That will certainly look better on a resume for most second jobs than contributing to an open source project (not that that's not a valuable thing to do in your free time).

Otherwise, try a temp agency or something like that with a company that could potentially offer you a long-term job.

    • Walking is not an alternative (too slow and too hot during summer)
    • Public transit is 2 miles from my house then an hour and a half in roughly the wrong direction then a mile and a half walk to my office
    • Bicycling can be done, but I arrive to work hot and sweaty (no showers here) and it's hard to carry my laptop and a change of clothes and shoes (sweaty in a backup)
    • A Sparrow (now NmG) is $25k with limited parts support and unknown problems and battery life, plus getting insurance is still an unknown
    • The ZAP Xebra is close.... but the company is extremely unreliable and the thing is just f-ing ugly and the chinese quality and battery life is a big unknown at this point.
    • A hybrid is just as much hype as the Segway, not delivering near the mileage promised with unknown life expentancy and increased purchase cost over a standard car... and you're still buying from the oil industry.
    • Small diesels (Smart, VW, etc.) are not available here in the US... and Diesel is still controlled by the oil industry and market prices

The Segway (in fact nearly any electric scooter) _almost_ works.... but it still doesn't quite have the speed or the range and the definitive legality in bicycle lanes in every city along my route. I got a chance to use one after knee surgery and it was AMAZING the flexibility and control it gives you. In that regard it _is_ better than a traditional sit-on scooter, but the 3 wheeled version is nearly as good. Assuming they get actual range carrying my weight.

So, smart-alec Segway bashers.... what _real_ alernative have you got for me??

Not to bash your band for the sake of bashing, but I downloaded their entire discography and that was the only song of theirs I enjoyed.

Greenday - "American Idiot" is supposed to be another where the "album" is the attraction. While it does work well together, there's no reason people couldn't just download "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "When Septembet Ends" because that's what they're heard ont he radio.

Best thing I like about Tivo is being able to get at the data I'm recording. Not to sound like an open source zealot (it pains me to agree with them), but a closed system will just make me feel locked in and limited.

I would like multiple outputs like some of the DishPVRs have. Although if HMO is quick enough over wireless (doubt it will be even with MPEG4) I could survive.

I think Nokia got the concept, design, and price right... they just missed on the keyboard and the application & connectivity reliability. 22. Re:But how do you get material in? on More Linux Portable Media Players On The Way · · Score: 1

That is the fundamental problem of these devices. I currently own the old Archos Multimedia 20 and while it does an admirable job of playing videos, it is very specific about what it will play and requires the resolution to be drastically reduced to fit its screensize. Unfortunately, that resolution is something you would never use on a computer or on VCDs, so you effectively have two or three copies of every movie. Archos' answer is to use their PVR plug-in module, but the frame rate and quality on that is aweful at best. The Tivo/DVD Player -> PMP sync is the critical part of the equation and the one the MPAA want to prevent the most. I haven't been able to see Tivo's new "transfer to laptop" option, but if PMPs can be made to play those files we're half way there. Phase 2 is the ability to purchase and download episodes of shows and movies from the media companies websites. Even if it has to go to the Tivo first (using a service they provide?) that would be fine for now. --D

    Loading the content!

I have the older Archos JBMM20, and it's a wonderful machine despite its quirks and lousy firmware and small screen. However, the biggest pain in the ass is converting my downloaded video clips into the resolution and codec that it needs to play. It's a slow and tedious process.

Now, my brother has a DirecTivo set to dump to his NetApp drive array. My UltimateTV can't do that, and even if it could... I'd have to convert those videos to put them on my Archos anyway.

Same goes for DVDs. To rip a DVD I legally own, to use on my own portable hardware, I have to pay for some [possibly illegal] software and deal with the frustrations of getting those to work right.

What is needed is a play-any-content, tightly integrated to video-on-demand services and all of the other video-related hardware in my house. Of course, Disney (Michael Eisner is the devil) is fundamentally opposed to that view of the world. While you're at it, why not allow me to stream the videos on my device (no hard drive) from my central server over Wifi or ?
