  1. Since it's all that is for sale right now...
I wonder how much smaller it would be if you dump any backward compat with 32bit and lower (in other words, runs only on 64bit) dumped all the spyware/telemetery and associated programs needing that, ditched "apps" and the associated store, dropped down to one rendering engine (see previous article on Edge going bye bye) how much smaller and/or faster, you'd be able to make it?

Long time ago there was a thing called 98Lite, which was basically a stripped down version of windows 98 that ran pretty darned well on even very modest hardware.

I'd like to see something like that again...

I was. I loved NT4 (SP6-era) and ran it as a daily box for years. Even got USB working (thanks to some Dell supplied drivers that could be fooled about what OS they were for) for keyboard, mouse and printer.
DirectX up to 6 (IIRC, might have been 5) so games worked as well.

But time marches on and I went to 7, and now to Linux.

  7. The question is.... ...would you use it?
The idea is intriguing, sort of the best of both worlds, but given MS's track record since WinXP....I"m sure it'd be a pile of garbage.

I virtualized my entire Win7 box with VMWare vCenter Converter

This included LightRoom and Photoshop (granted, CS3) and I was *stunned* at how well it run as a VM, even on my older Ubuntu PowerEdge 2900 box.

It works, and it works well. Through in a modern system with GPU Passthrough and it'll work even better.

  15. Windows XP (dumb dog aside) was the last search engine that "just worked"
It got so bad in 7 (and of course 8 and 10) that I went in search of, heh, a better search engine to replace the half-baked, fully broken one that came default with windows.

May I introduce you to "UltraSearch?"

My favourite Win7 search horror story is it *constantly* unable to find "scanpst" despite Outlook being installed, and even pointing the damn search to the program directory where Office is installed.

Pathetic. UltraSearch is the winner here.
