I completely agree. As many bad client side java and tomcat projects as I have inherited I would looks for something else. Bad or no error messages (does it really take 50 lines to say which class failed). Can be slow if run interpreted so it can almost be multi-platform. I just don't see the appeal of java. Find something else that one of best in the business uses (like Google uses Python)

The telcom immunity blocks civil suits from being made. To be honest, I fully expect the telcos to let a couple of their employee sheep to get locked up in criminal trials with out even shedding a tear. However, if you hit the telcos with a $200 billion civil judgment for their bad behavior (and make sure they cannot weasel out of it) they will think twice before doing it again. No civil trials now. That is why Obama's vote for FISA and telecom immunity was so bad.

Seems like toll roads are just a waste of time, resources, and money. I hope more people continue to hack these systems and it becomes such a pain in the ass to keep them running that they start shutting them down and the companies that lobby the local governments go out of business. They could accomplish the same infrastructure with a gas tax and it would be less intrusive and more effective. Nobody wants more taxes, but it is really the best way to pay for these projects.

Yea, they even have lobbyists to make sure they get more prisons built. They are all about making money. There was an immigration prison in Texas that got shut down recently, because they were locking up whole families and not allowing access by lawyers so they could make a profit on each member of the family whether they could legally hold them or not.

Also, you may have lower intersection accidents from running red lights, but you will replace those with people slamming on their breaks trying to stop from going through a yellow light, because they are not sure if they are going to get a ticket. If they were really concerned about safety, they would just make yellow lights longer and that costs almost nothing.

If they want to seize my laptop for no reason because I am trying to travel, I have a problem.

I like the idea of having a fly at your own risk airline where you can just "risk it" and not have all these so called "protections". I bet it would put the airlines with the TSA out of business in a week.

Interesting to see Perl comparisons to C# or other languages that I would not consider to be replacements. I have always thought about software languages like tools in the toolbox and perl has always been a good language for processing text. If people are trying to use it for cad or who knows what else I have no sympathy for them. I have seen poorly written programs in every language and perl's text processing power puts it on par with doing stupid things in ANSI c pointers if you don't know what you are doing. You are never going to have power and idiot proof coding in the same language without sacrificing speed, leaky abstractions (look that up) or something else.
