Just don't publish programs in magazines. That really was a painful and stupid way to distrubute software.
When I was a kid, before going to kindergarten. I saw my dad copying code from an old Compute! magazine. I asked him what he was doing and he explained he was telling the computer what he wanted it to do. I asked how I could do this and Dad told me I would need to learn to read first. I learned how to read before going to school for the sole purpose of writing code. I now have an associates in programming and have been working with computers for about 6-7 years. I have the C64 and Compute! to thank for making me the geek I am today. This news brings warmth to my heart.
I was not stereotyping, I was pointing out the futility of trying to install a service pack with floppies. Which was the scenario introduced by the parent of my reply
Often poor countries have Internet as a luxury because to have internet at home/work means 90% of the income per month.
I knew that, that was the reason I listed bandwidth as a possible reason. I am also unsure if Micro$oft will mail overseas. I am not looking at the hardware issue simply because if they are running XP, they should be able to run SP2. I do have a great deal of pity for the soul who gets all the patches to install SP2 using Floppy disks. If I am correct sp2 alone was 300 MB, meaning around 215 floppies to install. Which would definately be cost prohibitive, even in the US.
Very good point, AC, my intention of that sentence was indicating that any change in a bureaucracy as large as the US gov't would not happen overnight. It will take a while to get the wrong-headed out of office and a while longer to reverse the abuses the past regimes have passed. Did you know that no one that passed the PATRIOT act admits to even reading the darn thing prior to the vote? Apathy has no place where people's rights are involved.
Correct me if I am wrong. The MPAA has a self imposed regulation system that seems to work pretty well. A board of parents rate the film using easy to identify letters. I don't think there are any penalties for allowing underage kids access to restricted material. I have not heard of youths being exposed to "Inappropriate" material at the theatre/sales oriface recently. The ESRB also is a system based on easy to identify letters. I hear of "inappropriate" material sold to youths fairly often here.
I do not think Wal-Mart would sell GTA: Vice-City to a 14 year old but would not sell "R" rated films. This leads me to blame parents for not making their children's welfare a priority and blaming video games. I also think the media is responsible for blowing one aspect of a much larger picture out of proportion. I have seen "R" rated films that would glorify the murder society much like scapegoats like the GTA series. As a parent of two, I keep an eye on what the little ones watch, and have no problem being unpopular when I change the channel.
I am wondering if he is referring to the upgrades of licensed copies. If not countries such as China and others with almost institutionalized software piracy might cause this lack of upgrades. If it is for licensed versions, I could assume a lack of bandwidth being somewhat limiting. I personally have had no issues with XP SP2 either time I installed it, but the second time was much more pleasant because I had my cable internet connection.
Patriot act big PDF warning. I am happy that our government is actually trying to restore our rights. First they let the assault weapon ban drop, now they let the patriot act die. I know it is early, but this may be a step in the right direction. Hopefully we can continue to elect out the lawmakers who would lie and steal their voter's rights. IMHO moving away from the 2 party system would be another step in the right direction, but I will take what I can get.
Things like that are why I like cable services like Video on Demand. I can order from a good selection of programs and don't have to wade through the crap. Then again I work for the local cable provider, and may be a bit biased.
I like the Axe commercial with the hot girl bathing someone "ooh, you're a dirty boy, how old are you?" "22" "Ooh, yes you are"
I laughed so hard the first time I saw that. I don't think I would commercial skip because I am afraid I will miss some of the better forms of comedy on television (reference the CITI identity theft service commercial series). Then again, I could skip the personal injury lawyer commercials and their darn jingles.
When I go to get a Coke, it is usually referenced by going for a soda.
Here, in Alabama (and other places in the southern US) Coke replaces the word soda/pop/cola, regardless of manufacturer (Pepsi products are called Cokes). It is kinda irritating to say, "Can you bring me a Coke?" with the response along the lines of "Sure hun, what kind?". On the other hand, it is quite impressive of Coca-Cola to have such an obscene integration of the language.
I was a player of SWG for the first year and a half after the introduction of SWG. I played for about 16 months, hoping Sony would get their stuff together and build the game I dreamed of. I watched the Empire get killed by the superior numbers of rebel scum crying for a nerf (albeit the old AT-ST was overpowered, it kept rebel scum down). I watched the promising new dungeons come out, and thought it was a good start. I explored the dangerous planets on foot in hope of adventure. I even ground holocrons in hope of being one of the few to unlock Jedi. I saw the game degenerate to Jedi on each corner. I even downloaded the beta of JTL over dialup to see if anything would keep me.
I left despite RL friends asking me to come back. Sony killed this franchise while George Lucas raped my childhood dreams. Please take the dog behind the barn and pull the trigger.
Sony had a loyal fanbase in the forums with good ideas and implementations. Many professions remained useless despite many promises by the devs "We're working on it guys, what do you want?" then ignoring the myriad of responses. If you want to gain more gamers, listen to gamers to find out what is important.
I had an idea that if you made a current day or even slightly futuristic FPS, you could pay for server/bandwidth with advertising as opposed to a monthly fee. I see an urban combat game where soda cans, billboards, stores/restaurants, even vehicles could have a sponsor. If it was done properly, the advertising would make the game more realistic and involved.
This scheme would help lure the casual gamers, since no one has to worry about "getting my money's worth".
As a side note, if this idea gets stolen, I wrote it here first:-)
I live in Birmingham, Alabama. Thompson has been on the local talk radio station at least twice in the last year or so. I will say this, he is a good orator when he is on his monologue and pretty good when a caller who agreed with him was waving the "We love Jack" flag. As soon as a differing opinion came across, however, Jack got unhinged, screaming and acting like we killed his puppy.
He had one guy who said he liked to play Halo. As soon as he mentioned Halo, Jack ranted about the game being a killing simulator used to train mass murderers (kind of fuzzy on exact wording). After that tirade he asked the caller if he liked the GTA series, the caller said he wasn't impressed with the game, but he had played it. Thompson went into a rant about the evils of society and had the hosts drop the call. The caller was given no chance to present his views. I can't stand a coward who resorts to yelling when presented with a conflicting view.
I am thankful that we had a level head like Judge Moore over that case. He is campaigning for governor now. I think it will be an interesting year.
Wasn't called "Scrum" back then. Was called "Crunch Time".
When I was learning to play rugby with my university club I played in the prop position, which is on the front line that slams into the opposing team. I called scrum everything from "Crunch Time" to "Oh Shit". Nice to know sports analogies transfer properly to coding.
Due to disclosures detrimental to the interests National Security, and generally ruining the suprise, the parent of this thread will be flogged. Oh yeah, insert vague refererences to war on terrorism, Bin Laden, Al Queda, and the Easter Bunny as precident and justification for said flogging.

Safe Cigarettes?
·
· Score: 5, Informative
I quit smoking 3 years ago while attending college full time and working full time at an ISP tech desk (phone support). I had smoked for about 9 years prior to that. I think if you really want to quit, you will, my (then) 3 year old girl telling me "Daddy, the cigarettes make you cough." I figured if my 3 year old can see that, I should be able to see that as well.
I set a day and time for me to quit (Friday at 17:00) and chainsmoked up to that point. At 17:00 I placed the remainder of the pack on my counter and left them there. When I had a craving, I smelled the tobacco and placed the pack back on the counter. The aches from the wonderful chemicals leaving my joints were relieved by ibuprofin. And I kept saying to myself, I have gone (insert time) without a cigarette, I will wait a few hours and get one if I need it. The mantra kept repeating, setting goals and pushing them higher and higher.
I threw the pack away three months later with the same contents as it had that Friday. Food and drinks tasted better, my newborn son's asthma went away (I smoked outside, but the smoke comes in on your hair, hands, and clothing), and my wallet was fuller.
I feel so much better now that I would suggest quitting to anyone. People around you will understand if you are a bit of a Hellbeast, and will forgive you if you matter to them. If they don't, screw them they don't care for you anyway.
Say I were in business building widgets. I decide a Wireless Access Point (WAP) would be helpful for my inventory pullers. Let's also say my WAP is wide open(either by choice or by incompetence) and an outside party violates my data. The fact that my clients' data was leaked by my lack of acceptable safety measures is bound to surface at some point. This could poison my reputation with my clients who may take business to XYZ corp who make equal quality widgets but secure their transmissions. The nature of capitalism ensures I take appropriate precautions.
