  1. "Much Anticipated" - Please on Governing the Internet Report Released · · Score: 1

The UN is like a tiny mosquito to the United States. Sometimes a minor annoyance but usually not even noticed. Let me look at CNN news - not a word. Let me look at Google News - not a word at the front page. Let me check The New York Times - not a single word. Just as I thought, this is not a much anticipated report and the only ones who have much anticipated this nonsense are the folks who like to nip at the heels of the big dog. The US will not give up the ICANN and all the yipping and yapping won't change a bit of that. Kofi can yip and this UN Panel can yap and it will have zero effect.

I don't know why anyone would think otherwise. Everything that Microsoft puts on your computer wants to call back home and report on what you do and how you do it. Everything Claria trys to put on your computer wants to call back home and report your every action and keystroke. So running any 'Microsoft spyware' in the first place is like letting a burglar watch your home. What did you expect would eventually happen?

  5. Tell Me About It Dude on Amazon Patents User Viewing Histories · · Score: 1

I bought "Vanishing Point" when it first came out in DVD. Bought it on Amazon since I had them email me to let me know when it came out. Vanishing Point is a movie from the 70's that has Barry Newman as a damaged soul -a spiritually and mentally drained man driving a souped up car in 24 hours from Denver to San Francisco breaking all the speed laws along the way until he has every police car and helicopter on his tail. They can't catch him as he pops uppers and has flash backs to the turning points in his life. You feel for Kowalski and you feel his pain. You are stunned when in the end he steps on the gas and drives his car into the road block made of two huge bulldozers. A stunning unexpected ending and one that makes you think about what you just saw. A movie that makes you think and examine your own philosophy of life. A cult movie. So now why does Amazon always want to show me that idiotic Vin Diesel movie Fast and Furious? Ahhhhhh --- no! Sure both movies have fast cars but that doesn't make them the same! That's Amazon's way of figuring out what I like. Nice try but they are wrong. Needless to say I don't trust their recommendations.

  6. Lame Duck President Allows Congressional Courage on House Limits Patriot Act Rules on Library Records · · Score: 3, Interesting

The only factor that is different from when the Patriot Act was originally passed is that the power of the President has begun to wane. He is a lame duck President whose Vice President isn't going to run for the top spot. The voices of the people who vote is as loud as it was then but now that voice attaches itself to votes for the next election cycle and money to campaign chests. A change in moral compasses on the part of your congressmen isn't what is happening here. They haven't suddenly decided that it's morally wrong to throw the Constitution aside along with yor rights. Nope, nothing like that. It's that your local Congressmen has to listen to you for a while again - to be reelected. So make noise now and let him know what you think of the Patriot Act. Tell him that you actually like the Bill of Rights and won't vote for someone who lets the President take it away piece by piece. This might be a good time to let your Congressman know what you think of the Guantanamo Bay Prison as well. After all, the weakness of the President in this matter is like blood in the water and those who have problems with these issues need to speak now when their voices will mean the most.

  7. Re:Rise and FALL?-I disagree on The Rise and Fall of Blogs · · Score: 3, Insightful

Blogs are not a terrible source of news. The idea that the monolithical, 'report the same story' news services is all there is worth reading or listening to is foolish. When the riots were going on in China recently and try as I might I could not find any deep analysis or reporting on those anti-Japanese riots I looked for relevant blogs to fill me on on what I was missing. Like URL:http://angrychineseblogger.blog-city.com/ and URL:http://pekingduck.org/ which not only gave me a chinese point of view, they also posted pictures not available on the usual news sources. Pictures and commentary from those riots taken by someone there at the riots and who posted those pictures on a chinese language blog. Sure you are going to get a lot of tripe but you'll also get pointed to news and discussions you wouldn't have otherwise found.

  10. Creationism Argument Born on Extinct Wildflower Found In California · · Score: 0, Troll

I can just see the wheels turning in the mind of Creationists about this. The flower previously believed to be extinct as well as the recent story of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker which had been thought to be extinct for some fifty years will now be used as evidence of creationism over evolution. After all, those creatures were gone weren't they? Indeed, they will argue, man does not know everything and this is evidence of god's hand in ways that are incomprehensible to science. Or something like that. I'm sure the creationist line about this will be more mind befuddling - but interesting and entertaining.

Suuuure you have a reasonable expectation of privacy but then if you weren't a Perv why would you encrypt anything? This in conjunction with the use of extensive background investigation to find anything you might have done as a child twenty or thirty years ago or any mistakes, errors, and or laspes in judgment over the years leads us to be able to efficiently discredit and disregard anything you might have to say. Thank goodness for Judges in the Peoples Republic of Minnesota who are working diligently to protect us from you guys. (please note the heavy sarcasm in case anyone from Rio Linda is reading this)

I bought my iPod thinking that it was probably locked down and the ability to transfer songs and files would be limited but I knew you people out there would fix the problem. It is annoying when locked down proprietary design locks the features down of a device I would otherwise buy and so I will look elsewhere when that happens -I'm looking at you Sony. (take your memory sticks and shove them) The iPod is popular despite it's attempted lockdown and they would do well to not follow the Sony example.

Things like that make folks like me turn 'automatic windows updates' the hell off.

Umm. My Nikon experience is just fine. The 8700 came with a disk of software, Arcsoftware ( which I've never used) and Nikon View which does quite a lot thank you very much. Just this second I opened up Nikon View and opened a NEF file in another second. Opened the file in Nikon Editor which admittedly took about 30 seconds. In Photoshop that would take minutes. From there I could mess with the image in various ways. Saved it in high quality jpeg in about 5 seconds. Opened the jpeg in Photoshop and got it websized quickly. All good. What was the problem again? The picture was taken with my Nikon 8700 and was made ready for the web with the included Nikon software. Perhaps your friend got the camera from a internet site and I hear that sometimes they strip some of the items that Nikon sells with the camera. Here is the picture. http://members.tripod.com/~gadbuddhaa/nikonpicture .htm

Not everything is the man trying to hold you down. I think the proper way to look at this is the public service model. The city/county/state might provide you a public bathroom. Rest stops along the highway are a great example. They provide you a place to go to the bathroom. Sorry though, they don't usually provide showers, bathrobes, your favorite magazine or even those comfortable cushioned toilet seats. Should they have to? No. The city/county/state wants to provide you some internet connection in a public place. You'll want to be able to check your email and zip over to the news. Do they need to give you a chance to view porn or do something that many taxpayers would find objectionable? (ie against community standards) Heck no. When I'm going down the freeway and I see that Rest Stop coming up I say thank goodness there's a bathroom coming up. I don't say curses- no cushioned toilet seats - *&%# the man! If they have WiFi I'm going to say woo hoo- check the email and check the weather conditions - not *%#$ the man! He's not letting me go to truckerhostanks.com!

An arrogant, self centered little tiny egomanical ankle biting country that has a part of it's government devoted to keeping english words out of the language. An arrogant, rude country that thinks they are a gift to the world. An arrogant rude country who after they were liberated from Nazi Germany at the end of World War II refused to be a part of NATO because it wasn't run by them. They happily took the Marshall Plan money from the US all the while ankle biting the US at every step. And they are still nasty little ankle biters. Instead of biting the ankles of Google because their idea of putting books online which happen to be in english offends the sensibilities of the French, why don't they build their own in French. I'm sure all of those French speaking countries out there, you know those old French colonies in Africa and Asia - would love to be able to find the collected works of DeGaulle online. Any while the French are at it, why don't they simply create their own Google instead of whining about an American created company being in English? Geez. But then the French will be the French.

A very funny Monty Python skit. Except the Spanish Inquisition wasn't funny and like any witch hunt you will find witches even when there are none to be found. The equivilent of the Spanish Inquisition swooped down on these people and heads were going to roll. It doesn't matter that there were no disks to go missing in the first place. It only matters that it's perceived that something is being done to correct the problem - even if that particular problem doesn't exist. There is bound to be some problem if we look hard enough. The vengeful, righteous persecutors who went and gleefully destroyed people can sleep happily in their beds because they are under the misguided belief that they found and burned their nonexistent witches with the full backing of god and country. It's a shame they don't make children watch The Oxbow Incident (old black and white movie about hanging cattle rustlers who were not guilty - a study in mob justice)
