  1. Re:I do see a point to doing this on Computers Replace Musicians In West End Musical · · Score: 1

The seem to be doing it everywhere, so no matter where you talk about it's happening. I also believe that the musicians went on strike awhile back to stop this from happening in NYC, perhaps the same will happen in London.

  2. I do see a point to doing this on Computers Replace Musicians In West End Musical · · Score: 1

Since pretty much all the well known musicals today are found in New York City on Broadway. This presents a problem because people aren't going to New York as much as they use to due to terrorism concerns. Some musicals had to close because no one was going to NYC. I don't know if the audience numbers have returned to pre-Sept 11th levels or not, but saving a little money can be helpful. However, it really does ruin the experiance, sure the music may be accurate everytime, but I think that the a real musician is a hell of a lot better because he or she can add a whole lot more to the music than prerecorded music can.

  3. $50 a game on Delays Hurt Video Game Business · · Score: 1

young buyers have to take the time to squirrel away $50 for a typical purchase.

You make it sound like it's so terrible. Even though development costs have risen drastically for a game, especially ones that are based off a franchise like Star Trek(where they have to hire the actors for the voices), and piracy has risen drastically over the years with the introduction of broadband, the game still only costs $50. Infact game prices actually went down. I remember Star Trek Judgement Rites was $70. PC Gamer had a breakdown of where your money goes, some of it foots the bill of the piraters. Some goes to the devs, some goes to advertising, and some will go to paying the retail outlets for space to put up those big displays. I usually wouldn't bother with something like this, but people make out like $50 is too much.

Seriously, why not just take the cash and give it to the people who would have been employed there, and cut out the AMD middleman?

It's obvious, just giving the money to the people shows people that they do not have to work, and the government will just give them money. Atleast with this they are more productive then just sitting at home and watching television and getting fat. I believe that Germany's obese population is going to double within the next 10 years and just giving them money will not help it.

It is really hard to get into the gaming industry, my brother knows a guy who now makes maps for a living. He was involved in American McGee's Alice. He also worked in Ritual, Rogue, and Gearbox. I think he was also working on Counterstrike:CZ, but go canned when they stopped developement, which is another issue all on it's own. This guy who I'm not mentioning names, only got a job in the industry because John Carmack played his map.

Another issue is job security, you have to make your own, but then again pretty much in every job today you have some degree of doing that. However, even if you have made your job security there is nothing that can protect you from being laid off when you finish the game your working on(ie Ritual employees after Elite Force 2). Those people were quickly hired by others but I don't know if you want to be moving around so much.

So to wrap things up, you better be good at what you do, you better have a contact in the industry, or hope someone recognizes you. Lastly, your going to always run the risk of being let go and have to move somewhere else.

It's nice to see though OEMs are trying to pull away from Microsoft, it may be a slow process but still it will eventually happen, the only problem is Microsoft may pull a fast one the OEMs saying the must ship Windows. However it seems unlikely because someone will pick up on it and since it's pretty much anti-trust, and something tells me the OEMs will just not renew their agreements, hopefully the majority won't renew, and they will start selling Linux by default. That's some wishful thinking right now though, but it might happen.

I can see Microsoft inside being anti-Linux, people usually hate and fear what they don't understand.

What Microsoft is thinking about this, IBM is one of the largest players in the computing field and something like this is sure to catch Linux/IBM's competitor. Doing something like this shows that IBM stands behind the product they support 100%(Remember that commercial with Avery Brooks). IBM will probably be doing some tweaking to the desktop and will probably send the changes back to the respected projects, and that will be good for everyone.

  25. Game Cube isn't that bad on Nintendo - Stodgy, Not-So-Super Mario? · · Score: 1

For $99 now, it's a good deal. My younger brother just got one for Christmas, and it game with a game, well many games when you think about it, The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition(Original Zelda, through Majora's Mask, and the demo of the newest one). For the price it beats both X-BOX and PS2, and you won't find SuperMario or Zelda on either of those, and those are two characters, I grew up with playing as. It's very unlikely that Nintendo will be going away anytime soon. Nintendo's sales have increased since the price cut, and their marketshare is about 37 percent of the market for consoles(atleast that's what they claim).
