  3. Rotational Kinematics on The Most Beautiful Experiments in Physics · · Score: 0

How about the recent experiment that determined the maximum RPMs a compact disc can handle? That involved angular momentum and velocity, and centripital forces.

Sure, it may not be 'classical physics' but it does involve our everyday lives (at least in some way). IMHO, isn't the best experiments the ones everyone can understand and benefit from? Sure there's many experiments done on Universal Gravity, but determining a mass of a moon orbiting Jupiter isn't as useful as the mechanics aspects of physics.

I know it's only windows drivers, but I'd say this package is much better than other systems out there with Windows pre-installed. Every time I have to reinstall windows on a ComCrap computer, I have to hunt down drivers on compaq's site, as well as driverguide.com. I wish every store-bought computer came with a CD containing drivers on it.

  8. Re:Already wary of this... on Employees Are The Biggest Security Threat · · Score: 1

If the company was really worried about employees plugging in devices, why dont they eliminate the possiblility of connecting one an mp3 player or digital camera? Just go to every workstation, open the computer and unplug the serial ports and add-on USB ports from the mobo. Boot up into the BIOS and disable the ONboard USB plugs, then password protect the BIOS so the user cannot go in and change settings. Finally, close the case and physically lock it so no one can clear the BIOS by shorting a jumper inside. It seems reasonable. For typical office work there really isn't a need for USB or serial ports on the computer. Maybe unless it's a graphics design workstation, then you may need ports for scanners and cameras, but I don't think the secretary or programmer needs USB.

1B Installation of Linux is a federal felony.

  18. Re:FIY (fix it yourself) is also in decline on R.I.P for D.I.Y Or Long Live Open Source? · · Score: 1

It's really about cost. It used to be people would crack open a malfunctioning device, study it for minutes and fix it. I do it sometimes for my smaller devices that are relatively safe to work with. (Like, i wouldn't mess with a PC Power Supply). But when it comes to big ticket electronics like TVs, Refrigerators, and such, the cost to repair it is usually more than 1/2 the cost of a new one. You go ahead and buy a new one with new features and save time. You also have to consider the possibility of shelling out another couple of hundred $$ to fix a new problem that may arise in the near future. So in that respect, yes fix it yourself is going down. But I think electronic hobbying has evolved from soldering capacitors on circut boards (which i think is cool and want to learn those things) to programming and PC building.

I agree. I use RedHat and I'm accustomed to it. I tried Mandrake 8.1 once, and I couldn't find the config programs in the console. I had to spend time going through the GUI, (like Windows). Yes, I'm sure mandrake has text-based configs, but I'm used to RedHat. From the GUI control panel, some of the controls were missing some options (in my opinion.) For example, I wanted to add custom ports to block under Mandrake's firewall, and the only firewall options i had were "low", "med", and "hi". In my opinion, i think some things shouldn't be in a GUI, like XConfigurator. If my GUI doesn't load, I'd like to be able to fix it in the console.
