I was playing dominoes on games.yahoo.com just last night - on mozilla 1.0
I had a lot of trouble installing java on moz 0.9.8 a while ago, but when I did a full reinstall with 1.0 it went without a hitch, installed, and runs absolutely perfectly...
It would seem sensible to me for there to be a law or summin requiring all companies who release papers like these - which are MENT to give an impartial view - are they not? to provide disclaimers which list the interests that the company has which may conflict with a truely impartial view on the paper
like...
This is a paper examining the pitfalls of OSS - it was written with extensive feedback from Microsoft, who also sponsored this paper
I have seen several opt in schemes which have tricked users into opting in, or have been fraudulantly opted in, and its then a pain in the backside to opt out again...
Is it gonna be mandatory that if someone wants to get away from something they opted in to that they can quickly and easily?
microsoft have already used the lack of ability to test things in all combinations as an excuse for not modularising windows, so who knows, maybe the next thing they say is that they only recommend this critical security update for people who have all 5 set to the microsoft option - because thats the only one they tested it with

Yeah, there are differences between banner ads and TV ads - the target audience
the majority of banner ads are seen by people who are among the more intelligent and the more intelligent you are, the less succeptible to ads you are
TV ads are aimed at a much larger group of people and probably have a significantly better take up ratio Also, they are often targetted at the people who are likely to watch the program (like advertising date lines during the late night repeat of buffy to catch those 20 year old single men)
Perhaps TV ads arent as effective as some people think, they certainly do do a lot

I was wondering why more companies dont utilise P2P downloading to distribute their applications - like KDE here
While the servers may have been able to cope with the number of downloads in this case, there have been others where they have not
Why arent the kernel / distros / KDE / Gnome / etc, etc, etc released (even over a custom network) where P2P sharing can be used? This would also be useful if some of the mirrors were less used than others - might make them last longer
Am I the only one who is aware of the linux kit for the PS2?
imo, that is the way to go those who want a linux console can get it right with the ps2 linux kit - and then there are (potentially) lots of games which are suitable for consoles which run on linux
There are better ways to give a meaningful and better customer side service other than impose a 3 GB soft limit per month
Have soft limits set up per day, and have them set higher (or, atleast, offer a higher package) so after 500mb of transfer, the upload and download drop to a 56k modem - not 28k although this goes against the whole benefit of having broadband - I can quite easily see a lawsuit / oftel type thing telling them to stop calling it broadband if they restrict it to narrowband after a certain amount of transfer
I know that some companies have problems with the cost to them of supporting their broadband customers - hence these restrictions - however, I believe it IS possible to get it right, in a way that is fair to consumers yet still profitable to the companies
Who's fault is it that consumers do not wish to view the adverts? tivo and replay are providing the consumers with a service which allows them to choose what they do and dont watch If I dont want to watch ads, no one can make me
If someone came up with an amazing device to sift all of the mail ads that you recieve as they fall through the letterbox, would they get this same treatment?
In most countries, there are services which prevent direct marketing calls to your phone, for people who dont want cold calling and the like The same thing for SMS spam Email isnt there yet, but it wouldnt supprise me if it was
So, if a consumer can choose whether they recieve ads via phone, sms, mail (there are some services to prevent you getting ads via mail I believe) - why shouldnt they be able to choose whether they recieve the TV ads too?
The judge isn't supposed to punish Microsoft for breaking anti-trust law; she's supposed to impose a remedy that will "undo" the damage that has been done.
Isnt that like saying "yes, you were a bad boy, but if you promise not to break the law again I'll let you go"
and I always thought that laws were there to give a mechanism to punish those who did wrong... to persuade them, and others, that its not such a hot idea to break the law
not just remedy the situation
Theif: Yeah, I stole a car
Judge: Well, to "rememdy" the situation, give it back with a full tank of petrol and all is forgiven
During the KaZaA client update, users will be able to opt out of the Altnet service, the spokesperson says
So maybe they did listen to everyone after all? I await to see what "warnings" are given and how easy the opt out is...
Thinking of this - I have a question
How does altnet know what is "unused" in bandwidth terms?
as far as I was aware there was no prioritising in the windows tcp/ip stack where by one application does not get any bandwidth while others wish to use it
That would imply to me that they will just use ANY bandwidth they can - not just "un-used bandwidth"...
that kazaa is moving ahead with these plans I am sure that they know how bad PR it is
Just checking, I use kazaa lite - is that part of this altnet network? I hope not:)

Companies appear to be using more and more dodgy ways to make money from us
Spyware for targetted ads... Scumware for stealing our resources... using exploits to do whatever they like
whats next? deleting competitors software? (or even worse, dissabling it/making it give incorrect results in such a way that the user doesnt know its been tampered with) Installing backdoors so they can verify that your not using their software illegaly?
I feel increasingly that we, the consumers, need to have some sort of protected from spyware, scumware, companies who exploit security problems and the next generation of click through "but you signed your kidneys over to microsoft when you bought office!"
This is a good idea in principle... were it not for the fact that its illegal
The main problem with email viruses is that their not defendable against (when the victim is using outlook) without an external program checking each and every email that comes in
Remove one infection and its all in vain 'cause you get another 4 the next day
Some whitehats ARE doing that for exploits - securing peoples boxes after exploiting them and then logging out without installing any rootkits - but its not really feasable for outlook viruses
I use outlook I have done for many years I like the interface, its easy to use, and I'm used to it
However, in the past few months I have been recieving more and more viruses and it has seriously made me reconsider my position... Last week alone my virus scanner blocked atleast 50 virus infected emails
I never open attachments, I have the preview pane turned off, I have outlook set to use the restricted zone for emails, I have norton scanning every email I get - but just yesturday I got an email informing me that I'd sent an infected mail out...
I will almost certainly be moving away from outlook within the next week just to get away from it all

maybe if there are more votes for the bug the dev team will realise they cant ship 1.0 with it in
