I agree that once you buy the extras it cost the same or more than a PS3. The difference is I don't need those extras, and I have the option. I still saved $200 (actually more because I got 20% off through Dell) and I have a next gen unit that has Halo, GoW, will get GTA4, and can even play SOTN. You make an interesting point, but your point plays in the 360's favor, not against it.
Well, the Neo Geo was an extremely expensive machine for its time also. I would almost compare it with the PS3 in terms of features, price and era. Look how well it did. It had a rabid, but extremely small, fanbase. As long as Sony is confortable with that, then everything is dandy. Now granted, the console buying market has grown a lot since then. But still, of all the game fanatic friends I know, who have multiple consoles, only one had a Neo Geo.
I think it is incredible the PS2 is selling so well. I think this is due to the shortage of Wii, over price of PS3, and the 360 already being out a year and not considered 'new'. I love seeing the 360 still selling so well. I really do think the Wii and 360/Ps3 are for a different sets of people that can overlap, but do not contend. The 360 will also continue to outsell the Ps3 until it gets more unique titles that makes the price worthwhile. GTA4, Stranglehold, etc, are all coming out for the 360 also, not to mention other blockbusters like Halo3 and GoW. Until that changes, the Ps3 will never break through, price drop or not.
I loath, hate and despise gamespy. However, the reasons I hate them hopefully only apply to pc games, and that is first their crappy app some games force you to use, and secondly, having to log into their service, and downloading tons of patches to make the damn thing work right.
Someone else here wrote the DS network already uses Gamespy, but I haven't tried it yet. I am hoping Nintendo is stopping them for letting their slacker attitude come through. I still hate the idea that they will have a hand in the Wii online portion and I already vowed never to play PC games that require them. I haven't been able to fine a Wii yet, but I am going to have to consider if I really want to support them in any way. It just really sucks because I actually want a Wii.
I think the writer makes a good point. Why play old Nintendo game when you can find simple, as much as addicting, and multiplayer games on Live? I myself have not signed up for the Gold membership, and didn't think much about those games on Live. However, after seeing this point, I have to ask myself why would I want to play Mario brothers again? I have already been there and done that. Still want a Wii though, and love my 360.
This would be all true and believable if it weren't for the fact that airlines stopped serving peanuts on flights a few years ago due to allergy complaints. If you have had peanuts served to you lately, let me know what airline it was because I miss them!
I totally agree. I only tell people about this just to see the culture shock they go through. Even at my 'day job' we are working with a major Japanese client, and they found our non-component approach interesting. The people they sent over here to work with us were never part of the components they came over to support. Totally ridiculous. Between this, and having worked over there several years doing contract work, it amazes me that they are able to make what they do. They are good, smart people, and I hate seeing them treated as a lesser meat, but that is why they are termed 'penguins'. I could go on, but I am getting off topic enough as it is.
But that is how most Japanese companies work. When you interview for a job, you don't interview for a position, but rather for the company. In every major company (Canon, Fuji, Nissan, etc), this holds true, and you may be an accountant one year, and doing programming the next.
There are also reports that Quake 2 and other games that came out over a year ago will look just as good on the PS3 as it does on PCs!
Seriously, I think people are missing a major point that seeing a console optimized game that is ported from other systems. This is actually a promising look for the PS3's future. While I own a 360, and want a Wii, I do hope the PS3 lives because I still hope for a new version of FF7.
A friend of mine also creates board and card games. As mentioned before, the first thing you do is test the hell out of it. Have friends over constantly, and play the game. Then make a pretty good prototype.
Post at sites like http://www.iwanttomakeit.com/ that you are looking for piece/board/instructions makers. Once you have some prototypes, go by your local game stores and see if they will sell it in their stores. Leave a copy of the prototype if you want (make them sign a DBA if you haven't done any copyrights and such), and let them play it, or sell it. There are also companies for $500 or so that will evaluate your game. They are mostly bull, but they give their viewpoint in terms of how major publishers see it, so you can make changes before pitching your game. Finally go to the major publishers. Tell them about all the positive experiences you had. Most important: Don't give up!
It was mainly Nintendo, and the Ultra 64, I mean Nintendo 64, that pushed for live action cut scenes versus all the pre-rendered junk we got on the PS1 and PCs. This of course was brought on by the lack of space in the carts. The problem is if the 360 starts getting PS1 ports, even 250MB will not be enough
I also agree the Wiimote would be good, but it's futile to yell a game is on the wrong system. You need to get the system that has the most games you want to for it(360). Not get a system you want and hope games come out for it(Wii).
oh great! Now people are using a public created site as official sources. Can't wiki be updated by anyone? I could write a fake article, and get it posted there. Wiki should be taken with a grain of salt. Other major publications, the ones that make money at least, at least have earnings to worry about to provoke somewhat of a fact check. When I see an article quote wiki, I just move on. I like wiki and everything, but it is for 'amusement only'.
There is a difference between multi-threading, and having multi-processing. People think it is just as easy as assigning a thread to a processor, and away it goes. In reality it should be that easy, but it's not. Just take a gander at any multi-processing book and you will see that almost all multi-processor setups are logn for speed and effeciency. This means you get big boosts for the first couple of added processors, but the more you add, the more complexity gets included (sharing instructions, memory, etc), and the effeciency levels off. Now, since this Cell processor is new, perhaps IBM and Sony have pulled some miracle when it comes to multi-processing, and it makes this point moot, but it once again falls onto the programmer/os/and tools in how it creates the machine language.
Midway has already put out several collections that include those games. I believe they are out for PS2 and Cube, so if the PS3 and Wii are backwards compatible, I don't understand why people are excited about titles like Guantlet 2 and Rampage since you can already get them for your system, and not waste HD space.
I love retro gaming on my new 360, and can't wait to get the other systems, but if they are in a collection, I opt for that. The only problem with the 360 is its crappy compatibility, but I heard the Wii and PS3 are really good about that making those collections even more worth while in my opionion.
it was weird because of my children, I don't get to play at all at night, so when I wake up early, I might be able to get an hour or two. This always seemed to happen on a Tuesday, and they were always off line for maintenance. I was probably just lucky, but it seemed to happen a lot, and was frustrating since they didn't come back online until after I left for work. Anyway, I stopped playing again for awhile, but I am glad they are doing away with the six hour schedules.
I am going to have to disagree on the Wii having a better line up. The only good game for it is Zelda, and you can get that, with the same graphics, for the GameCube. Wiisports might be intertaining, but it is extremely flat, and just distracts you from the lack of other games. I have more games for my 360 already that I am enjoying than I did for my XBox and GameCube (GoW, DeadRising, DOA4, Xtreme2,etc).
I seriously doubt, but hope it is, it is as easy as being able to create a thread and tell it which processor to use. If having all the cores is even remotely the same as programming for parallel processing, then it is an extremely difficult task with diminishing results (just do some research on parallel processing if you don't believe me).
Doesn't matter how many threads or processors you dedicate to the AI if the AI code sucks. In shooters, there is an extreme finite amout of possibilities and space for the entities to act in, compared to something like spore. If you need multiple cores and threads to make your AI act half decent in a shooter, you need to go back to the drawing board.
Games I have that are not supported include: DOA Ultimate, Castlevania (the new 3d one, can't remember the subtitle), Shenmue2, DOA Extreme, Jet Set Radio, Capcom collection. The two that do work are Ninja Gaiden and DOA 3. I do have the silver account, and get updates when available.
The backwards support of the 360 is a huge letdown. It amazes me they even advertise it anywhere as backwards compatible. I can barely play two of my original XBox games. Boo on MS, and I am afraid what PS3 and Wii has in store.
I agree that once you buy the extras it cost the same or more than a PS3. The difference is I don't need those extras, and I have the option. That type of power is needed to compensate for the newer video cards and hard drives.

I am shocked at how many lvl 70s there already are! Then again, maybe I shouldn't be.

Did I read that right? They are making a DS zelda like Wind Waker where you have to travel island to island? NOOOoOoooo!!!11!!

I agree. It sucks when youTube looses revenue on products they didn't even make, pay for, or have the right to redistribute.
