Free software is not just a hobby. Redhat is not in business just for kicks. It's delusional to think that money isn't a factor just because their product is free.
Open source projects are no more viable than their commercial counterparts. As with any hobby, people get bored with things, or don't take them as seriously as a business would. Hobbyists can't or won't devote the kind of resources to projects that businesses do, and an awful lot of projects get abandoned.
"Yes... but until landlords... (and everybody else) adopt similar free product and services initiatives..."
Until? Do you seriously think this will ever happen? I don't think the rest of the world is going to change for free software, I think free software needs to change for the world. If that means that it can't be free anymore, so be it. If something isn't viable, it isn't viable.
All of the fryer oil is spoken for. There's a big market for used grease. Almost every restaurant has a contract with a grease buyer. The buyer removes it from the restaurant (sometimes for a fee, even) and sells it off to chemical blending companies.
It gets turned into conveyor lubricant for wet conveyors (soda bottlers, breweries, etc) and tire mounting lubricant. I'm sure there are a thousand other things it gets turned into as well.
Yes, that would be fantastic. All the legitimacy linux has worked so hard to get, gone in a flash!
Seriously, if you're going to win anyone over to linux, it won't be by shouting "you suxor!" at the competition. Linux can win by being a better product, not by slinging FUD back at Microsoft.
Fuck software, we want handhelds powered by ideals!
Sorry to make fun, but you're clearly an idiot. You are the reason I can't convince my boss to run linux on our local webserver. You just spout off completely unfounded "facts" about linux, but where's the hard data that says linux is "10 times faster"?
This is the year 2002, and it's high time we started evaluating our software based on it's merits as software, not it's idealistic value.
Linux should be on my toaster oven. I don't want to have to recompile my kernel when I want to toast bagel, so I'm looking for a toaster distro that comes with at least toast 2.2, because I want dynamically loadable toaster modules.
Please Do Not Feed the Trolls. Odds are you're going to get a resonse that purports RMS to be the goatse.cx guy or something. I can neither prove nor disprove these claims, so you'll have to draw your own conclusions.
I was going to come up with an analogy about a guy walking into a party with an airhorn, screaming his ass off so that nobody else could talk, but then I realized that would never happen because people generally behave themselves when not hiding behind the internet.
I put my money on a social (rather than physical) defect. Some people can't manage to string together enough synapses to post something intelligent, yet they are still compelled to post. Some people need attention.
I know this is offtopic, as is the parent, but sometimes I just gotta rant:)
Sure you can limit it, but losing ~ is still a bitch. If anything, I'd rather lose everything but ~ because that's where my files are changing all the time. Everything else is fairly static, so rolling back to yesterday's backup isn't so bad.
I wish I could be as optimistic. Unfortunately, I don't think 90% of windows users realize there's a way to stop pop-ups, and those that do are going to use one of the many small shareware titles (~1M) rather than download a fairly large (10M+) browser.
I don't know about DJ Shadow, but if it's good enough for Richie Hawtin, it's good enough for me.

Oh, and it smells fucking awful.
but i still love you

This article isn't about MYSQL, it's about a book about MySQL.
Stored procedures are terribly simple to implement in whatever's driving your database, so there's really no point in bloating MySQL with them.
If you're going to point out the lack of transaction support, have a look at this.
If you're just going for early post E-Z Karma, well done.
The moderation system fucking sucks.
The fucking moron who gave this +1 Informative...what the fuck? If you're not going to follow the goddamned link, don't fucking moderate it.
Oh, and doesn't OS X kind of eliminate the need for ppc linux? Am I missing something?
you know what i'm talking about, sister.
Yes! Fanatacism!

...and in other news, you're a tard. Did the headline say "sloppy code == bad"?
This is an article about the impact of bad code, not bad code itself.
I'm just curious why you said "anorexic girls". I realize that females account for the majority of anorexics, but certainly not all.
I know because I am an anorexic boy.

root@toaster# toast --config ~/.toastrc --bread "whole wheat"
Linux should be on everything.
"Imagine people being able to compare."
We've been able to dual boot our PCs for years.
"Imagine them having a comparison running in the palm of their hand."
Size doesn't matter. The people who weren't interested in Linux on the desktop probably aren't interested in Linux on the Palm.
"How long do you think people would put up with M$."
As long as M$ owns them. I don't think that the reason Microsoft hasn't crumbled is that people didn't have dual boot handhelds.

The original zdnet article was a terribly well executed troll, don't you think? I mean, just look at all the knee-jerk responses here.
In short, RMS is one of the most prominent figures in the open source community. He founded the and now insists that everything that even sat next to GNU software in the refrigerator must now be called GNU/whatever it used to be called. The fact that this only complicates matters needlessly has been addressed, and I think he's decided to quit it.
If you need to know more than that, see this for a fairly good idea who RMS is.
RMS's homepage is at http://www.stallman.org/
Please Do Not Feed the Trolls. Odds are you're going to get a resonse that purports RMS to be the goatse.cx guy or something. I can neither prove nor disprove these claims, so you'll have to draw your own conclusions.

"Once the RIAA shut down the filesharing service, Napster, Inc. had no means of turning a profit that I could see."
How were they making money before they got shut down? I'm astonished they lasted as long as they did, too.
Well, what you need to do is contact slashdot and ask them to create a new topic. "Kernel Updates" or something. Then you could block the stories.
Bitching about it here really isn't going to get you anywhere.
No, you dumbass.

Off to a great start...
YOU might not look in the code, but OTHERS do.
Man, that's a fantastic security plan.

I can only pick one? No ignorant troll option? Well, then, I'll take ignorant. I hear it's nice.

If you read the source. I don't know about you, but I don't have time to go through everything I build with a fine tooth comb looking for nasties.
Grabbing source and make installing it is about the same as grabbing a binary, as far as security goes. You just don't know what's in there.
