  1. Re:Err... Okay.... on Automating Future Aircraft Carriers · · Score: 1

Well first of all, this is the French - not US.

Second, it costs money to feed, clothe the sailors. It costs money to house them. To build a carrier that can hold 2000 workers costs money compared to one that holds 800 people. A carrier is a floating city. They have shops, gyms, housing, food areas, and so on. All that costs money.

Why can't they let those of who want broadband get it and pay for it? My grandparents don't want broadband and certainly don't want to pay for it via taxes. I have a T1 in my house and have no desire to pay for a broadband connection I'll never use via my taxes. The internet is a great tool, but its not required to live.

The government should stick to being a government of the people - not of providing services for every conceivable desire.

Well the first issue is you bought a Dell Axim. Those things have great specs, but the implementation of WM5 is awful, slow, and buggy. Second, there is a huge group of developers giving free software, code, and so on. Look at 4winmobile.com, http://www.pocketpcdn.com/ CodeGuru has a section, and there are many many others. Most people share code on the newsgroups too.

Look, I know that WinMobile isn't perfect, but most of what you are writing is out of ignorance and not fact.

I've visited MS and saw some friends who work there. Its a nice place, but definitely not anyplace I would want to work. Cramped hallways. Tiny tiny offices. Outside it was beautiful. Inside...except for the labs, I was getting claustrophobic in just 2 hours.

I've also visited Apple campuses. Far more "fun". Far more relaxing and beautiful. I know they don't pay as well as MS, but gosh darn - you gotta be there over 8 hours a day.

Try Kerio's mail server if you must host your own. Or 4SmartPhone.net for hosted Exchange. I personally use CGPro as well because we need a solid mail backbone that is easy to administer, but otherwise we'd probably go with Kerio or 4SmartPhone.net. Both support Entourage in groupware mode as well as Outlook.

I've got 5 PDAs here (I develop for them). But the iPod SOUNDS better, doesn't require an app taking up a bunch of RAM to constantly run, syncs with iTunes seamlessly and quickly, is far easier to use for playing music, doesn't require super expensive memory cards to hold any good amount of music, is far more durable for its purpose, and comes with thousands of accessories I can use it with including playing and controlling directly from my car.

You do realize the Newton's handwriting recognition was not built by Apple but by a company that later released that SAME exact code for the Pocket PC which was then licensed as "Transcriber" and also as a commercial app called "Calligrapher" from Phatware.com?

And since then its been refined and improved dramatically. But its the same engine deep down inside. So if you're using a Pocket PC today and using Calligrapher, you are getting the same engine as the Newton for HWR, but better.

Granted the UI on the Newton is still the best.
