You might want to pay attention before you go off on a rant. A cursory glance at this thread would show you pretty clearly that several people commented on the originating site being down, and a few requests were made for someone to post the full text.
I for one am glad the OP posted this because I am very interested in FC2 and I was really looking forward to reading this article until I found out it was allready/.'ed
How few people here know who SBC is, I mean they are only in 13 states but still, SBC is one of the larget telecom companies in the US.
There are some particularly interesting things to note about this strike (for the record I am one of the replacement workers set to go in to work when they go on strike, alongside alot of out of town SBC managers and some retired SBC workers).
First off, the original strike deadline was set for the 7th of May, for some stupid reason the CWA decided to work through the deadline even though next to NO concessions were made by SBC, thus weakening their position.
Second, as if it didnt seem dumb before, this isnt the first time the CWA tried this tactic, they previously did the same thing at Verizon last year, not suprisingly they ended up getting squeezed on most issues, including a ~$1 billion healthcare package.
Third, the strike is, if you can believe this, a 4 day only strike....to quote a CWA spokesperson "this will show SBC how seriously we are taking this issue."....right....so, to show how serious you are, you worked through one deadline....set another, and then openly told them it would last no more than 4 days....thats serious folks.
Also for what its worth the same spokesperson said the move was only 4 days because they dont want to inflict permanent damage to SBC's business, however at the same time they are mobilizing a carrier switch campaign aimed at persuading SBC's business customers to switch over to AT&T (who does business in 11 of SBC's 13 operating states).
Personally I think the CWA workers have a D@MN good job, and even with the increases laid out in this plan have some excellent healthcare plans....however I feel bad for them because it appears their negotiators have their heads firmly implanted in their rectums.
I honestly wish I could get by without taking this job because while I disagree with the unions I dont neccisarily like the idea of being a replacement worker, but apparently unbeknownst to the CWA workers, the economy sucks and IT jobs are about as scarce as it gets. But either way, as long as I make enough money to keep a roof over my head and they get enough of their demands met, I guess its a win/win.
You are correct sir, SBC does not stand for anything at all anymore. Reason being is "Southwestern Bell didnt want to sound like it was identifying its subsidiaries by region anymore after the consolidation".
Is the nightly builds. It is SO easy to get nightly builds working. You almost never lose any of your settings, just delete the contents of the program directory, download the.zip containing the newest nightly build, plop it in the old folder, and viola, nice spanking new version.:) for that reason this.6 release isn't really a big deal to me!
Or was last years Evil Bit alot funnier than the 50 million crappy unfunny posts?
I REALLY wish they wouldnt have tried to supplement quantity with quality this year.
I don't know about your car but I can tell you exactly why a copied key wont work in my car (2000 Nissan Maxima).
In the key itself is a little tag (not sure if its an RF tag or what) and without a Nissan key from the dealer you can't start the car.
So while you might be able to get the doors open, you wont be getting away with my car.
Now thats not going to stop you from popping the hood and disabling the battery thus killing the alarm, it still isnt going to let you take my car.
And I should hope that if someone sees me pulling the terminals on my battery to shut off my car alarm they have the decency to inform the police, I would much rather show some ID and verify its my car than have some stranger make off with its contents because someone didnt feel like asking in that HIGHLY suspect situation.
I couldnt get the article to come up for some reason, but from this thread I've gathered that the city requires the use of cameras and security guards at cyber-cafe's, can anyone tell me if they specifically require video footage of whats on the computer screens?
If not then why don't these cyber-cafe's just buy those privacy guard monitor covers, looks just like a glare screen, but unless you are directly in front of the monitor theres no way you can see anything.
It might not be following the spirit of the law, but in this case, the spirit of the law is stepping a bit too far by REQUIRING that they monitor these places.
Anyway, like I said I can't get the page to come up so this might not be allowed.
Yes yes, flamebait, because his joke wasnt funny and made little sense. I forgot, every SCO joke is en-vogue right now....my bad, plus its an anti-MS (sorta) joke so theres no way in hell anyone would realize it sucks....silly me.
Someones comment above made me think about how you could possibly lessen the effects of attacks like these. They mentioned that one of the US providers lines cut access to the IP in question. Indeed its no longer pingable.
But how long does it take for word to reach them about that?
What I was thinkingwas, a sort of P2P network client that could actively collect IP's from sites like this and, while not outright blocking them (so the next legit user of that IP isnt screwed) could at least sit in a ZoneAlarm-like position on your system and monitor the IP addresses you try to connect to, if it matches the outgoing IP to one on the list, it throws up an error like "Warning! This IP may contain fraudulent information or be dangerous to your computer, only proceed if you are absolutely certain this site is safe!".
The P2P aspect would be nice because once new scams are caught in the wild (honeypots might be a very usefull tool to help catch them fast) users/admins could update the list (though some sort of peer review would almost certainly have to be in place to avoid abuse) and could redistribute itself amongst the network.
Idealy this should not have to be the case, but as in the above example, its not really a "bug" per-se because if you look at it, its quite obvious what they are doing, just the same there should be some way of preventing this kind of thing reaching the uneducated masses. Even 0.001% of the pop. falling for this kind of thing is unacceptable, and will only fuel people like this.
Anyway, commence poking my idea full of holes:) I'm sure there is plenty, its just an idea.:)
I wish I could say my experiences matched your own, but in my case, I miss my ReplayTV dearly.
I had a 4050 (that was the second one I owned) and I left that with my old roomate when Imoved, my new roommate has a DirecTivo and I ABHORE the thing. There is a HUGE increase in clipped shows. And I KNOW it is TiVo's fault because I've sat and watched as the shows come on right on time, and TiVo misses the beggining or starts early and ends late. Soooo annoying to miss the last 5 minutes of a bunch of your favorite shows, kinda ruins the point of recording it if you have to catch replays and watch them live to be sure stupid TiVo doesnt mess it up.
Anyway, I LOVED commercial advance, and never had an OUNCE of trouble with the broadband connection on the 4050 I had. Matter of fact, I never had a bit of problem with it period.
I do think this situation is a bit screwed and if theres stickers on the box saying "free for 3 yrs" they should be forced to live up to that.
That the people who determine the future of Linux, generally don't listen to people like this....
By that I mean that, for the most part, Linux users are more liable to decide to run Linux because it suit them and their needs, than they are to listen to some MBA dolt who tells them they shouldnt. And since, lets face it, the Linux community is more concerned with making a good OS than it is with taking the #1 spot, I dont see how this even registers on the scales.
And to be honest, I do rather agree with him. I CANNOT set up my less knowledgeable family with Linux without answer 20x more "I have a problem" phone calls than with Windows. This is a problem for me running it on my desktop, but for my mother, it is a VERY real problem. And that is who he's talking about. Your mother, my mother, your grandmother....and even the simplest distro is still a bit much for them.
"The best way to stop the pop-ups requires the user to readjust some internal Windows settings. As you might imagine, many users are reticent to do that."
Omg....you change a service from Automatic to Manual....thats really deep....I mean seriously there are a good few simple walkthroughs on the net showing exactly how to change it. And if you can't follow simple instructions....I dont know how you operate a PC.
Well, this should be an interesting bit of commenting from the/. crowd, good for a laugh I suppose, but still, it would be nice to actually see some REASONABLE evidence that MS had ANYTHING to do with this. I know, I know, too much to ask.
No thats BS, first off, this isnt a world war with people dying and the enslavement of countries at risk. THIS IS A SOFTWARE COMPANY. And this article is nothing but ASKING people to bash MS. They stopped just short of sayin "Theres absolutely no proof that MS had anything to do with it, but lets all act like there is anyway"....oh wait, the didnt stop short of saying that did they....hmmm....if I want war coverage I'll kick on CNN, if I want TECH NEWS, I go here....
Seriously....if the news around he got any mroe biased it would probably suffocate itself. POST TECH STORIES AND DROP THIS WAR OF ATTRITION WITH MS! Good lord! Yes yes, we know, MS=evil! GET OVER IT....good lord.
You are incorrect about that actually, if it DOES take down the whole OS then when you restart you get a little box that says "Windows has recovered from a blah blah blah" and the option to send the dump along with a report to MS detailing the problem.
Btw, I LOVE the spin on this "MS code at fault for half of windows crashes"....way to be just as childish and FUD oriented as the other side.
Because UT04's voice chat, while a valiant effort, sucks major rectum!

Whens the last time IE or Outlook had an update?
If it was a 2002 Camaro then it was an LS1 not an LT1.
Among others I am going to make very certain my next CPU is an AMD (plus I want a 64-bit CPU so I dont have much choice).
In the end the only way to prove that this guys attitude is wrong is to stop buying from him....
Or was last years Evil Bit alot funnier than the 50 million crappy unfunny posts? I REALLY wish they wouldnt have tried to supplement quantity with quality this year.
Haha, I don't know why, but that strikes me as very humorous....

Oh yeah, thats definitely the answer....holy hell some of these posts make no sense!
Oh totally, that nipple is so plainly cut and pasted on there....
