How many companies are really driven by passion? Yes there are some but they are very rare. Most live quarter-by-quarter trying to pump up their share price. They do this by following the latest Wall St fashions. Right-sizing, diversifying, refocussing, out sourcing... In that context, passion is a meaningless emotion.

Schools have been going to the career path idea for earlier ages, but it just hasn't been implied.

Case in point: my dad has taught middle school for close to 20 years now. He was always the technology elective. That's fine, but here's the kicker: they've changed the curriculum to pre-engineering. They're trying to make a middle school into a magnet for engineering kids. All this while PE and art go down the drain.

    From xkcd http://xkcd.com/137/:

The infinite possibilities each day holds should stagger the mind. The sheer number of experiences I could have is uncountable, breathtaking, and I'm sitting here refreshing my inbox. We live trapped in loops, reliving a few days over and over, and we envision only a handful of paths laid out ahead of us. We see the same things each day, we respond the same way, we think the same thoughts, each day a slight variation on the last, every moment smoothly following the gentle curves of societal norms. We act like if we just get through today, tomorrow our dreams will come back to us.

And no, I don't have all the answers. I don't know how to jolt myself into seeing what each moment could become. But I do know one thing: the solution doesn't involve watering down my every little idea and creative impulse for the sake of someday easing my fit into a mold. It doesn't involve constantly holding back for fear of shaking things up.

This is very important, so I want to say it as clearly as I can: Fuck. That. Shit.

  12. Tech/Business Overlap on Why Vista Took So Long · · Score: 1

Reading the comments posted before me, it seems that many have a guru-like insight into how a business runs and operates. To me, that seems like the pointy-haired boss telling you how to code. There are very few people out there that can adequately bridge the tech-business gap. It's been my humble observation that well-run business are independent of the technology they have. That's doesn't mean that technology is important; however, if you start a business with only a revolutionary technology as your asset, most times it won't work (think: dot-com). As cliche as it is, company's assets are the people. If you have the right people in the right place when the technology becomes available, then your company can accelerate much faster regardless of what beaurecratic measures lay in front of you. Bring this idea back to the case study: Microsoft, although still in a strong growth phase, is most likely approaching a saturation point. If the talent available in the company is strong enough, it will find ways to work around this plateau; however, if the pool has become diluted and all the talent is being taken from the company (Google?) then the profit centers will stagnate.

  13. Re:Engineer Graduates first hand on U.S. Engineers Undercounted · · Score: 1

Most of this has to do with horrible advisors in my opinion. They don't give or offer much direction in 4 year state schools. Instead students are left to figure it out on their own and that means they don't always pick exactly what gets them out of there the fastest. Keep in mind people are switching majors a lot more these days too.

    Not True

It seems that college students, as well as the media, tend to fix the blame of their own problems onto the administration, etc. I am a junior at a major public university. There is no horrible advising problem; rather, undergraduates choose not to take the initiative to find their advisors (freshmen are required to see their advisors the first year). Students are not left to figure it out on their own. If they want help, they can go find it. The same applies with financial aid, residency, and any sort of paperwork. The help is there -- kids are lazy.
