I have been using this mouse for over two years, and there is no stupit tilting or rolling required, you just sliiide your finger a bit. (Sorry for the PDF link, there was no other decent picture to be found.)
Contrary to what most users say, for me gentoo is great not because of speed (though it's definitely not slower than others), but because of skipping of dependencies.
Linking against only stuff I have (installed) or want (USE flags) is IMHO a great advantage over binary distros, who have to link against everything and the kitchen sink in order to fulfill arbitrary consumer needs.
This may make gentoo binaries faster, quite possible, it definitely gives a nice feeling to see an emerge "actively" NOT linking against alsa, or X11, or libgnome||kdelibs if you specified you will not use it.
There are other reasons why gentoo is great (forums, anyone?), but this is the main reason for me.
You know what? Give me some "blank space" on the map along with the right ot found a new society there and I will create a place where labour is free. I know enough people both "thechnology enabled" and fed up with "capitalist" approach to tech usage to makethis at least imaginable.
In order to reduce bandwidth usage of both the Slashdot infrastructure and Slashdot readers' internet conections, when replying to articles covering anything legalese, just leave out the ubiquitous "IANAL, but", and only in case you are a lawyer, use "IAL, therefore" or "IAL, hencewith".
Thank you.

It's about as ugly as FVWM, but it has an American-sounding name and features Warner Brothers cartoons on the screenshot.
It is also inspired by a long-forgotten Conputer OS built by those effing Pearl-Harbor bombing Japanese, but the went out of Business (Ha) because of their bad Marketing Dept.
I dunno maybe Flash just sucks? Why don't you ask why so many websites are shoving useless Flash animations down our throats? I end up killing Flash on 99% of websites I visit because it ends up just getting in the way.
Maybe this can help in liking flash a bit more? The only limit is yourself! (And Opera 7)

I agree the benefits from optimized compiles are mostly negligible. The performance benefit comes from the linked libraries.
Binary distributions have to link everything and the kitchen sink (sorry for stressing that old quip again) into their packages in order to satisfy a boad customer spectrum.
Compiling from source keeps that configurable, and with gentoo's system it even becomes automated.

For example, I could never compile my own kernel under SuSE. For some reason, I could never get it right. All I would get is a near-endless stream of agony out of the boot console, then the whole thing dying in a kernel panic. Not so in Gentoo. Gentoo makes it easy to get a new kernel going, and to try out different versions.
I don't see how a distribution can alter the success or failure of kernel compiles. Either you compile in everything you need, or the thing panics. I doubt SuSE ships glibc or gcc versions which break kernels (RedHat did for a while, but worked around).

Oh so your Heritage is a Registered Trademark eh?
Anyone else strike this strange?

Commencing countdown to first occurrence of lame "Double Dragon"(TM) joke in reference to SMP setups.
Anyone else read "download spiral" in the subject?

all right, mod me Troll.
If you had spent just two seconds thinking about it "insightful" would have benn more appropriate, if any.
and as long the games are only developed for windows, there will never be a linux market for them.
I say there is already one.
Yea, its generally my policy to avoid using the words Gates and G-d in the same sentence.
What about: "God help us, Gates is more powerful than the President!"
Frankly, I find the usage of "God" and "the President" in the same sentence much more frightening. Unfortunately, it is much more common though.

I agree with your post in general, I just giggled at the relations.
I think Gimp / Photoshop >> than Blender / Maya (if you catch my drift).
And Gimp has much better chances of ever reaching Photoshop than Blender to reach Maya.
Blender.org is gonna release a new version?
You gotta be kidding.
I thought they were gonna go the ways of xmms and the gimp and the dodo: famous, cute, but dead.
(Yeah I might be trolling a bit, but at least I didn't throw in BSD as well...)
Like Gimp is to Photoshop, Blender is to Maya.
AAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAAAAHAHAHA!
I like blender but this is hilarious.
Have you ever even *glimpsed* at the things Maya can do?
Who the fuck are the four people who modded this funny?
Not only is it a weak joke, it's a joke about people getting killed.
But I guess that's OK as long as it's not people working in the WTC, right?
Why don't you try AmiWM

o yeah? which one?
noooo.
I am a big fan, but the gentoo logo is just plain ugly. Larry the Cow is a bit better, but still no beauty.
