I think it would be great if like you said Games Workshop came over, and gave the thumbs down. It's really weird how most companies shove things out the door so fast. I do specialized app development for many different clients, and every single one of them has always delayed launch to make us perfect and add features, despite their loss. Why is it with games it is an opposite world where things get pushed out the door? This may be proof that companies do not look at games as actual products, but something else.
All Sony has to do is remake FF7 with graphics comparable to Advent Children, like their tech demo was, and that will drive people in. People don't remember, but it was FF7 that saved the PS1's butt. No, it wasn't Tomb Raider. FF7 was actually a new dimension in RPGs in a LOT of ways. People wanted to experience it. THAT is what is needed. RPGs are perfect for selling consoles because they bring an experience, world, graphics, music, etc. Even if people barely play the first 20 minutes, as I KNOW a majority of gamers do for most of their games, that 20 minutes can make a person fall in love with a system. I hated the PS1. Then I played the FF7 demo...then I had to buy it. I think MS was hoping this with BlueDragon. I played the demo, and have interest in it, but I didn't rush out to buy it. Demo makers make a big mistake by just showing a little bit of game play. You have to have a James Bond intro, small thing turns big..fast. Leaving you wanting more..in just 10 minutes. In a demo, I don't want to just test out a little dabble of this and that. What was I saying again?
I would also just like to add to this comment that soft shadows are available in DX9, but mostly in Nvidia cards at first, and at certain resolutions. I think as we saw in dx10.1, that MS is now forcing card makers to provide all features? This would be good since I wouldn't have to compare cards just to find out what features of DX are not supported.
At our campus, we had a similar problem, however, it was more perplexing. We found traffic to increase at night, so we simply turn it off at night, and that solved our problem.
Having almost every game come out for every system is what is killing the high priced consoles like PS3. While Sony might be wise in trying to advertise the uniqueness of the PS3, they are also driving away gamers in a way as they will not view the PS3 as a console to play games. The Blu-Ray market is far smaller than the gamer market.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I remember the opening to UO having the globe that was UO being shattered into many pieces that each had the same world in it, thus the invention of shards? Or was this a common practice in other MMOs before it? I guess MUDs that ran the same rule set could have been thought of as shards, but then different people were running them. Of course technically I understand the concept, I am just talking about the term 'shard'.
As with any college, one plus of going to one is that recruiters visit them first. Right out of college you can't expect to placed in a high position, but when you are hired by a direct recruiter, it is generally at a better starting position than applying to the company directly. This is also due in part to ties between teachers and the companies. It is also fact that recruiters go to colleges first before making jog openings public. The next step is that recruiters go to places that provide the skills they need. I had recruiters from IBM and such come to my college. Game companies go to these game colleges. Lastly, I agree that a game college should be an extension of a regular education.
Rockstar makes anything good besides GTA? Let's see, there was "Red Dead Revolver" (no), that ping pong game (no), Bully (meh).. Manhunt was decent (hmm). Do they mean a "Rockstar" developed game, or distributed? While "Midnight Club" is pretty popular, I doubt people would be excited about an exclusive racing game. Besides PS3 already has Grand Torismo. Rockstar would have to pull something totally original, away from the sim slasher realm, to make this of any importance.
I had this mental image of a an explosion growing as I read your reply. Bravo! I am not trying to change your opinion of Hillary, and I agree we need a change. My question to you is: when did you discover we need a change, and at what points in your life you felt this way? When you pinpoint the ways we need change, find out what laws cause that reason and who made them, and who is against them, and what solutions they bring to the table.
I was in line for my Wii. I am here in Austin, TX. There is this guy behind me, and in conversation, he says he knows Gariot, and had dinner with him. Among the conversation, the best line of all, was him saying 'He is having trouble with his new house as the draw bridge is having architectual problems over his moat'. Now, I drive down 360 everyday on the way to work, and I can see what I think is his new castle up on the hill, it might be his old. And it is HUGE! I have no idea where his funding is coming from, but I always respect the guy, because I have finished more of his RPGs than any others. Him and Carmack.
Sounds like you have been listening to Dole too much and also didn't read her book. I also don't see the relationship of her laws putting responsibility on the seller as her trying to be your mother. Sounds more like you have an issue with her being a woman than anything else. You must not realize that other senators, and our president, are doing very bad things if you are worried about her so much.
You would prefer the game company be punished like they are now? People have a freedom to sue others, which is good and bad. Her ratings laws helps protect the game makers by putting the responsibility in the seller's lap, which is where it should be. It doesn't 'allow' anyone to do anything. It just controls what people are already able to do so their actions go in the right direction. As Adams said, if people were angles, we would not need laws to govern them.
Just to let you know, Hillary is for enforcing game ratings, not stopping games from being made. That means if a retailer sells an AO game to a minor, her laws would make the retailer responsible, not the game maker. Her laws are good, and far different than what Thompson is doing. Nintendo and Sony not distributing AO games is also an entirely different matter not associated with Hillary.
Another 500k DS units sold?! Doesn't everyone have one yet, or are people buying two or three for themselves? Also, an increase in Wii sales simply means Nintendo has shipped 13% more stock now than before. That percent increase in Wii is directly proportional to the output of their factories at this time.
A lot of you really do not know what Japanese TV really means. My wife is Japanese, and I lived there several years while going to animation school. I spent many a' day doing my home work while trying to find something to watch on TV (I was doing contract programming from home/bar). Let me tell you this...there is NOTHING of interest on TV before 7 or 8 at night. NOTHING! Don't make me repeat that. Oh wait...at around 2:00 there are old Samurai movies that have some nudity in them....
I see where you are coming from, but I like to play what is new. I kind of used to be like that, but ~$350 for a new system is not much, especially since it lasts four or more years. If I know I will get it later, I say go ahead and get it now. You may have saved $100 by waiting a year or two, but those years of having the newest system are worth the money. Enjoy life. I don't care about the price of the PS3, there just isn't any games out for it...yet.
My 360 went bad, but the return process MS has setup is so painless and quick (same week deliver and return), it didn't bother me. My Wii and 360 together cover all assets of console gaming, and I love them both. I would get a PS3, but all the good games for it are also out on the 360, so I don't see a reason yet. I can see how all the news of tech problems could deter someone from getting one, but if they are mild to high level console player, they are really missing out.
"kill bill" got by without getting a tougher rating by turning its bloodiest scene into black and white. Manhunt should do the same at bloody times if parental control is on, or something like that. If I remember correctly, Mortal Kombat for the arcade had a setting where the blood could be green or red too. The Wii has a global parental control on it, so as long as parents take control, just like cable, then there isn't a problem. I don't blame Sony or Nintendo for saying no, it is too much of a hassle getting sued. People like Clinton are trying to get these laws passed so Sony or the game makers can not get sued, and for some reason people hate her for it. Too many double standards right now.
I think the reason they made the trailer, and made such a big fuss that it was done in engine, was to show that they are capable of making the Fallout world in 3D. The funny part, at least to me, is they got the greenish-gray hue the first two games had. The thing is, the first two games did that most likely because of lack of a bigger palette. Still looks good, and I think they got at least the looks down. Graphics capabilities will change in a year and half though.
If you are in need of a gaming fix, and found FreeBSD to limit them, have you ever thought of putting together a cheap box to run an old version of Windows that supports all the game you want to play? I am sure you have reason to run FreeBSD as your primary OS, but I always read how people spend so much time trying to get their favorite games running on other OSs. It might be as simple as they don't have legal copies of Windows, etc... however, just a question. Not trying to stir trouble or anything.
I thought all the VC games were supposed to be down around $3. I payed like $8 for SOTN on the 360, so something like TMNT should be $2. How much are the other games generally on the VC?

Any straight man who enjoys staring another man's arse for X hours a day is not straight. THAT is why I play a woman in MMORPGs.

Why am I arguing with you?! Because I am an idiot and not a politicion...wait..what does that mean?

I always thought I sucked at FPS games because I sucked. Now I know it is because the other players are cheating. Man, I knew something was up!
