...I assume anyways, so they won't die if this isn't a hit right off the bat. Sort of like MS and the original XBox, with a steady stream of software revenue they can afford to give the console time to catch on.
...the iphone GPS is good enough (as opposed to my old Android, whose GPS was worthless. YMMV, of course). And I'm guessing you don't carry your Garmin with you everywhere you go. The ultimate Swiss army knife is, of course, silly, but millions of people us iPhones every day. They may not be the best at anything, but they do a lot of things pretty well, and that's powerful.
The mars rovers are failures? If you think unmanned exploration is slow, try putting together the technology, and budget, to send a humans on a round trip to Mars. We could send dozens--maybe hundreds--of robots to Mars for the same cost.
Well put. I'd rather see GM put it's efforts into improving and cutting costs on the Volt than chasing Tesla. Tesla makes a great toy for millionaires looking for a second or third car. If Chevy can get the Volt's price down, it's great car for a lot of people
Rebooted several times and the last 3 patches still wouldn't apply, finally went to control panel and forced them manually. Looks like the.net patches were the problem. Basically my machine was unusable for about an hour. Probably could have fixed it quicker, but I was doing other things and not really paying attention until the third or fourth reboot.
I agree, if a friend can't play one of your games while you play another, it's not much of a sharing system. I like your idea about one account per game. Actually, I hate it, but it's about the only way to get around Steam's policy. I'm generally pretty happy with Steam, but this ranks a big "meh".
Calling two very different products by the same name is incredibly stupid and confusing, and dropping "RT" does nothing to address the issue. Apple makes it almost impossible to confuse their Mac and iOS products, MS deserves to be bashed for failing to do so even on their second attempt. And the Windows 8/8.1 "F*ck U, no Start menu" debacle has hardly earned them any good will.
Having two incompatible devices both called Surface was bad enough, but at least you could ask a clueless user or sales drone if they had a Pro or an RT. Who the hell is in charge of marketing these things?
that was on its last legs. He could do anything he wanted because the company had little to lose. MS is still an 800 pound gorilla with a byzantine bureaucracy, turning that ship is a Herculean task. Of course, with their cash and income streams they're not close to being dead yet, so there's more time and room for error. But their failure to admit their mistake with Metro does not bode well, a culture of denial doesn't breed success.
I recently got to watch a MS rep doing a presentation about the awesomeness of Win8, and he really seemed to believe it was all that. The Redmond campus can be quite a bubble. I recently switched to Mac, and there are things I miss from Win7...most of which have been tossed in Win8. I still use a lot of MS products because our enterprise uses a lot of MS, and there are some solid reasons for that. But talking about the "MS experience" for an individual user...it's just not there.
..but have my doubts. Our local paper just abandoned their building for much smaller digs. I appreciate their local coverage, but I know their circulation and revenue are way down. I agree there's a need for local reporting, but am not sure how it will be paid for.
Microsoft is a huge company with vast resources, the notion that they have to "prioritize" something because they can only do a couple things at a time is nonsense. Windows phone doesn't suck because Windows desktop has priority. By that logic, Windows 8 should be awesome....I know, stop laughing! Windows phone sucks for the same reason Windows 8 sucks: Microsoft has a hard time making non-sucky products, for a variety of reasons that are very hard to change in such a large bureaucracy.
The "Touchpad Strategy" didn't even save the Touchpad, it just cleared out inventory. It's not a bad way to go when you're throwing in the towel and trying to cut your losses, but you're not "saving" anything, other than a few bucks.
Crazy cheap and simple to install, keeps light down low where it won't bother your neighbors. Walmart had some for 79 cents each the other day. And zero impact on your electric bill.
can't recommend it. I have a friend who's looking for a tablet, I can pick up an RT for him for $199. Won't do it, because at some point he's going to want to install some Windows app on it and he'll be pissed at me when he can't. Apple did a good job of marketing the iPad as a fat phone rather than a thin laptop, people get it. MS can't pull that off because nobody has or wants Windows phones, so they don't "get" what the RT is supposed to be. And making two devices called "Surface" that run different OS's isn't helping, nice going geniuses.

I've been running a 5670 for a couple years. Other than some minor glitches in Skyrim, no issues.
if their tablet OS wasn't sitting on millions of desktops that I and thousands of others have to support. *ouch*

Nickelback fans beware!

that the same folks who are pro-nuclear also tend to be anti-regulation. That's a hell of a recipe for disaster.
I know bookmarks are so last century, but they work really well for some us. Chrome could do a better job of letting users manage them.

Won't do squat until you start it.
We'll still have trucking....we just won't have truckers.

If there's been a buzz over 8.1, I've missed it. "Sucks less than 8.0" isn't a great motivator.
The heads have been chopped off, so you have a cylinder with a point on one end. Yay slashdot editors.

make anyone else think of Pesci in Casino? Warning: violent as hell.
