separate phone. vonage is set for 15 seconsd delay before hitting voicemail and simulring is turned on. on my cell (nokia 3650) I have several forward options and the one I'm using is called 'if not answered' and it's set to forward back to my main # after 10 seconds. this setup has worked flawlessly for me and all voicemail ends up with vonage. I would guess that you could setup spamassassin or sendmail to somehow filter for vonage voicemail messages and then sms you through that somehow- is that what you want evolution for?

  22. Re:do you have broadband? on A Private GSM Cell? · · Score: 1

nope, no endless loop. the main vonage # doesn't forward- it simultaniously rings and then the cell forwards back to the main # after somany seconds- the main # does not consider this a new call and it's timed to go into the vonage voicemail at that point. This does everything I want without a pbx- that's why I recommend it. I'm not certain how it works so perfectly, but it does.

  23. do you have broadband? on A Private GSM Cell? · · Score: 1, Interesting

I use vonage and have the simulring feature turned on to ring my cell at the same time- then I have my cell set to forward after a set time back to the main number- this is awesome because all my numbers now ring to all my phones and since vonage has free incoming calls and the cell doesn't, I can manage my time with both plans more easily. All calls also end up in the same voicemail box with the vonage account and then that emails the message to me so I never have to check it manually.
This system has worked amazingly well for me for the last couple months and it's eliminated all the issues I used to have with other landlines.
    good luck!!!
