  2. Competition on HP/Compaq Merger Official Today · · Score: 1

Great... Now there will be even more competition for the few jobs that ARE still available. The biggest problem is that when you find an open job now, they want a specific set of skills. This used to be okay, because they could just train you on the skills that you don't have. But now, we have so many people available that they'll just pass on you until they can find someone who already knows the systems they have in place. I wonder if the heads of these huge companies even have a clue what they're doing to all the little guys that will be losing their jobs now... ARGH!

I think they're missing their target audience here. I mean sure, the techno illiterate (AOL users) will be able to use a TiVo, but are they really going to be the ones that want this functionality? They need to make this service available to everyone who uses the "real" internet.

  13. Re:I still don't understand ... on TiVo Series 2 Review · · Score: 0, Redundant

TiVo will work with anything. You put the TiVo in between your cable box (or whatever) and your TV. The TiVo has an IR Blaster (basically a remote control for other devices) that the TiVo can control. After the initial set up, when you tell the TiVo to change channels, it repeats the signal through the IR Blaster to the cable box

It also does this on its own to change channels for recording. You just have to make sure you leave your cable box turned on. Simple.

  15. HDTV Tivo on TiVo Series 2 Review · · Score: 5, Interesting

I love my series one TiVo, I really do. But now it's keeping me from buying an HDTV. Honestly, I go to the local big-chain electronics store and drool over the big widescreen HDTV's like everyone else, but then I think back to the days before TiVo. I would actually have to keep track of when TV shows are on TV again. Forget it.

And I know I could still use the TiVo with the High Def set, but really, why? The only reason then for high def then is DVDs, and that's maybe 10% of my viewing.

So while this new model has some great features, I'm waiting for the High Def model. This will be the killer app.

Is there really much visual difference between 700 fps and 135 fps?
    Yes, there is.

Granted, 700 fps is ridiculous, but have you ever noticed how your framerate goes down when there's more action on screen? The fact that there's more overhead available means that when the action heats up, the framerate will stay above the 60-120 frames per second your monitor shows. This means you'll still have smooth animations and so forth even when there's 500 rockets coming at you in Quake III.

I use a RIM 850 pager that I got for business purposes. The writer states that this phone uses the same "packet switched network" as the rest of the blackberry's use. I sure hope not.

My pager is so bad that it sometimes takes 2 hours for a page to get through - and that's with a full signal! It's so rare that I get a full signal though, it's unbelievable that I get messages at all.

On top of this, the author mentions "good battery life". My pager literally only lasts 36 hours with a fully charged 1800 mAh NiMH battery. If this is your description of good, well, I don't know what to say.

To keep things fair, I have used a RIM 950 pager on an evaluation basis, and it did perform somewhat better as far as connectivity, and it had a built in rechargable lithium ion battery. Still - try it before you buy it!

You just can't beat the Mac's ability to switch networks on the fly. Since windows can't switch network settings without a reboot, this is more of an OS issue.

You need to get your information straight. This article is talking about completely different architectures being supported with no additional hardware.

Besides, any NT based (at least from 4.0 up to 2000 and XP) can change settings on the fly. As a matter of fact, XP can even retain settings for more than one network and automatically switch between the two, one w/ DHCP and another with static settings. Or you could use NetSwitcher to do it...
