It was surprising to see that they appear to be a tiny oasis in the middle of a liberal swampland.

For me, the main concern with their choice of New Hampshire is not with how things are today, but some years down the road if (when?) the state is overrun with refugees from Massachusetts that bring their city disease with them ("Massholes"). I read that they get about twenty thousand immigrants every year to their 1.2 million current population. If this increases, will the hypothetical twenty thousand freedom lovers be able to counter the influence of a flood of Massholes?

I am not just speculating here, I have already witnessed this exact same scenario play out between California and Nevada. It sure is a sad day when a lover of freedom starts wondering if democracy is a good idea or not. :-(

Yep :-) I don't mean to badmouth these hybrid cars with better milage, but I don't think they have the right to make such a big deal out of a relatively modest achievement, especially considering the higher price. I think Saturn made a stupid decision about dropping the SL/SL1/SL2 models and replacing them with the higher priced, less efficient ION.

31.5 isn't better than what one of the guys at work gets in his escort.

For what it's worth, I have two Saturn SL cars, and they both average between 42 and 44 miles per gallon. One is a 1997 model, the other 2002. Aside from three or four times when someone else filled up the tank and forgot, I can account for every single gallon of fuel and every mile over the last seven (and two) years. Oh, and I bought both of them brand new from the dealer for $12K and $10K.

These cars are not hot rods, but they have plenty of power to climb hills at 65mph and I am almost always a bit quicker than the other cars.

So using my own experience as a benchmark, I can see that these 50mph+ cars may have a claim for better efficiency, but they are also a lot more expensive than mine.

It's funny that you should pick the 6502 for your example. If I remember correctly, all memory references in the 6502 have to use pointers in "zero page", as either [ptr+x] or [ptr]+y addressing. With a little hardware support, it might be straightforward to implement a useful VM by latching the zero page reference as an index into some context specific translation lookaside table. :-)
