Which means not automatically giving the command line answer to obvious newbies when a perfectly good GUI tool solution exists for their disto.
Automatically, no. However, avoiding the command-line in favor of a GUI tool is not always an advisable, or even possible, alternative. An anecdotal example involves my recent conversion of my sister (rather tech-illiterate, and definitely not interested in learning the 'why' behind the 'how') to Kubuntu. One of the things I was pleasantly (and admittedly, unexpectedly) surprised at was how much simpler tech support was under linux. Whereas in Windows, it was always a lengthy process describing a series of mouseclicks and movements, under linux it simply involved "open konsole, copy+paste this". This, combined with the lack of bizarro spyware/adware/windows spazzing out events, has made things much easier.
So if you complain about it, they'll tell you how to get around it? Why bother hindering at all?
While probably not the only reason, it does seem akin to products coming with rebates rather than just costing less. More people buy the product since it's actually price - rebate but never end up sending in the rebate. In the same way, most people *probably* won't bother to write an email to ask to copy the cd more. Unlike rebates, however, they probably will just end up pirating outright.

Perhaps because I saw the GBA article above this one on the main page, I remembered a page I had seen a while back about overclocking your TI(change in capacitor). Thought it was pretty cool, I'd try it but my calculator is school-owned. Somehow I don't think they'd find it as cool as I would. =)
Not to mention the fact that there is only feasible choice. Here where I live it's cable or 56k. They can do quite a bit, and still keep users just because there is nowhere else to go.
Satellite maybe, but only if you don't care about high latency.
I can only imagine, "Son, if you don't go set the table right now I'm going to warn you!"::finger hovering over warn button::
I use instant messenging sometimes, but often I find it easier and more beneficial to just walk down the hall to talk in person. This is particularly true when trying to see how family members messed up their computers. It's far easier to go in and check myself if the CAT5 came out of the wall than to try to describe it over IM.

Above post just reminded me of this, thought I'd share. Apologies ahead of time for slight Off-Topicness.
The study shows that the most likely abductors of children... are the parents themselves! [the two adults are somewhat stunned] The study reveals that nine out of every ten abduction cases are commited by the child's mother or father. The bottom line being that your children aren't safe, even from you! [Tweek's mom rises from the couch and walks away from it. Richard watches her go]
but it amazes me that people will insist on using a complex tool (such as a computer) and not be willing to learn the basics about it, or even how to properly maintain it. You don't do that with your car, so why do that with your computer?
Interesting point, but hopefully any program made to check grammar and spelling would be intelligent enough to check for bad writing techniques such as many simple sentences closely following each other. While this may not be the case, it would not be all that difficult to incorporate basic algorithms to check for poor writing styles.
Obviously no computer should replace the human, otherwise all student essays would loose any creativity, prose, transitioning, etc. and would simply be created to meet the form.
Much like standardized testing like the AP tests encourages writing to be factual rather than well-written, so this encourages grammar and spelling over content.
The fact that a program has to be written to check papers for teachers is perhaps the saddest fact of all. I for one know that I have had English teachers correct my papers - incorrectly.
It seems to me that Honda should, at the very least, have some way for the driver to disable this feature. Particularly since it is not available on its own, but only in a package.
From article: The system comes as part of a package of options and is not priced separately.
Everyone keeps recommending Bawls, Jolt, UberCoffee, and the usual assortment of junk food.
And all of that belongs at a LANparty, absolutely. What would a LAN be without caffeine and greasy food to blame your bad performance on? (ie: "The only reason you fragged me was because my hand was so greasy it slipped right off my mouse!::mutter::lucky bastard::/mutter::") Makes you feel better to.
But never will I go to a LANparty without a gallon jug of water for myself. Spacing caffeine and junkfood with water is good, keeps you from eating too much crap and prevents acid burn from eating pure junk for >24 hours.
Another Interesting Keyless Keyboard.
Thought this one was equally interesting, something fellow slashdotters might be interested in if they hadn't seen it.
I'd rather play with the possibilities of cheaters then be forced to run something that 'checks my hard drive' or 'takes screenshots' of my game and ftps them back.
An interesting point and something I myself have been worried about for quite some time. More frightening to me than a cheating person (usually a lamer using someone else's scripts with poor or little understanding of how they actually work), is the eventuality of an admin who decides to use a server maliciously. It seems to me that with the power server admins have over the clients in some games, it would be feasible to use a server to distribute a virus, etc.
Imagine how many unique gamers go to a well-populated game server everyday...
Funny because it really can be rather true. While there are the really creative hackers who can (in some ways) be equated to Renaissance painters, the vast majority of programmers probably fall under the more generic definition of a painter.
While some (Renaissance) create original methods (such as methods of sorting) within programming, most (painters) simply create programs which use these patterns (buckets of paint) to serve their purpose. While they may use them creatively, it will never become more than a nicely painted wall - a decent picture at best - and not something truly original, artistic, or unique.

I must be playing too much World of Warcraft, because I immediately thought Windows For The Loss.

I wish that were true, but some people just haven't figured out it's a bad idea yet.
However, it is correct that cameras garner far more hatred. Also, some more amusing moments.

just a hastily drawn up example, idea still stands ;)

Indeed they do, as one unfortunate man found out the hard way.

-Southpark Episode 611
You obviously haven't driven in New Jersey.
First thing I thought when I read this, "Interesting to be going back to those...for security?"
A feature I actually found somewhat irritating at first but have grown to love. Half of everything i type now is enter.

Seriously though, since all of it wasn't taxed enough already? Wonder how they would tax a large, short-term lan.

Might want to pay the National Motorists Association a visit.

Just my .02$, and apologies for slight rambling.
Scientific? No. But interesting how different the responses are when the material is presented differently.
Of course gaming affects the user, so does everything else in life. To insist there there is no effect caused by gaming is downright asinine.
Effect doesn't have to be negative either, as one study shows.

..or simply get up earlier - taking traffic into account - and realize that it is clearly taking you longer to get to work than you are allowing for.

72/24 = 3 days.
You claim you realized by looking at the clock, but the time of day would have been exactly the same. I know I've missed entire days that way before ;)
